Is having a fever during natural delivery common?

My friend had her DS on tuesday and she delivered with a fever and the poor baby has pneumonia. I had another friend that this happened to and the baby spent a week in the NICU on intravenous antibiotics.

Just condering if this is a common occurence??

Re: Is having a fever during natural delivery common?

I had a fever during labor as well and ended up with a c-section. DS ended up in NICU for a week because his blood came back as positive for infection, so we both had antibiotics after delivery.

I don't know if its common or not. I didn't spike a fever with my first ds but I did with ds2. They started me on antibiotics shortly before I delivered and took ds to the nicu after birth. he was there 4 days. They had him on antibiotics.

Re: Is having a fever during natural delivery common?

I had a low-grade fever at the time of delivery and DD had the same (maybe 100.3 or so) but both out temps evened out sighing an hour while I was being stitched up (tear & episiotomy) so it was no big deal and no other treatment was needed.

Re: Is having a fever during natural delivery common?

i also had a natural delivery (no pain meds at all) and hit 100.6 ... which, at Stony Brook, means baby goes straight to the NICU for 48 hrs of antibiotics and Mom gets 48 hrs of antibiotics.

We were both released from the hospital on time and together.

Re: Is having a fever during natural delivery common?

I had a fever of unknown origin. I had a csection. DD was in NICU as precaution and they did give her abs as a precaution also, since she did have some fluid in her lungs.

These replies are interesting.... I had a fever and ended up with a c-section, but DD did not end up in the NICU. Maybe because her heartbeat was strong and steady the whole time.

The last temp that they took on me right before she came out...like 5 minutes before was 99 and that meant that DD went straight to the NICU. There was nothing wrong with her, she didn't have a temp, but they put her on antibiotics anyway and she stayed in NICU until we were D/C'ed.

It was a PIA!

Re: Is having a fever during natural delivery common?

I don't know how common it is but I spiked a fever right before pushing as well and DS ended up staying in the NICU receiving IV antibiotics for one week.

I thought it was so dumb, I mean, your body is going through a horrible trauma - a low grade fever doesnt seem like it is coming out of nowhere at that point!

I guess but considering they have to take precautions in case its some sort of placental infection or something that can pass to the baby, it makes sense.

Re: Is having a fever during natural delivery common?

Had a natural delivery with #2 (no drugs whatsoever) and no fever.

With #1 I had Pitocin and Demerol (though I never consented to it Chat Icon ) and no fever either.

Re: Is having a fever during natural delivery common?

the worst part of the immediate NICU transfer is that @ stony brook, the NICU is on the other side of the hospital from the new postpartum wing. I was so exhausted from pushing my IV pole across the hospital 8x a day...all i wanted to do was hold my baby in my bed without wires and tubes, but i couldn't until I got home. so sad.

I didn't have a natural delivery, and I had a fever during labor. DS went straight to the nicu after emergency c section for 48 hours of antibiotics.

Re: Is having a fever during natural delivery common?

I did have a fever while in labor. During the delivery I overheard the dr tell my husband it was 105 ! But it was 100.5. Lol I heard wrong but was freaked out during the emergency c section. My 9lb 11oz baby was huge in the nicu compared to the preemies but they released him to my room the next day.

I had the same fever, and DS also spent two days in NICU. He was released one day later than me as they were waiting on test results for him to rule out infection.

They thought my fever was from dehydration during labor.

I had a fever(never knew). DS was fine.

The nurses kept me on fluids. Everytime I had to go to the bathroom, they'd have to unhook me. I finally asked when I could get off of them - they said when my fever went down. So i asked for tylenol...
That was over night 1 - I saw DS in the morning.

I had a natural delivery and had a low grade fever. They had been giving me antibiotics on IV anyway bc of Group B strep. They did not need to take my DD to NICU or anything though. It was still lowgrade the next morning (I delivered at 10pm) so they kept me on fluids. Everything ended up fine.

Re: Is having a fever during natural delivery common?

I had a fever during delivery and DD was in the NICU for 2 days. She was out on the 3rd day, I also had to stay in the hospital 3 days even though I had deliverd naturally. I pushed for 3 hours, that is why I think I had a fever. DD was absolutely fine.
