Is $10 an hour for a Mother's Helper high?

I have no idea what the going rate is. The daughter of someone I work with is one. She's 14.

I was thinking about having her come over once or 2x a week when I am home just to distract Elizabeth and occupy her.

Is $10 the going rate. I thought it would be lower since I'm going to be home.

yes! Mine is "officially" $6 although I give her a tip and round up the bill.

I give her $20 for 2.5 hours and that's high. Well, much more than originally agreed upon.

I know she charges $7 for someone but she has 2 kids.

But I give her more if she babysits or do more (like at the party we had!).

sounds about right to me. I used to get like $6 or $7 an hour back when I was in HS and a mothers helper....that was in 1993-1994, so $10 today, sounds about right.

I'd probably compromise at $8. But I guess 14 she could get a job paying minimum wage but sure that's not $10 an hour yet...is it?

We pay $10 for a babysitter. For our mother's helper, it has been $5 per hour. I would only pay high for someone I can actually fully leave alone with my son while I go out of the house.

Seems high for a 14 year old who is only helping, not babysitting on her own.

Not sure. I pay my babysitter who is 16 $10 hr b/c she comes over at night when both kids are sleeping. Some probably think thats cheap Chat Icon but she actually only asked for $7.

What would she be doing? I would say anywhere from $8-10/hr.

Minimum wage in NYS is $7.25 in alignment with the Federal Minimum Wage. (just to answer the comments from above)

I say start her at $8 or $9 and as she wins you over give her some increases or tips along the way.

I didn't make 10 dollars an hour when I worked full time as a Nanny for 3 children. That is way to much. Especially for a 14 year old. Minimum wage has nothing to do with it. She is basically a child who is helping out...

Re: Is $10 an hour for a Mother's Helper high?

Its high!

I may have a 16yr old girl do the same for me, say for trips out and need her help and I plan on doing $5/$8 an hr.

Im still there so shes just helping, not watching my kid the entire time alone.

Re: Is $10 an hour for a Mother's Helper high?

That is high I think to have her just play with dc. A young college girl I know asked if she could babysit for my kids whenever and she asked for $10 an hour and I know I'm getting a deal on that one. To have her play with her only at 14 I'm sure she would appreciate $5. I say anywhere from $5-8.

Just want to add I want one!

Re: Is $10 an hour for a Mother's Helper high?

Thanks - I thought that was too high. She would just be playing with Elizabeth. I wouldn't trust her with Alexandra yet. I was also thinking about asking her if she would go to the town pool with us and entertain E in the kiddie pool.

Her mom said she would get back to me with the price, so, we'll see. And I would assume I would have to pick her up and drop her off since her parents work.

She lives in Bethpage if anyone else is interestes.

Yes. I'd say a mother's helper is more along the lines of $5-7, because you're there.

I found a new babysitter - not a mother's helper (14 yo). She told me she charged $5/hour the last time she babysat. I told her that was too low & I'd pay her $7...which is still low IMO.
