Is it "normal" for daycare kids to always be a little sick?
DD goes to daycare 3x/week, 15 months old, and always seems to have a runny nose and cough. Sometimes she doesn't but many times she does. Is this normal for daycare kids, especially in the beginning? She's been going since September so I don't know what the "norm" is...
Also, do you not send them to daycare if they have a cough/cold? How do you determine when NOT to send them (like if they don't have a fever or still seem like themselves)...
TIA!
ETA: I meant to say, I know not to send them with a fever or diarrhea, but what if hey don't have any of those symptoms...

Tommy constantly has a runny nose. He's in daycare 5 days a week. I've accepted it as the norm unfortunately. Maybe it will help build his immunity for school. I don't send him in if he has a fever.

Re: Is it "normal" for daycare kids to always be a little sick?
My DD is 7 months and also goes to daycare 3x/week. She surprisingly hasn't been sick much at all. There will some days where is has gotten a little fever, or a stuffy nose, but it has never lasted for more then a day.
I, on the other hand, have gotten a cold twice already. I think I'm getting it more than she is.

My 15 month old is home with me and is ALWAYS sick. He gets sick from his big brother who goes to pre-k. I feel bad for him b/c he has had countless colds and fevers since he's born...but he's ok so far, he deals with it great! I'm the one who gets upset..

I work at a daycare and it is very normal for this to happen until the child builds up their immune system. It's going to take a long time, you'll never have to worry about sick days in school.

Re: Is it "normal" for daycare kids to always be a little sick?
In April, when DS was 6 months old, we went to visit daycare and a child there had a runny nose. Sure enough, DS got it a few days later.
He didn't officially start daycare until 10.5 months (in Sept.) and almost immediately got a cold and that nose of his has been runny ever since. It's the new norm now.
