It took me 29 years, but I finally figured out how to properly style my curly hair...
I would always wrap my hair in a towel immediately after getting out of the shower. Little did I know, but this KILLED my style.
I went on some curly/wavy hair websites and got some tips and tried them out. I learned to put product in my hair while it's basically sopping wet. I'll wring my hair out a little in the shower and then put gel in it and really scrunch the hell out of it. It takes longer to dry, but it's totally worth it. I do not put my hair in a towel at all anymore.
Anyway...went into the city Friday night and I picked DH up and his first comment was, "did you get your hair done?" (this is the man who notices nothing). Then, I got sooooo much attention from guys and girls kept asking me about my hair. Totally unexpected, but it felt good.
Thought someone might be able to use my advice. Carry on.

Awesome and def good to know.
its too bad that JHS has ruined my curly hair (that I miss).
I would find it hard not to wrap my hair up in a towel

My curls don't set right if I add the product while I'm sopping wet - it gets too 'flat' for me .....
So, if you need to dry a bit w/o the added frizz, a Tshirt works GREAT -
You can't rub though, just squeeze the water out w/ the Tshirt -
This is the ONLY good thing I took from my recent Devachan experience.........
You can keep their salon, their products, and their stylists (I'm still growing out the most AWFUL botched cut of my life !!) - but the TShirt trick is FAB !!!

You know I sort of learned that but never went far enough I guess....I just put the towel on quick and wring once and then take it off, no rubbing, but I still get frizz! Guess I need to go even one step further! What gel did you use?
It's taken me 25 years to still not be able to make my curls look great so you're doing a little better than me!

Really? The sopping wet trick gives me so much more body.
Yeah, I bought Devachan's special diffuser and it did a whole lot of NOTHING for me.
I have also tried the t-shirt trick, and it worked the same way as a towel on me.

No, - it forces my curls to stick together so instead of my natural normal ringlets, I get 'too big' curls that kind of stick to my face ...and I find it doesn't give me enough movement ......people say it looks great, but I don't like it !!

Re: It took me 29 years, but I finally figured out how to properly style my curly hair...
I so miss my curly hair.
When I wore my hair curly, I always rinsed it under cold water and really soaked it. I used a towel, but it really only took a little bit of the water out. My hair would never curl right if it was partly dry.
My hair was really curly, so I needed weight on it. I would use Finesse conditioner as a gel/mousse and just leave it in. Then I would use L'Oreal Pumping Curls and followed with Rave. It was a crazy routine, but my hair looked awesome when I did that. (Most of the time I used a diffuser on it.)
I can't wait until my kids are little older and I can devote more time to my locks.

Leave a little conditioner in your hair; don't rinse it all away in the shower. It acts like an anti-frizz serum, and I found I could use less gel and get the same results. Lol it took me 28 years to figure out what to do with my hair.

Re: It took me 29 years, but I finally figured out how to properly style my curly hair...
I do this already! But my problem is, since its wet I can't tell if I evenly distributed the product well enough. By the time it dries I find out if I have either too much or too little. I have been leaving my house with wet hair since I was 12 - even in the snow! It's a crazy way to live with this curly hair....

Re: It took me 29 years, but I finally figured out how to properly style my curly hair...
I remember when my hair would freeze by the time I got to school. That couldn't have been good.
But I agree about it having to be really wet. I have found that re-wetting it with a spray bottle and then spraying infusiom 23 helps. Then I add a mixture of gel and styling cream. THEN I gently scrunch it in and then I use the blow drying clips and clip back the hair behind my ears. This way, the top stays managable while the bottom gets curly.

Re: It took me 29 years, but I finally figured out how to properly style my curly hair...
I got my hair done at Ouidad once and thats what they say. They do not recommend wrapping your hair in a towel at all. It ruins the curl.
I have my hair JHS now so I do put a towel in it.

Ladies....I forgot to mention the part where I diffuse my hair afterwards. I DO NOT walk out with wet hair. I dry my hair thoroughly.
I use LA Looks gel...nothing fancy.
The website where I got a lot of good tips is:

yes - but that is the idea. if you have thick curly hair this helps a lot to cut down on the frizz. however, for someone like me, who has very fine curly hair, it would weight down my hair too much and i would lose the curl.
alicia's advice is great - i have found that the wetter my hair is when i style it, the better my curl looks, and the softer the curl (less crunch from the gel i use).
i also got good advice when i got my hair cut at ouidad - if you apply gel to your hair in smaller sections, the gel actually gets to all of your hair and holds the curl better. most women just apply gel to the "outside" of their hair, thinking it will get to the innermost layers as they run their fingers through their hair, but it really doesn't. i gel my hair in 3 or 4 separate sections and i notice a big difference.
