Inguinal hernia???

Hi Everyone,
I've posted on other boards and am a mother myself of a very active 2 year old boy. Recently I noticed my son's right testicle was swollen but without pain. We took him to the ER where they ruled out torsion and told us he had a hydrocele. We then went to the urologist who explained that it was an inguinal hernia and that it required surgery he also said that it was a common enough thing that children are born with but that it definitely needed repair. I was wondering if any of you knew anything about the procedure/surgery or had any stories of success or precaution. My son has never been under anesthesia before either so I'm worried about that as well. Any experience you've had or known someone who has would help. thanks

Re: Inguinal hernia???

I can only tell you about my DH - he had a double inguinal hernia operation & did well. Recovery was about 2 weeks or so of staying off his feet for the most part. The only thing that was a little scary was his testicles (TMI) - they swelled up about 5x their normal size! Very uncomfortable but they returned to normal!Chat Icon

Re: Inguinal hernia???

This is EXACTLY what my son has. We brought him to Schnider's Children's Hospital and he's having the surgery in March. I'm a bit nervous about him going under too. The doctor said that kids recover very quickly from this surgery and that he should be up and running the next day (not that I would let him..lol.).

They are going to make a small incision in the lower right abdomen and close up the hole that is causing the fluid to go into the testicle. This happened from even before he was born...it's just something that could happen while he's developing. They said it's very common as well.

I don't have much advice for you, but I was born with an inguinal hernia. I had surgery when I was 10 days old. My mom said it was much more difficult on her than it was on me.

Good luck!!!

My brother had a it when he was around 5. I just spoke to my mom - she said the surgery was very quick, and that he didn't have any pain after.

Good Luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon
