Re: Irish soda bread

here's my families. My Grandmother brought it over from Ireland with her.

Preheat oven to 350
2/3 C seedless raisins
2 C sifted flour
1 1/2 t baking soda
1 1/4 t baking powder
1 t salt
3 T sugar
1 /2 t caraway seeds (optional)
3 T white shortening or butter
1 C buttermilk

1. sift together dry ingredents
2. Add caraway seeds, then cut in the shortening with a pastry cutter
3. Pour in buttermilk and add raisins
4. turn out dough onto floured boards and knead gently with a few strokes
5. Shape into a a circle and fit into 8" cake pan
6. Cut loaf crosswise into quarters about 2/3's of the way theough dough
7. Brush with melted butter and healthly sprinkle of sugar
8. Bake for 30-45 minutes at 350 or until light brown

serves about 6-8
