Natural Delivery Recovery

I gave birth on Monday night and although they didn't have to cut me, I tore a bit so I still have stitches.

I'm curious how long the recovery is. I have a really hard time walking and I can't sit in a chair, only slouch on the couch. The pain got worse last night and it's so uncomfortable. It doesn't look infected so I'm just curious when the swelling will go down and if there's anything I can do for it.

Thanks!

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

I gave birth on 7/5, I had some stitches... it took me I would say a good week to feel better... right now I am 11 days post-partum and I feel great, still feel a little bit of pulling and it hurts a little when I go to the bathroom but otherwise sooo much better Chat Icon

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

I had "natural" with an epi but I had an episiotomy AND tore. . .

These were my best friends for like two weeks:
tuks
the numbing spray
the water squirt bottle with cold*er water

I found leggings made the pain a little less (that could've just been in my head though)
motrin every 8 hours, i think it was.

I would say the serious pain probably went away after a week and a half/two weeks.

Move slow Chat Icon Sit on a pillow. Keep your legs up.

Hang in there. . .you won't even remember the pain in a few weeks.

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

I felt the worst the day I came home from the hospital and probably the next 2-3 days after. I felt almost normal by 3 weeks but it improved every day after about a week or so.

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

Agree with previous posters somewhere between 1 and 2 weeks...I used the squirt bottle with lukewarm water everytime I used the bathroom and the foam. Also for the 2 days in the hospital and maybe one or 2 days after I was sitting on ice packs, lol. I had 2 small tears.

I did have pain in my tailbone that made it hurt to sit/stand for a few months after, but that was not related to the tearing.

You should give your OBGYN a call to see. I had an episiotomy and stitches but had no problem sitting at all. I gave birth Sat PM and was home Mon. I was only taking Advil for the cramps when I came home. My boobs were killing me though.

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

I had a lot of internal stitches and it killed to sit or pee for a good two weeks. By 3 weeks PP I was feeling totally normal (I had an epi but I don't think that factored into my recovery).

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

I had a really hard time after naturally delivering my 2nd son

I couldnt walk and sitting down hurt even more!!!

My neighbor bought me what looked like a circular tube to sit on and that helped a lot--we got it at a pharmacy

Also--spitz baths helped tremendously

I really thought something was physically wrong--like a part fell off/was hanging--my dr looked and said it was just needing time to heal

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

I had the same as you, small tear with stitches and it got better every day. If the pain is getting worse i'd call your dr. Take it easy! Chat Icon

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

Have someone bring you some DERMOPLAST. It is the numbing spray that you can get at any drugstore. Usually by the first aid stuff. Spray it all over your bottom throughout the day and you will feel so much better. It numbs it and takes the rawness away.

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

It took me about a week to stop being sore down there with both babies. I did tear as well.

Same here!
I used witch hazel towelettes (put them on top of the pad) and Dibucaine (sp?) cream as well as those cooling pads the hospital gave me.

Same (except I tore instead of having an episiotomy).

The sitz bath was a godsend & helped me manage with the stiches. I second the Dermoblast suggestion too.

I'd say it was about 1-2 week until I was walking normally. Everytime I coughed I was afraid I'd blow a stitch.

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

the hospital gave me this basin-like thing that you put on the toilet, fill it with water (the warmer the better) and you sit in it... it was great when I felt really sore!

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

2-3 weeks it took to recover. I had an epi and I tore on top of that, some of the stitches popped out, so it took longer to heal. You may have to take a stool softener, people don't talk about it, but we all know that could be a big issue, especially with discomfort. Take the pain meds and use the dermocal ( the numbing spray ) along with the cool water in the bottle. That spray saved me!!!

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

First of all congratulations!!

Second, please get yourself a donut pillow/cushion - it saved my tooshie! Seriously - I couldn't sit/nurse at all until my Mom got me one of these. It was awesome. I was quite sore for about 2 - 3 weeks, at least - I had an episiotomy. But I used it for a good 4-5 weeks, I think. DEFINITELY worth the money. Also if you're not sitting directly on your stitches I think it will help reduce swelling/speed up the healing.

Also don't let up on the pain meds - when I did I paid for it! Epsom salt baths help speed the healing too, I think, and it certainly fights off the chance of an infection.

I hope you feel better soon!

ETA: I was very swollen - I think that's why I was so sore for so long, too - you might be also. I never had an infection but lots of pain - I think everyone is different. Second, definitely use a spray or sports bottle of water when you use the bathroom (#1) - not to be gross but urine stings and that helps keep everything from getting where it shouldnt! Chat Icon . Some witch hazel on a pad also feels great.

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

I had a few stiches with DD. On the inside, so I didn't feel it. I remember the swelling of the area in general got better in a couple of days.

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

I had no stiches but, I will tell you I was very sore for a few weeks. I had kind of like "road rash" as they described it. Tons of little tears but, no stitches.. and I swelled a TON! Hang in there. It gets better. Chat Icon

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

It took me a couple of weeks before I could sit on a lot of surfaces. I would say at least 2 to move out of my bed- and onto the couch. Any other things, I needed a cushion.

It's normal-- hang in there! Chat Icon

Re: Natural Delivery Recovery

Congratulations!!

I had DD on 6/3, had an episiotomy and stitches as well. I was in a lot of pain after but I also had a monster hemrhoid (TMI) so I don't know what hurt more. After about 2 weeks I felt a lot better. Use the sitz bath as often as you can and make the water as hot as you can handle...that helped me a lot! Chat Icon

I agree. it helped me so much the first few days. Also the warm squirt bottle they give you at the hospital. Id say in about a week or so I felt pretty good.Chat Icon If you feel like your more swollen then you were you may want to have your OB take a quick look to make sure everything is healing OK.
