Insurance won't cover prenatals...
Anyone else here just taking OTC prenatals?
I've been taking the GNC prenatals (800mcg of folic acid). Do most prescription prenatals have 800 mcg of folic acid or more? Should I supplement with a folic acid pill (an additional 400mcg)?
What a crock of sh!t- my insurance DOES cover Viagra, though (how nice).

Oh boy don't get me started on insurance coverage -- all my IVF meds were out of pocket - $8K - but yes Viagra is covered for 80-year-old men! It's their dignity at stake you know...
My RE told me to take OTC prenatals and just check the dosage of folic acid. It will be listed.

Re: Insurance won't cover prenatals...
Is it possible to overdo folic acid? What I mean is- I have the OTC prenatals that have 800mcg of folic. I also have leftover folic acid pills that I was using with my old regular GNC vitamins (that had 400mcg of folic).
Maybe all this excess folic acid is making me loopy.....

I take the Trader Joe's OTC pre-natals. I think they just raised them to $12.99 a bottle but I think there are at least 90 in there. It was actually cheaper than the $45 co-pay I had to pay for the prescription ones for the same amount of days.
You should be taking 800 mg of folic acid.

Do you mean 800mcg?
My Rx prenatals only have 1mg in them of folic acid.

They stopped making them!!! I was taking them too, and just found out that they are not selling them anymore! Time to find a new one!

Re: Insurance won't cover prenatals...
My insurance didn't cover mine either, but they were $28.99, so I sucked it up and paid it. My dr wanted me to take ones that have DHA in them (actually its a separate pill).
I also bought a bottle of Target prenatals, I personally think they are fairly similiar.
ETA: Oddly enough, they covered Zofran and I only had a $25 copay on pills that would have cost $889 without insurance for a WEEK

Re: Insurance won't cover prenatals...
Prescription prenatals have 1mg of Folic Acid while the OTC prenatals have 800mcg. There are quite a lot of insurance companies that no longer cover prenatals because they are available OTC (even though they aren't exactly the same). The OTC ones are just fine though and I would not supplement with additional Folic Acid. If you want to supplement with anything I would take a DHA supplement. Enfamil's Expecta Lipil is what I took. Hope that helps.

I used to take the Target brand of prenatals. They had 800mg of folic acid and were pretty cheap too

Re: Insurance won't cover prenatals...
My script ones are covered. I would have to use my flexible spending account to get the OTC ones, and it would end up being more expensive anyway.

Re: Insurance won't cover prenatals...
did you try & call and see if there was a specific brand of pre-natals they covered? Maybe generic, etc?
there are SO many different kinds out there.
when I was first PG my doc had a list of who covered what and prescribed me somethng specific to Oxford.

And my doctor did just that - she said if they work with your stomach, no need to switch. The 800 mg of folic acid is plenty as well.

simply ask your OB/GYN for samples each time you go. That's what I did instead of spending $$ on them.

another thing to add, when i had my first child, i had a job with no ins. and was on medicaid for pregnant women. the prenatals were free...the dr. told me he was giving me a prescript for them b/c they would be free for me, otherwise, store bought would've sufficed.

Me too!
My doctor said that OTC pre natals are fine - he was MUCH MORE adamant about my taking Fish Oil (DHA) - he's practically evangelical about its benefits.

Re: Insurance won't cover prenatals...
My old insurance didn't cover BC or prenatals. I think that's just silly. I went to Eckerd which discouted my prenatals by 50%. for 45 a month.
Now I pay a 35 copay for my prenatals. yippee
