Please post your Irish Soda Bread recipe!!!
Obviously I could look this up online, but I love making recipes that were handed down through family generations.
My mom is in Florida right now so I can't get her recipe.
Thanks!

Re: Please post your Irish Soda Bread recipe!!!
I have to dig mine out---they are sooo good. I have 2 seperate ones. One is from my great grandma from Ireland and it is a true soda bread. The other is from my uncle's mother, also from Ireland and it is more of a dessert/cake type bread. I'll post them both later.

Thanks! I've had both kinds just like you mentioned - one is more of a bread where the other is sweeter. I like them both!
And it's soooo good when you toast a slice a little bit, then put butter and jam on it

IRISH SODA BREAD
4 cups of flour 1 cup of sugar 1 teaspoon of baking soda 2 teaspoons of baking powder 1 teaspoon of salt 1 egg 1 1/2 cups of buttermilk 1 1/4 cup of raisins (soak raisins in water, OJ, or booze overnight) 2 teaspoons of melted butter
Combine everything in a big bowl. Mix with your hands. Transfer to pan — Cast Iron is best!
Cook @ 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes
When done wrap in dish towel & cool on it's side (I put it in the dish rack)
Notes— This will make either 1 big loaf or 2 med size loafs. For Extra moistness—Add 1 tblsp of the leftover raisin liquid to mix. Cover with tin foil approx. half way through cooking so the top doesn’t get too dark.

Thanks DonnaMarie! I had never heard of soaking the raisins in OJ or booze! And I've also never used cast iron to bake it in, but that's a great idea.

Irish Soda Bread (this is the recipe that is sweeter)
4 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup sugar
Mix all of the above ingerdients together. Add the following ingredients and mix by hand:
1 stick of softened butter 1 1/2 cups buttermilk 1 cup raisins 1 tablespoon carawy seeds (optional)
Knead all of the ingredients together. Put into a buttered 9 inch cake pan. Poke the top with a fork in a few spots. Bake for 1 hour at 350. My oven always takes about 1 hr 15 min but my Moms used to take 1 hr. (if you notice it getting too dark loosely cover with tin foil--it depends on your oven)

the reason I do that is I've found it makes for a moister bread, otherwise the dry raisins will suc k the moisture from the mix
I mostly use water, oj was a nice twist and well rum.... hey, why not

I'm definitely going to try this one. My husband's family is Spanish, and I'm 100% Irish...so we're having them over for corned beef and cabbage on Saturday. I think this sounds like a great recipe to add to the mix

Silly question here, but why is this one sweeter? It has the same amount of sugar, but less raisins. I think (but am not sure) that the other differences in the ingredients wouldn't make this a sweeter bread.?

Re: Please post your Irish Soda Bread recipe!!!
It comes out more cake like than bread like. If that makes sense?? It is not a true cake but it is different than regular irish soda bread that you buy in the bakery.

You mean sweeter than the recipe that DonnaMarie posted? I think they both are the same and she didn't notice that the one DonnaMarie had posted was the sweet recipe too.
My sister just sent this to me - I think it might be my mom's, but she didn't say! This is the one that's not as sweet.
4c flour 1t salt 1/4 c sugar 1t baking powder 2T caraway seeds 1/4c butter 1c raisins - cut up (if you don't like big chunks of raisins) 1 1/3c buttermilk 1t baking soda *1 egg, optional combine flour, salt, sugar, & baking powder. Stir in caraway seeds. Cut in butter w/ a pastry blender Add raisins, blending well. Combine buttermilk & baking soda. Stir in flour mixture. Turn onto a floured board & knead lightly until smooth. Put into buttered casserole dish. Cut deep cross in top. Bake 1 hour at 375.

Thanks, that is what I think. I did not mean is was sweeter than the recipe DonnaMarie posted, I just meant it was more along the lines of a cake/sweet than a true bread.

I would, but our family recipe is under lock and key. Only one person, from one generation can have it at a time.

Re: Please post your Irish Soda Bread recipe!!!
Thanks for posting these. I never had soda bread before and we had a soda bread contest at work the other day. I loved them all and the caraway seeds added a really nice taste. Mrs Kelly, did you use a cast iron pan or just an ordinary cake pan? Is that a Maltese you have? I have one too and he is so precious!

I made this for our dinner last night..no joke, this is the BEST irish soda bread I've ever tasted. It was OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! Thank you SO much for the recipe, I gave out 3 copies last night!
P.S. We used the cast iron skillet, as suggested...it came out perfectly!!!

Well, Ann, you are the hero of the moment in my family! We had an Irish Soda Bread recipe that went back generations. My mom LOST IT in a move about 15 years ago. Since then, we have all tried differing versions each year but none has come nearly as close as your recipe did!!!!!!! Ours didn't have raisins but did include the egg (my mom remembered that much at least ) so I made it that way and OMG - it might really be the one.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh good, glad I could help! I made the sweeter version on Saturday and I haven't been able to stop eating it!!! Soaking the raisins makes such a HUGE difference, and the cast iron skillet worked out great. Thanks for those tips DonnaMarie!

Re: Please post your Irish Soda Bread recipe!!!
Question: I've never had Irish soda bread. What is it supposed to be like? Is it more bread, or cake? And is it sweet, or plain? Is there supposed to be a crust on the outside, or is it all supposed to be moist?
Thanks!

Depends on the recipe...the one I make is more like cake and most. Some are more like bread with a crust and a little dry.
