Is this a "new" thing? Shower Related....

Sorry in advance for the length! So when I registered at Buy Buy Baby, I put my home address on file with the store thinking that guests who couldn't attend the shower but still wanted to send a gift would have it shipped to my home. I have indeed received many generous gifts from family members and friends unable to attend with notes attached that say something like, "So sorry I can't be there to celebrate with you", etc. but here's where I am stumped: I've gotten at least 6 shipments from people who RSVP'd "yes" to attending the shower. Now my initial reaction was "Maybe something came up and they can no longer attend", but for the 3 people who are family members, my mom investigated and they are still indeed coming to the shower. I understand 2 of the 6 shipments -- they are especially large items (crib mattress and high chair) and the guests who sent them informed me that they would be shipping to the house rather than lugging them to the shower ahead of time. The other 4 shipments were smaller items that are in no way cumbersome/heavy to carry/awkwardly shaped/etc. Has this happened to anyone before? Do people just no want to wrap and/or carry a gift with them to the shower? Is this a "thing"? I'm asking honestly because I've never even considered attending an event in person but shipping the gift. Also, before I open presents, do I verbally acknowledge the gifts of the people who shipped them to my home and are in attendance? I of course want to thank them and recognize their gifts, but am unsure of how to do it! Thanks, everyone!

Check with the store, my mom bought a gift from macys online for a bridal shower and for some reason the store had it set that every gift purchased online be shipped to the brides address so I would check with the store that they don't have that setting

Maybe the items they bought you were for delivery only and they just sent it to you without realizing. Or maybe they thought it couldn't be shipped to them???

I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that I registry stalk every now and then to see whats been purchased, and tons of items have been purchased that have not shipped to my house! Totally weird!

Some registry items, even small ones, are not available at their local store, so rather then go off the registry and just buy whatever, people will buy online and have it shipped.

I recently bought an item for a shower I was going to, and the choice to ship to recipient was pre filled as the default.. I had to pick to ship it to myself.. maybe they didnt notice when they were ordering it, and it mistakenly got shipped to you

I don't get why that is so weird. I think it's fine. It happened to me years ago for wedding and baby shower gifts. People may not want to deal with wrapping/carrying/picking up at the store.

I guess I just don't understand why if you are physically going to be at the shower (or any event in general), why you wouldn't just bring your gift with you. I understand people not wanting to go to the actual store to purchase the gift, especially with the weather we've had, but if I were in that situation, I would order the gift online and have it shipped to myself to bring to the shower, not just ship it to the guest of honor. Just wanted to get peoples opinions.

They probably made a mistake when they checked out online. It usually defaults to ship to the registrant. Happened to my stepmom once. She was so embarrassed

Maybe they will bring a card, so that when you open the card you can thank them for the gift. Otherwise, I would just wait till the end or almost the end and say something like, "Thank you so and so for the __________ which we already have at home for the baby."

One of the grandma's bought us the stroller and infant car seat and because our dd was super early, before our shower, she gave us the stroller and car seat ahead of time and gave us a box with a picture of the travel system at the shower.

They probably figure that you'll have tons of stuff to bring back home and it might be easier for you so that you don't have to schlep the things from the place back to your house? Or lose things?

Just a possibility but I ordered a gift from BuyBuyBaby for a shower that wasn't available in store. The site told me it would be a few weeks before it would arrive so I shipped it directly to the recipients house. It ended up arriving in just a few days. At the shower I gave her a card with a note and she told me it had come a few days prior.

So even though the shower is 3 weeks away it is possible that something similar happened.

This or they just didn't want to lug it around. I remember when I was pregnant with DS there were like 5 other nurses I worked with that were preggo(all in 3rd trimester). I purchased off the registry but wasn't trying to lug it around so I shipped it prior to the shower. Then day of the shower just had a card with a note. Made my life easier as well as theirs since they had received a ton of stuff to pack up and take home at the end of the shower.

This... For my shower, the majority of gifts were shipped to my home. It didn't bother me at all as i still had a ton of people bring gifts to open. We ended up needing an extra car so i was very grateful to anyone that shipped the gift prior. Some people gave a card with a print out of the item that they sent so i did thank them at the shower. Others who didnt, i still thanked at the shower as i opened the gift beforehand.

I am going to a shower that is local and am planning on shipping their gift. It's easier for me and most likely easier for them.

Enjoy your special day!

I've shipped things to people for showers and people have shipped things to me when I was having showers. It did make things a lot easier, especially with big bulky items.

Last year my cousin in NJ was having a baby shower and I had shipped the gift to her prior. The shower ended up being postponed becuase of a family emergency. When it was reschduled I eneded up with bronchitis and couldn't attend. Good thing I had it shipped because I would've ended up having to return the item, repurchase it and ship it anyway. (Don't see her on a regular basis)

Enjoy your day!

I had a few gifts sent to my house by mistake...the default shipping address on the registry was my address. One guest was upset because she got me a whole bunch of bath towels, bath toys, infant tub, etc and she was going to wrap everything up in the tub and make it like a basket to bring to my shower. So maybe your guests had the same issue?

I'm thinking its either because it was for delivery only, or it was a big, bulky item they did not want to carry with them to the shower.

But those gifts could have been purchased in the store in person.

I'm thinking it might be an error. Happened with my bridal shower, and I just had my husband call the sender and ask if they intended to send it directly to us. Most didn't, and ended up coming to pick it up so they could bring it to the shower.

On the other hand, my dad just bought an item of my baby registry and had it sent to me because he didn't want us to have even more to bring home from the restaurant.

I understand your question, and probably would have the same ones myself.

I would still thank the person the same way as if you got the gift at the shower.. Or, you could always get the thank you out of the way early and have a few less to take care of after the shower Chat Icon You could send a thank you card saying you got the gift and can't wait to see them at the shower to celebrate etc.
