Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?
Gas price increase Food increase Increase in tolls Stamps going up (again)
I cant afford to live anymore
Just a vent. I guess reality is starting to kick in. How in the world do families survive on only one income today?
I'm all bent out of shape today. This economy is getting worse & worse.

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?
Its definitely getting harder. Luckily we are not too affected by the gas prices - we have only one car which is a 4-cylinder and we go together to the train station. For food, I have been buying more and more generic.

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?
I guess because I live in the city and everything is already over priced, we are not feeling it really! And this year we have two babies and have child care costs! We have just cut back on eating out and I am not shopping like I used to!

We just have had to cut back on things. We use coupons more than we used to.
Gas is killing both of us...I know next car will be a hybrid for sure

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?
we can't even afford to live on 2 salaries, much less one. gas is KILLING us. i have to fill up my truck every other day and he fills his car every 3 days or so. it makes me want to throw up every time.

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?
we survive on 1 1/2 salaries... which really isn't a lot and we do fine. I think a huge part of this is that we do NOT own a house but rent- while people think renting is "throwing money away"- we aren't as affected by the increases as home owners are as we don't have to pay for things like heat. Over the past 3 years our rent has not increased...

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?
I think it depends on what is comfortable, it varies from person to person.
We haven't been hit so hard by this yet--we have one car and it doesn't go that far from home most of the time. But food--yesterday I spent overe $100, and I can't say I bought that much. I was really surprised.

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?
The gas is killing us. Everyday I pass the gas station and I've never seen the same price two days in a row. I've seen them raise the price 3 times in one day. DH has an SUV and fills up twice a week. I have an Accord and fill up once a week.
Last night I went to the grocery store to get a few small items (milk, bread, fruit, lunch for work) and it came to over $40.00.
Everything is going up but our salary

the only thing that is killing us is gas prices. I have a long commute and am in my car for work. as much as I love my truck, it needs to go!

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?
We are sacrificing a lot to save for our first home. I think we would be doing the exact same things ( not eating out, buying generic, not buying new clothes etc ) regardless of the economy so right now I am not feeling it.
Gas prices, of course - are terrible. BUT we both drive 4 cylinder cars and DH commutes about ten blocks to work and I am about 15 minutes away from my job.

The gas prices aren't affecting us yet. We both work pretty close to home and on the weekends, we stay home and BBQ at home, or go to stores within walking distance. It is scary the way the economy is heading. I can't deny that I am not worried

I wanted to add that I don't go clothes shopping anymore, DH and I use coupons more and definitely shop less..

Our family also. Sometimes I get a little jealous when I see our friends with brand new cars or new additions to their homes.. but as much as those things are nice, they simply aren't a priority for us. So we don't eat out (although I do have to stop ordering out lunch ), we don't have huge plasma screen televisions or the biggest cable package ever, we turn down some parties if we can't afford a proper gift, we don't go out with our friends, we buy generic everything, we buy bulk when on sale, clip coupons, forgo our wants and only buy what we NEED and we rarely go on vacation - so we are able to feel okay even though the heat is on.
ETA: That doesn't mean I don't feel a pinch or see that I am not able to save as much as I used to be able to. But it isn't strangling us... yet.

Us too. We own our home but we have no kids, so it's just us, and we both work, so we don't live paycheck to paycheck.

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?
the food prices is what is really getting to me. we don't drive all that much, and we have a small car (albeit a sports car) but our diet is mainly meat and fresh veggies...so what was an $85-$100 food shopping trip is now over $120.
we are living off of dh's income only now too (and banking mine). as long as we are still able to do this, we'll be fine. we are limiting going out a bit more...cutting back on shopping and "luxury" things like weekly pedi's for me....but we're still going on vacation, enjoying the foods we like etc.
we've also had some unforseen $$ expenses (my eyes and dh's teeth) so that has cut into our weekly budget. I think once that also passes, we'll be back to monkey business as usual.

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?
We are still living comfortably, but definitely spending a heck of alot more for groceries, especially now that I buy mostly organic......almost DOUBLE what I used to pay......As for gas, we both have efficient cars, so we thankfully don't pay nearly as much as someone with an SUV......

Omg, thank God we have a really cheap rent b.c we would be eating ramen noodles every night if we had to pay $1300 and up! Even with a cheap rent we have a lot of work to do on our finances.

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?
We are still living the same more or less, but the cost of things is starting to annoy me more than it's actually impacting my lifestyle.
I posted a thread about paying $2.92 for a medium iced coffee at DD. That's highway robbery IMO.
Is the $2.92 actually killing me financially? Nah I have the cash and we still live comfortably.
But mentally the $2.92 drives me nuts because it's just ridiculous to have to pay that for watered down coffee beans.

Yeah--we're okay too, b/c we don't spend much (although we do need both salaries) but food really is our biggest luxury--especially when we start grilling--you can't grill cheap meat!

We live below our means, it's the only way I can sleep at night. Especially w/ a new baby coming.
Ironically enough, I was just presented w/ a tremendous job opportunity at 7 months preg and I jumped at it. It will definitely help our comfort level and while it's coming at a crazy time in our lives, it's probably the best timing.

I could have written this myself. I pride myself on living simply, I've become a much happier person. The gas prices are crazy and it does affect us, but our overhead is really low compared to other NYers so its not a huge thing.
