So disgusting This is why I use paper towels to open bathroom doors and people look at me like I'm the strange one.

I always do and it grosses me out bigtime not too...but I always wonder why people make such a fuss over it?
First off Pee is STERILE...so its pretty much the most germ free thing there is....and theres just as many germs on a door handle or an elevator button etc.
I mean, Dont get me wrong, ALL FOR insisting hands be washed, I just find the absolute horror of it kinda funny.
yeah, pee may be sterile, but maybe the people are touching things other than pee... then its not sterile and you dont know what they touched when they were in there...

now see, I think for this reason, people should wash their hands before peeing. Only clean hands should go near the vajayjay.

If we went by this logic we'd all be washing our hands every 5 sec. The bathroom door is not the only thing in the world with germs on it. If anything, studies have found that the bathroom is actually the cleanest place in the entire office. Do you wash your hands after getting a hot cup of coffee out of the machine? How about when you dial out on the fax machine? Photocopying? Making a telephone call? Picking up a pen? Stapling? Hole punching? The list goes on and on. Take a look at this study.

Re: It amazes me how many people don't wash their hands after using the bathroom
I always wash my hands, no matter what. I have a thing about germs. But after washing my hands, I dry them off in the bathroom and I use the papertowel to open the door, because I don't want to touch that gross handle that has god only knows what on it. I then throw the papertowel out after I have opened the door. The trash can is right at the door.

just to throw it out there, I usually walk out of the bathroom with my paper towels STILL drying my hands b/c I HATE HATE HATE residual wetness on them and I don't feel like standing around the bathroom while I wipe off my hands.
so perhaps she, like I, threw them in a trash receptacle other than the one in the bathroom.
Good point--some people also use their paper towel to open the door b/c they don't want to touch the handle with their hand...

Re: It amazes me how many people don't wash their hands after using the bathroom
See- I am FAR from a germophobe. And I know that my desk, my mouse, my laptop, my pen etc- are TEEMING with germs. And I'm rarely sick.
But I think the whole bathroom thing is what grosses me out. Your hands are dangerously close to some dicey parts of your body when you use the toilet. Is it that hard to wash up afterwards? And what about when people have their periods- and are changing tampons? I would REALLY like to think that they are washing after THAT!

Re: It amazes me how many people don't wash their hands after using the bathroom
I'm far from a germaphobe, but it boggles my mind that people don't wash their hands after using a public restroom.
Even if all you did was pee, the person before you might have done...well, more than that. Now you've touched the same stall handle that they touched after wiping their ***, so you probably got microscopic bits of poo on your hands.
I'll take dry skin over poo hands any day.

Yes, but this study has shown that the bathroom is actually cleaner than any other place in the office. Therefore, you should be more skeeved out outside of the bathroom than in the bathroom.
BTW: I never touch the handle. I usually use my foot or my sleeve from my shirt. All depending on the location of the handle.

I'm not skeeved out by the bathroom- I'm skeeved out by the people who use the bathroom- possibly get something on their hands and carry it all over the place with them and spread it. I guess according to this study we should do away with sinks and soap in bathrooms then. Why should we bother to wash at all right?

Hygiene Hypothesis: Are We Too "Clean" for Our Own Good?
Increased hygiene and a lack of exposure to various microorganisms may be affecting the immune systems of many populations - particularly in highly developed countries like the US - to the degree that individuals are losing their bodily ability to fight off certain diseases.
That's the essence of the "hygiene hypothesis," a fairly new school of thought that argues that rising incidence of asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis and perhaps several other diseases may be, at least in part, the result of lifestyle and environmental changes that have made us too "clean" for our own good.

Perhaps they washed their hands and then ran their hands through their hair or something, to tame the hair? Also playing devil's advocate.

Seriously! I know I'm playing devil's advocate, but if you get poop on your hands and don't wash them, that's grounds for incarceration.

Agree. And I've read studies like the one you posted; vending machines, microwaves, keyboards have a lot more "germs" than in the bathroom. I'd like to know everyone is washing their hands because it may make me seem more comfortable, but in all honesty--people aren't and I really don't think its worth something getting worked up about.

Re: It amazes me how many people don't wash their hands after using the bathroom
I totally believe in the "hygeine hypothesis" but disagree that the issue is caused (at all or in part) by washing up after using the bathroom.
There's a big difference between proper basic hygeine and the overuse of hand sanitizers and antibacterial everything by healthy people.

Re: It amazes me how many people don't wash their hands after using the bathroom
My hands get soooo dry from washing..So dry, the crack..This is still NO excuse not to wash them after I use the bathroom AND after I change diapers. If by some chance, we're out in public and there's no soap, I use the water, dry, and I ALWAYS have sanitizer in my pocketbook. I remember in 4th grade, our bathrooms were in the classroom. Our teacher would NOT let us back to our desks until he observed we went over to the sink and washed WITH soap. I thank him to this day for being so anal about the handwashing.
