IRS Identity Theft - My Story....Update 8/12/2008

Hubby and I have been married two years, and last year (TY 2006) we filed Joint/Married Federal returns. This year, for TY 2007, we filed the same - Joint/Married in February 2008.

Issue#1 - we couldn't e-file b/c someone else used my SS# to file. So, we file a paper return (as advised by the IRS and our accountant.)

Issue#2 - March/April rolls around, and we're checking our refund status, and no progress has been made. No information available. Fair enough, it's peak tax-time, we'll wait and follow-up with the Tax Advocate Agency - a division of the IRS that escalates issues.

Today, I call to follow up on our return/rebate and it's been 30 days since we filed a claim with the Tax Advocacy.

Here's what happened:

(real) paper filed w/Direct Deposit

Name: Christine X XXXXX (Married Name)
Location: NY
With SS#: 123 45 6789
Status: Joint/Married
Amount: $XXXX
Employment: Financial Services Co.

vs.

(fake) e-filed w/Direct Deposit

Name: Chris XXX (maiden name)
Location: CT
With SS#: (same as real)
Status: Single
Amount: $XXXX (significantly more than we are entitled to)
Employment: Hospital in CT

The IRS was able to give me the address of the other (fake) return. That address is one of a Post Office in Hartford, CT. IRS confirmed my identity, I provided my employer - so I'm good to go, and take all the appropriate actions of notifying the FTC (Federal Trade Commission, Identity Theft), the three credit reporting agencies, and the only step I have left is filing a report with my local police (doing that tonight.)

The IRS stated that a majority of these cases are so that the person can prove employment to agencies such as the IRS and INS and stay in the country.

I cannot even begin to tell you (unless of course you've been a victim) how violated and upset I am. I feel completely helpless right now and don't even know what to do. I know it's a waiting game...and each authority is investigating as necessary, but I cannot help this feeling of complete despair. I'm upset with my government that's supposed to protect me....

I can't help but feel like changing my name because of marriage was when this possibly happened.

ETS: Please check your credit report often...I would hate for someone else to fall victim.

UPDATE: 8/12/2008

So it's been 7+ months since we filed for our return, I am happy to say that we just received a call that our tax refund will be deposited into our account this Friday.

The TaxPayer Advocate center (a division under the IRS) has been fantastic to deal with...but it really showed us how our government is lacking in so many ways...all they needed was a COPY of my SS Card faxed over...why it took 7+ months for that is beyond my understanding....Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am so sorry this happened to you. I recently ran my report and found out someone had used ALL my personal info to fraudulently open accts. I have since cleared it up, got an extended alert on my file for 7 years, ordered monitoring programs, etc.

It is very very violating. I was a patient at a medical center that recently had a security breach (they sent me and many others a letter) so I KNOW my info was stolen from there.

Your situation, can't they trace back who this person is since they are actually working under your info????Chat Icon

Re: IRS Identity Theft - My Story....Update 8/12/2008

I think I mentioned this- but put a fraud alert on your credit report if you haven't done so already

you have re-do it every 3 months

I just did it b/c of the check that was stolen!

Glad you got this worked out!

Wow! I am happy you are finally getting your refund but it is scary how easy it was for someone to take your identity. Are they doing anything to catch that person?Chat Icon
