Is renting a pump from the hospital better than buying one?
A friend told me that his wife used a rental pump for a yr to EP their baby. He said that the hospital pumps are better and stronger.
Has anyone else heard this?
Also does anyone know what NSUH charges per month to rent a pump ?

Re: Is renting a pump from the hospital better than buying one?
I think the advantage to renting a pump from the hospital or pharmacy as opposed to buying one right away is to see if bf'ing works for you. I cant imagine that cost wise it would make sense to rent a pump for longer than a few months since buying one would have paid for itself by that point. I plan to rent for the first month or so to see how it goes and if it works for us, I will buy one. I don't want to get stuck with a $$$ pump if I might not even be able to use it. 3 of my friends who had babies all planned to BF and all were unable to for various reasons.
I'm not sure how much NSUH charges to rent but I think my friend who rented hers from a local pharmacy paid around $50 a month.

Re: Is renting a pump from the hospital better than buying one?
I've been told by so many BTDT moms that renting is much better than going out and buying an $$$$ electric pump from the store.
The main reason being....you just do not know whether or not you will be able to BF until you are trying. I've known people who bought a $300 pump, spent all that money, and for whatever reason could not BF after just a few days or weeks.
I have 2 nurses in my family who work in the maternity ward at their hospitals, and they both agree rent the hospital grade first. It can actually help your supply come in better because they are of a better strength than the retail ones. Then later one, you can buy a good electric pump from the stores.

If you are going to exclusivly pump then yes I say rent. I did for the first 12wks and then just pumped throughout the day once Emmy latched. The hospital pumps are much better and always got more milk. I had a PIS for work that was good, but trying to pump with that exclusily lasted 5days. I was bawling for a hospital pump. I helped sooooooooooo much. It was $62.26 a month for me in MI, but soooooooo worth it for the ease of using it and the relief I felt.

Re: Is renting a pump from the hospital better than buying one?
My plan is to rent it just to make sure breast feeding works out for me and
Otherwise, it's a waste of a lot of money. So I will rent for a month or two, and then hopefully it works out well and I will buy a pump!
