Inguinal Hernia Surgery- dr cohen
Just found out DS has an Inguinal Hernia. The Dr at pm pediatrics said he would likely need surgery and probably sooner than later because it has descended down into his scrotum
Anyone go through this? Can you recommend your surgeon (im in nassau)
How involved is the surgery? Are they in and out the same day or do they require a hospital stay? How is the recovery?
Feel so bad for my little man
Eta: ok we have a surgical consult with Dr Cohen tom...anyone use him????
Thanks! I know this is common but I'm nervous

Re: Inguinal Hernia Surgery
Oh no!!!! I am SO sorry he has to go through this!!
Obviously, you're going to bring him to his regular doctor to get a "second" opinion, right?
What were his symptoms?
For you and your DS:

Thanks! Yes we will follow up tom with his ped.
His symptoms were a swollen right testicle. Which can be very serious...thankfully it was not a torsional testicle because with that you have only a 3-6 hour window to correct it and prevent loss of the testicle.
He also had a fever which was unrelated to the hernia...wound up being an ear infection.

Re: Inguinal Hernia Surgery- dr cohen
My preemie son had the same issue. We saw Dr. Dolgin from Cohen's Children's Hospital. The first time we went to consult with him, my son had it on just one side. The Dr. recommended going in and doing both sides because it was common for the other side to need to be done eventually. I agreed because I didn't want to have to go through it twice. Turns out on the day of surgery, before even going in he detected it on the other side too so both sides needed to be repaired. DS had surgery scheduled for July but after pre-op blood work they canceled it because of low blood count (common in preemies). I was told no big deal because he wasn't really showing symptoms. I told the person scheduling I didn't even know what the symptoms were. She said well, is he fussy? And I told her yes. Her response was, well that's probably colic. So we waited almost a month until August, during which time I had a VERY fussy baby. Immediately after the surgery he stopped fussing. This was very upsetting because I now believe that my son spent most of the summer in pain from the hernia. My advice- do it sooner rather than later so your baby doesn't go through what mine did. The rule at Cohen's was that if a baby was less than 50 or 60 weeks (40 gestation plus whatever # of weeks they want past your 40 week pregnancy-but I think it's 50), then they stay overnight. Mine was under their number so he had to stay overnight. Other wise it's outpatient. I don't want to scare you but my son's surgical site got infected internally. The surgery was on a Tuesday. By Saturday he was screaming. I called the office and the on-call surgeon said it was highly unlikely he was screaming from complications from the surgery. By Sunday we headed to Cohen's ER. They couldn't find the infection and told me it was colic. I knew it wasn't colic. By Tuesday he was worse and I called the ped's office. They had me bring the baby in and it was there that they found the infection. We were sent back to Cohen's ER for him to be cut open while I held him down and they drained the infection. We spent the night there on IV antibiotics before going home. I tell you this so that you listen to your mommy instict---you know your child best. I knew he wasn't colicky. Thank god I brought him to the ped two days after being in the ER where there was "nothing" wrong with him. His infection could have burst internally and sent him into sepsis with who knows what consequences. In their defense the only thing they could have and should have done differently that Sunday was giving him an ultrasound. They would have seen the infection on the ultrasound. Many drs and a few surgeons examined and felt the surgical sites and they were not able to feel/see anything. That coupled with the fact that he didn't really have a fever, nothing indicated that there was an infection. But I knew something was very wrong. Good luck. I really liked Dr. Dolgin. He's an older man, very sweet. His phone number is 718-470-3636. His office is at the hospital. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

Re: Inguinal Hernia Surgery- dr coren
thanks for your responses! It turns out it is a hydrocele that was brought on by sickness (he has an ear infection) and it may resolve itself. We go back in 3 months but he may not need surgery. He also said his circumcision was fine (I thought there was too much skin). The dr said when he looses his baby fat it will pull back and be fine.
Dr Coren was nice. Not a huge personality but he took the time to really explain things to us and was great with DS.

Re: Inguinal Hernia Surgery- dr cohen
So funny, I brought my little guy to a ped. urologist today because I thought his circumcision needed to be redone. He said the same thing, pocket of fat that would go away, no surgery! So happy to hear that---for both of us!
