Let me start by saying that I cannot understand why anyone would want to drive into the city. Thus, if Person B was not willing to drive her car, they should have taken the train.

LOL. That is what I just posted before reading your response.
I was talking about this at work the other day- I think personal cars should be banned in NYC.
The traffic is such a nightmare as it is- way too many cars.
Take the train

Ugh, tell me about it. DH and I drove back from Maryland on Tuesday and I think we were in Manhattan longer than anything. It was HORRIBLE.

On the weekend driving in is no biggie, we did it a few weeks ago and flew right into uptown with NO traffic at all. When we take the kids in I actually prefer to drive now over using mass transit. It's just more comfortable and less aggravation. I hate waiting for trains, racing to get a seat, and dealing with the stroller and diaper bag. I always get a Groupon deal for Icon parking too so that it's inexpensive to park. Chat Icon

ETA - During the week though, I'd have ZERO interest in driving in.

Is this rude?

Not rude but I would not have made her drive her car in if it wasn't running right. I would have suggested the train.

Not rude. There's no way either people could know that the car would break down on the way to the city. Things happen, life happens. Everyone is safe and uninjured. Let's keep things in perspective. Unused theater tickets can usually be turned in for another show.

No. I would of suggested the train. I'm not a person who needs AC so I would of been fine with it. How was the person to know there were other issues besides the AC? I will not drive in the city period and especially not with a new car. Train would of been the best bet.

I think it's stupid. I never understood people who get brand new cars and then are scared to drive it anywhere or put miles on it.

The best option would have been to hop on a train I guess. Sitting in this heat with the windows up is insane. I would have vetoed that

basically this.

i would have never taken the car without AC i got hot very easily i would have suggested the train before doing this. i would have in the back of mind also think that maybe something was wrong with the ca. but i aslo would have driven even with a new car and def. rolled my eyes at the fact there person didnt want to

I have anxiety when driving so there's no way I would have driven into the city. To save myself from being embarrassed about the anxiety, I might blame not driving on something else (new car, etc). So, no, I don't think it's rude. If person A thought there was anything else wrong with the car besides the busted AC, then that person should have suggested the train when person B said she didn't want to drive.

I'm not sure why people have issues with taking the train. We rode the train to Coney Island the other day - yes, it was a long trip (1.5 hours), but it's more comfortable than sitting the 1.5 hours on the road in my car in creepy crawly traffic!

Re: Is this rude?

Not rude. I never drive my car in the City. It was not B's responsibility to know in what shape the car of A was. A should have said, I can't drive my car. A knows their own car and when to say, it's not driveable. Period! It sucks for A but it is not B's fault.

Re: Is this rude?

The way I'm understanding this is that the train wasn't an option due to timing. If person A informed person B a few minutes before B was supposed to be picked up, there probably wasn't enough time to get a train.

Do I think it's rude? Eh kind of, but more so I can't believe someone would agree to sit in a hot car into the city. If I were person B I would suck it up and take my new precious car OR just see a show on another day.

Re: Is this rude?

I don't think it is Bs fault or obligation to take a new car into the city. A should have known the condition of her car and maintained it. Frankly, I would have suggested a train or an uber. But to me, if your car is in that bad of shape, I would have dropped it off and gotten a loaner car from the mechanic or dealer.

Things happen - cars break down unexpectedly. And you usually can't just drop in to the dealer and expect a loaner car to be available. I think that is kind of presumptuous to expect someone else to "maintain" their car - things happen

If I was B, I don't think I would have been to happy to take a car with no AC, but I probably also wouldn't have been thrilled to drive a new car into the city, but probably would have done it anyway. That, or if it was an option, I would have suggested taking the train. Do I think either of them was rude - no. Maybe a little annoying, but not rude. The car breaking down was not expected and things happen. Sometimes things are just out of your control

I don't drive into the city, and I don't let other people drive my car so I would have taken the train.

Rude,ehhhh I don't think so

Maybe it's just me but i wouldn't think a broken ac automatically means the car is going to break down

This. I don't blame the person for not wanting to drive a brand new car into the city but I would have suggested taking the train instead.

I agree. DHs brand new car was hit by a taxi in the city less than a week after he got it. He had a nice big yellow scratch on the side of the car for quite some time.

Yea, I do think it was pretty rude. If Person A was nice enough to offer to drive Person B then Person B should've been nice enough to offer Person A a ride if she was having car trouble. I think it was pretty selfish and rude to not offer to drive because she has a "new car". So what??...........cars are meant to be driven. Give me a break.Chat Icon

ETA - Put aside that the car broke down because that was unforeseeable however, in these VERY HOT summer temps how utterly ridiculous to not offer to drive when your car has working A/C. NO way in hell I'd sit in someone's hot box and melt all the way into the city. Yuck.

I personally think it is. I can't drive in nyc. It's too stressful and gives me anxiety. But everyone handles driving differently.
I have seen how the cabbies drive in NYC. No way am I tangling with them, when mass transit is so widely available and easy to use.
I wish more people would take advantage of the mass transit system- NYC would have a lot less grid lock

TBH, if I were A, I would think B is a selfish pain in the ass and that would probably be the last time I did anything with B. Get over yourself, B. B would rather sit in a stifling car than use her new car? That is just whacked.

I was totally joking, driving there is crazy!! I personally hate mass transit (especially with the kids) , so I deal with the craziness .

Is this rude?

Thanks for all the input. It didn't happen to me personally, happened to someone in my family. To give more details, the drive actually isn't too bad because they are coming from Queens, no LI, they got their tickets refunded, and I have no idea why no one suggested the train or uber. That was the first thing I asked when
i was told the story.

Really? Why couldn't they have taken the train? I can think of several reason a person might not want to drive their new car into the city, none of which are necessarily selfish or rude. While I would have driven, I know some who lease their cars and with long commutes they don't drive their car that often for more personal use, never mind into the city. They are limited in their lease miles, so the car is mainly for work. One big reason I can think of is that I know several people who are very uncomfortable driving in NYC. So uncomfortable, in fact, they will not drive in the city for any reason. if the car AC wasn't working and be didn't want to drive, they should have hopped the train. I would certainly never drive into the city on a super hot day with no AC. Now I might think it was rude if she regularly drives into the city or drove in the day before, but I would assume it was rude.
