Introducing DC to sibling for the first time..

Just want to see how others did this.

Did you bring your DC to the hospital to see their new brother/sister or did you introduce them at home?

Re: Introducing DC to sibling for the first time..

We're debating this right now.

I want DS to come see me in the hospital but, DH (and my mom) think it's probably not the best idea.

The hospital is 30 minutes away. He's not a fan of drs and offices and such, and DH has taken him with him to an appt and he freaked when they took DH's blood pressure. They are also afraid he's going to be sad to leave without me and figure he won't care otherwise.

We'll see what happens. If I end up with a c-section, it might be a different story though (since I'll be there longer).

Re: Introducing DC to sibling for the first time..

We did it at home. DS #1 was only 13 months-old when my second son was born. It was just easier than bringing him to the hospital.

DS will be 2 when the baby arrives and I plan on having him meet her at the hospital. Besides, I've never spent a night away from DS, so I will really miss him and would like to see him while I'm there for a few days.

DD will be 31 months when DC #2 comes. DH and I plan to have her visit me in the hospital. She talks about it all the time.

Re: Introducing DC to sibling for the first time..

Thanks ladies. DD will be 20 months when baby is born. I am hesitant for her coming to the hospital because I am afraid of how she will take it but I also want her to be one of the first people to meet her new sibling!

Re: Introducing DC to sibling for the first time..

Our plan was to introduce them at the hospital but DS ended up In the NICU so he couldn't see him. We showed him pictures when he visited.
We ended up having to introduce him when he finally came home.

DS was 3 mths short of being 3 when DD came along. He was one of the first to meet her and immediately fell n live with her. A year later they adore each other.

One of the things we did was get a small gift frm DD to DS. It wasn't anything big but he still reminds me today DD gave him the gift.

At home. Dd #2 was born in the late winter/early spring and Winthrop had the ban on siblings on the maternity floor. It worked out better I think.

Re: Introducing DC to sibling for the first time..

DS came to the hospital and met DD at the same time the rest of the family met her. My plan was to have DS get into the hospital bed and sit next to me, then have DD brought in to meet us, but he got to see her behind the glass like the rest of the family. She was then brought into us. I did not get to see him first seeing her but he loved her the minute he got to hold her. After DH and I, he was the first family member to hold her. I got out of the bed. We propped a ton of pillows around DS and he "held" her. You can see the love and joy in his face. He is almost 26 months older than she is.

I agree - have a present from older DC to the baby (let the child pick it) and have a present from the new baby to the child. Also make sure to have someone whose responsibility it is to help your older child at the hospital. They may want to walk around and not be in a little room for the entire time.

Lastly, when people visit, have them spend time with the older child first and then the new baby.

They did at one point (right around the swine flu epidemic) but when I was there last Nov, I saw siblings.

We brought DS (23 months) to the hospital to meet his baby brother. He was curious when he first looked at him but wanted more to do with playing in the hospital room than meeting his baby brother.

DS #1 was almost 18 months when DS #2 was born and he met him in the hospital. DH only brought him once along with some toys and at first he wanted nothing to do with me or the baby.

When I had my first DH (Nov 09) it was in the midst of swine flu epidemic and no children could visit. By the time I had my second son (Jun 11), this ban was lifted, because my DS came to visit me.

Yes, dd was born on march 28 and I went home on the first, the day the swine flu ban was listed. This was in 2010.
