inground pools: Gunite vs Liner
We're meeting with a couple of pool companies on Friday and we're weighing the pros and cons of each type of pool.
For those with gunite, do your feet get cut up or raw when you use the pool a lot? My kids are pushing for vinyl because they say their feet get "cut up" when they are in gunite pools. I know this happened to me when I was a kid, but it was usually in commercial settings (hotels, school, etc.), not private homes.
Did your taxes increase with an inground pool? My DH claims our taxes are going to go up a bit, but a friend told me it doesn't increase that much (maybe 1k or so, whereas my DH thinks it will be more like 3-4k.) *obviously we plan on asking the pool companies about this as well.*

We had a high water table so gunite is not good for that. Some of the other cons that we factored in were:
Expect to pay about double for a gunite pool.
Maintenance, every couple years pool will need to be marble dusted.
Also consider whether your property value can absorb the cost of a gunite pool. For example in a 1mil+ many buyer expect them, but properties below that price point guinite may not be a good return on investment for resale.
Edt to add: I think our taxes went up about $2k for a 20x46 pool.

We did gunite in our pool 2 yrs ago and are building another in our new house now, again gunite. I'm in FL, I don't think our pool company use liners anyway, it's strictly concrete pools/ sprayed gunite. It's steel reinforced, and you can choose a "smoother" finish but it will be more expensive. We are doing salt this time, and this will be gentler on the porous concrete, so it will certainly last 15+ years. Chlorine eats the finish away, slowly. But gunite is fine, and no we never scraped our feet. Like the PP said, its better for resale value. Our taxes went up very minimally.

We have really high water tables in our area, but a lot of homes seem to still have gunite pools anyway. 
My DH and I prefer the aesthetics of a gunite pool and think it would be more in line with our home, but we don't expect to get any "ROI" should we decide to sell. But I do think they are a selling point in our neighborhood. Most of the homes have inground pools, along with tennis courts and/or 1/2 court basketball courts.
How do you feel about the size of your pool? My neighbor has a 25x40 and she thinks it's too big. I think it's the perfect size, especially if you have a lot of kids in it. (I'd like to go bigger, but I have to be practical at some point.  )
The biggest thing I'm interested in is a built in automatic cover, so I'm pretty set on a traditional rectangular pool, possibly with a spa built into it so the automatic cover can cover that as well, but I haven't seen any vinyl pools like that. They all seem to be built separately from the pool.

We're doing salt for sure.
I've fallen in love with some of the Pebble Tec finishes. My DH is cringing because he just hears "Cha-ching, Cha-ching!"

We had a 20x40 growing up and it was a good size. Plenty of room to play etc and my mom like the size for laps.

I've mentioned this to my DH in past discussions as a pro for gunite. We had 2 labs in the past and we intend to get dogs again in the near future (most likely labs, although he promised me a Newfy 10 years ago! ), so I keep pointing out the fact that he knows he's going to want the dogs in the pool.

This isn't necessarily true. We live on the water, literally, beachfront north shore. Our water table could not be higher and we have a gunite pool. We just had our pool marble dusted. The finish will last 10 years so it's not every couple of years. Because we live on the water they had to make holes on the bottom of the pool while it was being worked on to relieve the pressure during high tide but other than that it is fine. Our finish is completely smooth.

We had gotten some quotes for IGP. I also wanted a automatic cover but I was discouraged by one pool company owner, as he told me they frequently malfunction due to debris getting in the track etc. They are extremely expensive and expensive to then repair. So we decided against it.

Really? Both companies that we met with (True Blue and Haven) seemed very much in favor of auto covers during the swimming season. We're definitely doing the auto cover...it's become a non issue for us. At the moment, we're just torn between vinyl and gunite. We're trying to figure out if the price difference will be worth it.

Yes definitely possible, many of my neighbors have gunite.
