is it normal for newborn to cry every second they are awake??? HELP
DS is almost 3 weeks and cries every second he is awake (other than eating). He's on Nutrimagen for 1 week now and I don't know how much more I can handle. Poor DD is totally ignored because I'm ALWAYS trying to soothe DS. DH is completely frustrated and depressed. I'm trying to be strong and as positive as I can be, but it's totally wearing me down. I'm thankful he sleeps most of the night, but the days are impossible.
Moms of newborns that cry ALOT what do you do to help deal with it. We do not have family near by to help.

Re: is it normal for newborn to cry every second they are awake??? HELP
That sounds EXACTLY like Ava. She would cry ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL day long, but at least she would sleep at night. We would do anything, and I mean anything, if it meant she would stop crying. We found out at 3 weeks that she had acid reflux, so she went on meds for that. Then at 6-7 weeks, I figured out she had a milk allergy. Once she was on Neocate, I would say she only cried 75% of the day, but still it was a lot. I found the sling to be a life saver. She really liked that and would fall asleep. The car ended up being pretty good, too, so we'd take a lot of car rides. It was rough, and I had a lot of help, so I cannot imagine doing it without my family. I wish I had better advice, Jodi I'd say that you and DH need to be each other's support system. Take turns taking both kids out while the other person gets a break for a few hours. That small amount of sanity helps a lot.

Re: is it normal for newborn to cry every second they are awake??? HELP
Maddie was like this as well. I soon discovered that she HATED being held like a baby. She loved being held facing out. So I basically hooked my arm around her and popped her on my hip and she was better for the most part. She also loved the baby bjorn, but again facing out so I had to wait a bit until her head and neck control were better. She got much better at around 10 weeks. She didn't have colic, she was just cranky. Do you think DS has colic or is just cranky? Also, I don't feel like I had much help either because I EBF.

Gavin cried a lot during the day too. Some days I couldn't decide if I wanted to throw him or myself out the window!!! The sling worked wonder and quieted him down almost immediately. He also really liked the swing when he was small. I had friends and family who were lifesavers because it seemed DS would cry the worst when DH was away for the weekends with his band....that would have been enough to send me to the asylum. I hope it gets better for you soon, it's rough I know, but when he's sleeping try to relax and unwind......

I'm sos orry- you must be at your wits end. I was just reading "The happiest baby on the block", it's about how to soothe a crying newborn- there's 5 "S"'s
Shhhhhh Swaddling swaying side or stomach (lying them on...) sucking
I find that shushing Max instantly soothes him- so does the vacuum.
good luck

Re: is it normal for newborn to cry every second they are awake??? HELP
My DS was colicky....I spent soooo much time trying to soothe him in the beginning....sometimes I would just run the hairdryer to get him to quiet. I held him pretty much all the time either in my arms or carried him around in the bjorn or the sling. He would only tolerate the swing for a few minutes. He did like to go for walks in the carseat/snap&go though, so we would do that too. Its tough, it was just us as I don't have family near either---I'm sure having to care for another child makes it that much more of a challenge, but it does get better! Oh and he also liked the vacuum & dishwasher!

this book was a life saver for DH and I. I also suggest putting them in a swing to sleep (unless its a plug in swing, batteries will last about 4 days)
my DS slept in a swing for about 2 months. he was the complete opposite though, he cried all night and slept all day, until i read the happiest baby book, and followed the 5 Sss.

You just described my daughter to a "T"!!!! The neocate helped alot but did not stop the crying 100%.
I know exactly what you are going through - I had a 2 1/2 year old at the time and it was so hard not being able to give more attention - I was always with the baby. I wanted to give Ella away - I could not take the crying all day long. I always looked forward to when she went to sleep. She is now 1 year old and much much better. Hang in there and try to get as much help from your family as you can. FM if you need to vent

this was my DD....thought at first that it was just who she was....then figured out (with Ped.) that it was acid reflux. once she started getting axid it made a HUGE difference. it made her into a whole different baby. good luck! i know how horrible it is!

Oh man, that has got to be hard on you Is it a colicky cry or just a cry for attention? What about a vibrating bouncer to soothe him?

Re: is it normal for newborn to cry every second they are awake??? HELP
I do the 5 s's, he hates the swing and bouncy. Generally the only thing that works is having him lay on my chest, carrying him doesn't even always work. Unfortunately that doesn't work for me. During DD naps and once she goes to bed I let him lay on me, but I can't do it all day.
What are the signs of acid reflux?? He does NOT spit up at all and is a pretty good burper. He does fart alot though.
eta: the cry is a loud scream that starts and stops. He gets MAD. His legs get stiff (I can't bicycle or pump them.) I think it's just gas, but really all day?????
I've tried the drops and he's already on nutramigen like his sister was (it helped her)

Was just gonna post this. The book was awesome. BUt the five s's have to be done in certain order or they won' t work.
Swaddle hold baby on side or stomach swinging shhing in ear( or use a white noise machine. We used a hepa filter. Sucking( pacifer, bottle, nipple or your finger(make sure it is clean ).
ETA you can swing him in your arms.

see it's interesting-DD did not spit up either at all and was exclusively BF'd so i never ever even thought reflux. the tip off for me was that she would cough a lot. she also would cry out of no where and i mean no where. she would be sitting on my lap quiet and then scream like the devil just poked her. i read up on silent reflux and had my ped check her and test. that's what it was. the axid helped her so much fortunately..

Yep..that was Jacob...he cried 24/7. Turns out that he had acid reflux. He started on Zantac and the crying stopped.

It could be silent reflux. Maybe talk to the doc about it.
That stinks that you are having a hard time. Paige wasnt colicky, but she was a difficult infant so i kinda know what you are going through.

Re: is it normal for newborn to cry every second they are awake??? HELP
Alex cried all the time for 6 months, and unlucky us, she ALSO hardly slept at night, and we had NO help. That 6 months is a complete blur to me - I think I blocked it out.
There wasn't a whole lot that worked for her - I tried Harvey Karp's recommendations, they would work for a day or two and then she would fuss again.
The only thing that really helped was putting her in the swing to sleep at night, and keeping her close to my body during the day, either in the baby bjorn or the sling. When it was REALLY bad, particularly at night, I would put her in the baby bjorn and would walk on the treadmill on the lowest setting. Last but not least, for your own sanity, go for walks outside during the day with him. The movement should help him.
I know it feels like this will never end, but I promise it will. Most fussy babies grow out of this phase by about 3 months
ETA - it sounds like he may have bad gas. That's what was wrong with Alex - no reflux, just gas. Try laying him on his left side, put him in the fetal position and rub/pat his back - it may help gas bubbles escape. Otherwise, again, it will just take some time for his digestive system to adjust to his new world.
