Interesting convo with a friend who never votes

Do you think if NY was split into 3 (Long Island, 5 boroughs, and upstate) and each area had its own electoral votes...would more people go out and vote and would the popular vote change?

Seems a lot of people don’t vote bc the city makes NY blue and all our votes go to the democratic candidate so there is no point.

Personally, I always vote but I also get so discouraged knowing it doesn’t matter bc we will always be blue.

It was an interesting concept not just for NY. But how many people don’t vote bc their state is always red or blue. Makes you wonder if the popular vote is as accurate as we think.

The popular vote is not accurate because such a large number of people typically don’t vote. Almost 1/3 of eligible population.

Old white males are way disproportionally represented in active voting population.

Younger people and POC and women have historically had less turnout.

Electoral college needs to go. It unfairly distorts the vote. The number of electoral votes to actual voters is grossly disproportionate in favor of rural states. It’s a system that helps keep a minority group in power.

The 5 boroughs aren't the sole factor in NY being blue. Cities and their suburbs tend to be blue and cities and their suburbs have the most people.

Nassau, Westchester, Rockland counties are blue. Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse- all blue.

Google NYS election results and you can see what area is red and blue. City and some suburbs upstate hold the blue but it was not a blow out and all votes have not been counted. 55.7 vs 43 and still only 66% counted. They announced Biden won at 2 minutes after the polls closed. Makes no sense as it was not a blow out.

Yes I think that if Long Island was a separate state, there would be more republican voters. With the city and a few upstate areas, it really doesn't matter what Long Island votes as it is almost always a democratic majority. If Long Island voted separately, there would be different results. I believe Nassau and Suffolk both had greater votes for Trump.

Long Island is not the only island that would want to get separated from the rest, Sicily has been wanting the same for the longest time lol!

Yes, you guys are right about Nassau as of now (they're still counting though).

The not bothering to vote because it doesn't matter goes both ways, for most states. Since NY is solidly blue, a lot of Democrats don't vote because they know their vote won't matter, either. Biden took NY by roughly 900,000 votes. What does one more or less vote matter in that case?....

The EC does disenfranchise a lot of voters, I think. Once again, one candidate is ahead by roughly 4 million votes in the Popular Election, but we're deciding the Presidency based on a few thousand votes in one or two states.

The local elections make a difference, though. Individual votes matter, and the local politicians make a lot of decisions that directly affect us. That's why I vote every year, even in the "off" years, when it's just the local people running.

You can say that same thing about any state. If you removed the large populated areas then the vote would be overwhelming red.

I live in a liberal area upstate. I actually never realized how liberal it was until this election year. Everyone in my neighborhood has Biden signs with the exception of one house. In my son's first grade class, Trump only got one vote.

I’m going to very humbly say this.

If you don’t vote you are a moron.

People who don’t vote who think their vote is useless have been “taught” that.

She misses out on local politics. She misses out on ballot initiatives. I’m living in red territory so I vote blue in EVERY election in my area. My voice counts. My vote counts. Anyone who does not vote has been taught some real crap and I’m sorry for them.

And yes. If the state was broken up it would be 1/2 and 1/2 no question.

But look at Nevada. 2 counties out of 25? Are caring the election. So thank god for the blue voters in the 2 big counties.
