Re: Is this a sign of what our future in homework will be?
I am so glad this was posted bc I actually called the director of my sons school today bc after only 10 classes his prek teacher is telling me he is not ready for this program & I should consider putting him into the 3 year program (he was 4 in July). I have prior experience with the 4 year program bc my oldest did it last year & by far it was not as demanding as this teacher is making it.
Her comment to me is that he is unable to complete his work bc he requires them to sit with him & help him along. Umm sorry, I thought prek was suppose to set the foundation for them for K. This is his first year of schooling & he is willing to learn but doesn't always understand the instructions. I thought the teachers are suppose to help them understand. Plus the hw that is sent home is downright crazy especially when they just started working on letters this week

Re: Is this a sign of what our future in homework will be?
This is crazy! 4 years old need to be playing its bad enough that once they go off to kindergarten they are bombarded with work sheets and he. In a way it's like childhood basically ends at 3 now. My district is looking to go to full day prek and I refuse to put my youngest into it even though it would be free. I don't want my 4 year old in school all day she has a lifetime for that. I think education today is out of whack!!!!!!
I feel for you son it must be so frustrating for him. No advise as I'm sure it's required the he but I would at least talk to the teacher or the director. Tell them that you thinkk it's too much hw at this age. It's not fair for kids this young be turned off from learning.

WOW, I would have been livid if DS's teacher said that me. As it is my opinion of her is so, so - a comment like that would have made me go off.
As far as him requiring someone to sit with him and help - yea, that's HER job. She is suppose to teach them. Especially if they are going to send hw assignments home. They should be learning it in school first!
Wow...I'am so mad for you.

Trust me I'm livid hence waiting til Monday to speak to the director. My mom was a teachers assistant for 21 years in special ed & even said to me, this is absurd & seems like this teacher is pushing him out of the class & making for a miserable first school experience even though he's so willing to learn & has the drive to work.
I pay for this school too so this is another reason I'm in arms. I mean we picked this to get them the best education possible prior to K

Re: Is this a sign of what our future in homework will be?
I feel so bad for all these children getting he. I agree with the poster that said don't even do it, I would try a little but I wouldn't worry about finishing it or pressuring him. Do the big book you got with him, def watch letter factory DVDs. My dds are 4 and in prek in a catholic school in prek they get no hw. Every Friday a folder comes home with worksheets they did in class so I know they are doing letters, numbers, etc in class Unfortunately it is true so much more is expected of kids these days my heart breaks for all the kids

I actually think it's great they get sent home things to work on.
As a FTWM it's hard for me to work on things with DS but if it's sent home and we have to return it I make sure I find the time.
If it's 4 sheets and they have a week then a little bit each night and it's done.

Re: Is this a sign of what our future in homework will be?
I need to know what idiotic school this is! These teachers clearly no nothing about childhood development. It is OK to teach letters, numbers, and writing to young children but only if it is done in a developmentally appropriate way. Essentially, you use play to sneak in learning. Children this young shouldn't be doing worksheets.

Is this a sign of what our future in homework will be?
My DD is I'm private prek and this sounds just like her school. I think the asshole comment is a little uncalled for.
I am getting annoyed and the amount of redshirting I am seeing, of the 12 kids in her class, I think 4 are already 5 and DD is not 4 yet.

Re: Is this a sign of what our future in homework will be?
Why can't you skip the paper/pencil tasks and just do letter work with more enjoyable, engaging materials? He can write on a steamy mirror, or in shaving cream, or in mud. With magnetic letters, you could pick out the ones he needs & he could sequence the letters in his name. He can build fine motor skills to support handwriting by playing with play-doh and modeling clay, and painting, playing with legos & blocks, and doing crafts.
