We are still living the same more or less, but the cost of things is starting to annoy me more than it's actually impacting my lifestyle.

I posted a thread about paying $2.92 for a medium iced coffee at DD. That's highway robbery IMO.

Is the $2.92 actually killing me financially? Nah I have the cash and we still live comfortably.

But mentally the $2.92 drives me nuts because it's just ridiculous to have to pay that for watered down coffee beans.

I feel the same. More annoyed than feeling an impact, being that we live within our means.

Same here. We are looking to buy a house very soon, so we will proabably start feeling the pinch more then. Right now we live in a city and drive minimally. It still really upsets me when I see the gas prices here. Chat Icon

We are, for one main reason. We always live well beneath our means.

Ditto. We purposely have a simple lifestyle. So for us nothing has changed.

Us too. We own our home but we have no kids, so it's just us, and we both work, so we don't live paycheck to paycheck.

Us too.

This is just how I feel but, this is why I don't want to think about having any babies any time soon..due to the economy. I would like to see if if gets better in a year.. which I hope it will because that is when I would like to have a baby..

me too. I HATE getting gas now, and I'm in my car a lot for work. It just disgusts me to fill up at $50/tank. Its not that I can't afford it - I just don't want to pay it!

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?

Yes. As other posters have said, we live below our means. We do enjoy certain "luxuries" - such as travel and eating out, but we cut back in other areas and we only spend what we can afford. We also are fortuante that both DH and I make decent salaries.

Pretty much same here. We're fine because we're not over the top spenders to begin with. We take our time with things and plan our money spending carefully. While it's not ideal (ask anyone how much I complain about the house not being finished Chat Icon ), it's helped us because we are a one income family (I'm a SAHM and my PT work amounts to money for me).

Don't get me wrong - the gas prices are a huge concern here (DH is in the auto-sales industry) and the cost of food is outrageous! But I still go to fill up my tank and grocery shop. It's a necessity.

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?

the rising gas prices are hitting us very hard because neither of us can afford to commute to work - it's actually more expensive!

i am getting a raise soon, which should help ease things, although i know this baby will take up most of it... plus we are moving into a less expensive place in july and that will help a lot too. DH is fortunately able to work a lot of overtime and that eases the pinch a bit.

honestly, i know this sounds ridiculously cheesy, but after getting upset for months and months over the rising cost of everything and getting further and further into debt - i find myself just appreciating the fact that DH and i have a job and a home and a baby on the way... and i try to worry less about money and just enjoy life.

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?

It's difficult to say one way or the other. My husband is self-employeed and his work is directly effected by the economy so business comes in cycles.

Some months are better than others but all in all we're getting by. We know there's a light at the end of the tunnel for us financially and if we live conservatively for now, meaning no more mani/pedis, not going out to dinner or ordering out and we'll get through this.

If we could eliminate our credit card debt but kept all the other bills that we have (including gas for 2 8 cylinder trucks and groceries), we would be living very comfortably.

I totally agree and understand. Dont even get me going on the "fuel Surcharges" the airlines and cruise lines are also enforcing.

I just sent my cousin info about Continental airlines because she is going on her Honeymoon in October and will be gone for 2 weeks and will be charged $25 for a second checked bag. 2 weeks on a cruise and 1 bag for her and her DH are they mad.

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?

We are OK. I work PT and we basically live off of DH's salary.
We also have always been coupon cutters, and bottle/can returners and "a night out" is having friends come over or we go there and everyone brings a small dish or dessert. We sit around talk, play board games, whatever. It's been like this for a long time.
If we go to dinner it's to Applebee's or TGIFs. We really don't go to steakhouses and "fancy" places unless it's our bday or anniversary and we want to go. Heck, I'm happy at Friendly's...LOL..Really, Sweetwater's is my FAVORITE but that's a "special occasion" place.
As for gas, it's hurting DH. He's been talking more and more of trading in his car and my old one to be able to get a hybrid. We'll see. I have a Santa Fe and I try to walk more than drive. Sometimes it's a necessity to drive though.
Vacations: We go to FL once a year. My parents and my inlaws both have houses down there. We don't have to pay for a hotel and sometimes we eat home, so we don't have to really pay to eat out either. We have never left the east coast. Hopefully one day (I'd LOVE to see Vegas, CA, Hawaii), but, now is really not the time.

This is for us too. I think what helps is I have gotten alot cheaper since having DS. Before him, we used to go out to eat all the time, had a Lexus, spent $$$ on TV's and other electronics, vacations, etc. Now, we pretty much have everything we need and I would rather cut back on stupid stuff and put that extra money away for DS or into savings for something we really want or need for the future.

DH and I seriously re-evaluated what we need vs. what we want. We realized we are both still young and have a lot more than most people our age and should be happy with what we have and stop wasting money on crap we dont need.

ITA- the prices annoy me, but they are not afftecting us too bad. We don't have to drive much, so that helps. It has encouraged me to walk more. I walk to the library and the post office and other places where I normally would not have thought to drive the mile.

We live comfortably in Charlotte, best move ever. The prices are rising here but we have a NY salary and NC salary to combat it.

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?

We have been living "fake poor" for years, so we are okay.

Its really a lifestyle change. We decided that we like money in the bank much more then we like expensive presents.

Now, I will see what is on sale at the store, then decide what is for dinner.

I walk all over town, so I rarely ever put gas in my car.

We are going to try and not run the AC during the day, our attempt anyway at cutting out TV time and getting out in the world.

We are still renting though...hopefully we will get the green light to buy next year.

We're lucky in that DH's ship is contracted by BP. With the price of gas and the price of oil, they have been giving out bonuses and raises like its going out of business.

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?

we seem to be doing ok. we both work and have no kids yet. we are also pretty simple people. we do spend money going out to eat and vacations ( going to hawaii this summer), but everything else we spend as little as possible.
we live very close to both our jobs, so we don't spend much on gas.
we bought our hosue from DHs parents when they moved. its not my "ideal" house, but its nice. and with the interest rate they gave us ( we pay ILs a mortgage) its helping us save money in the long run, and its in a GREAT neighborhood and plenty big enough to have kids in down the road... so thats good enough for me! i wouldn't want to clean a huge house anyway! Chat Icon
we also aren't really shoppers where we buy clothes all the time, and when we go food shopping, we have a list and STICK TO IT so we only get the things we need and use.
its still super depressing to think about though!!

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?

We still live fairly comfortably although this month and last are serious crunch time for us because we just paid our taxes and bought an investment home. But, we're still ok - mainly because, like others, we really do live way below our means. Our mortgage is only 15% of our take home pay (we live in Philly - housing costs are ridiculously less) and we really don't spend much money on clothes, entertainment, etc.

The only thing that I'm really feeling is the energy bill (consistently $600 a month now instead of $300) and the groceries. We're organic and we don't eat meat, so our groceries come to like $1300 a month for a family of three! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Same here! I've been living this way for a long time. I've been living like this economy was going to bust at any time so I'd rather have money in savings. I've been called frugal and it hurt before but i'm always okay financially Chat Icon

Luckily we live below our means, but the economy is definitely cutting into how much we are able to save for a downpayment on a house.

We are also very lucky that DH got a promotion last month and a nice boost in his salary.

I am budgeting though like we have no $$$ because with this economy you can't count on job stability and I want to be prepared if the worst were to happen. I am working on our six month emergency fund!!!

Re: Is anyone actually living comfortable anymore?

We both work in the Healthcare Industry so our jobs are directly affected by the downturn in the economy. We bought a house about a year ago and that has been draining our pockets. We always have something that we want to do and trips to home depot and lowes always are expensive. Other than that we live well below our means.

Tell me about it. Right now we only have one income and we are STRESSED. I still have 2 more semesters of school, but I hope to find a part time job soon. If we had kids, we'd be so screwed.
