It was a LOOOOOOONNNNNGGGGGG night...and VERY LONG post! (we're home from Schneiders - 3:01 PM Saturday)!

whelp.....let's start with 3:00 feeding.

3:00'ish - Emma eats from a Similac Envelope of formula (the sleeve thingies - powder..ya know - tear open the top and you have 4 ounces of powder).. we both nap for 3 hours! WOO HOO!

we both wake up at 6:15'ish and she's hungry. I make a bottle with my pre-measured and sorted (in those munchkin sorter thingies) formula from a can. Within 30 minutes she 'fountains' (my phrase for when she does this - think of when an outdoor sprinkler system comes on - how it bubbles and fountains before making the full stream). Most of the bottle comes up. 15 minutes or so later - she fountains the rest up. Her demeanor is 100% FINE...she's smiling, chatting, etc..

8:45'ish - she falls asleep and stays asleep until 12:15'ish. We bathe her - since she fountained and it got all over her...

After her bath - we feed her - again, from the pre-measured and sorted formula. She drinks most of the 4 ounce bottle down and while the nipple is STILL in her mouth begins fountaining again. She does this 2 more times (total of 3 times for this round) and we call the doc.

She calls us back and says to bring her to the ER - her concern is pyloric stenosis???

We change her onesie again and while in the car-seat - she does it again...not as much this time - my GOD - what was left?

On the way to the ER - i have my hand on her belly rubbing it softly (she eventually fell asleep) and i feel her heave (i'm guessing if there was ANYTHING else left it would've come up).

I cannot say ENOUGH about St. Peter's in New Brunswick, NJ. We were in triage within 5 minutes of being there - and they have a separate pediatric waiting room.

We were with a doctor within 15 minutes and while waiting - she heaved again - another 2 times - but again - nothing came up.

They check her eyes and head and want to do a cat scan - fine. They also have to do an IV, get blood and urine. Our Emma is a CHAMP...getting the catheter - she was smiling at Dave & I and she was just wonderful. The IV however and taking the blood was a nightmare. I don't know that i'll ever get that part of me back that it killed....to hear her howl like that....

For the cat scan they need her to be asleep - so we try the sugar water to try and get her to sleep (it had something in it to calm babies)....but nope. They have to give her meds...she hated that part too - but within 2 minutes - she was OUT (the nurse said it takes 25 minutes or so to work - but she was sooooooooooo tired)....

Cat scan was fine - all is okay. Next up - ultrasound of her tummy...

She's still asleep for the test and they lay her on her side and me behind her for support and do the test. They see that her stomach is empty and that she has some water in her bowels (meaning we have a bout of diahhrea coming soon). They tell us that she has to drink Pedialyte so that they can watch the 'trail' of it to her stomach. She was OUT COLD...and they told us that if she doesn't drink it - they'll have to put a tube up her nose...so i'm BEGGING her to drink - whispering in her ear - please don't make them do that to you...etc. The nurse is NOT successful and i'm getting nervous - but i took the bottle and within a second she was drinking. She drank the WHOLE BOTTLE...

They saw her tummy fill up and said it's NOT pyloric stenosis...that she's okay.

I asked if it could be because of the formula - that i maybe got a 'bad batch'...because she didn't vomit up the envelope formula - but ALL the sorted formula... No one thought it was - but the doc said maybe - she didn't know (i asked the resident in the u/s location, the doc and the nurse too)....

End result - they have no idea what caused it - a bug, a virus, my thought of the formula...

Today she's to get at least 2 -3 feedings of Pedialyte and then TRY one once of formula as long as everything else stays down. If not - we have to take her back for IV fluids...

So - my reason for posting....other than getting some MUCH needed hugs.....

Does this scenario sound familiar to ANYONE? Could it have been a 'bad batch' of formula???

Needless to say i already dumped the formula into the container and have it to the side...she will NOT be drinking that - when we DO feed her - i'll give her some from the envelopes that we have....

If you have gotten this far - you deserve an award and i truly thank you....

UPDATE: she took the first feeding of 4 ounces of Pedialyte (i wanted to give her less - but she screamed and wanted more). After that she burped and we slept for 3 hours... We just woke up and I gave her another 4 ounces (same thing - i tried to stop the feed and she screamed...wanting more). She burped twice and spit up a tiny amount and we seem to be okay for the moment.

Her next feeding she'll get 3 ounces of Pedialyte and 1 of formula... That's the BIG test....

THANK YOU for all the hugs - they are really appreciated!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

girls - she was fine yesterday - little bits of spit up - but nothing major. She woke up at 4:45 and had 2 ounces of formula and only wanted 1 of the pedialyte. Fine. She then didn't wake up again until 10:00 - GREAT... She only ate 2 ounces of formula and wanted nothing to do with the pedialyte. I bring her to see daddy (i am in NY, was sleeping in my mom's bed since she went to work - dave was in the living room) and the first thing i tell him is that something's wrong....she should've eaten much more.

not 15 minutes later out it comes....horrible, gurling all over her. She's in good spirits - upset because it got all over her face, but we clean her up - i change her onesie and sit her UP on the boppy lounger. Not 10 minutes later - HUGE PROJECTILE bit comes out (she was on the ottoman in front of me on the lounger - i was on the edge of the chair - but my shirt is SOAKED) and out comes every ounce of formula she ate last night and this AM.

could this be reflux???? maybe she just can't handle the soy anymore????? she has been eating out of the envelopes - so FRESH formula every time!!!!! i haven't even been saving the 2 ounces from her last bottles - i've been giving her brand new every time. we're waiting on a call back from the doc - but i'm devestated...

other than that - she's in 100% great spirits - laughing, smiling...

i KNOW they're going to say hospital...i'm devestated....please HELP!!!!

okay - i'm going for longest post EVER apparently.

Spoke to the doctor who suggested Nutramigen formula - but didn't specify which - so had to wait for her to call back AGAIN with that info.

He said AA - and when i told him it's not something i can just go 'get' - it's NOT available in stores - ordered or at pharmacy....he said regular should be okay.

So we got it. It's now 8:39 and she has eaten 6 ounces total since we got it at 6:05 - she's STARVING....and crying hysterically because she's so hungry.... She had 2 ounces at 6:05, 2 ounces at 7:35 and 2 ounces at 8:30 because she was LOSING it.

She has spit up but not 'fountained'....i'm so afraid that it's going to happen again... Dave goes back home tonight so he can work tomorrow and Em and I are staying out here to attend a thing tomorrow with my mom... She is acting 100% FINE except the crying for more and more food...

The doc also mentioned possibly sending her to a pediatric surgeon (though i'm going to ask for a ped gastro) to make sure the hospital didn't miss something stenosis wise...because the way she is vomiting (so violently) is NOT okay...

And of course, my stomach is in knots because of this and for those that know me - you know how bad that is...

_______________________________

we are heading to Schneiders in 10 minutes (a close friend suggested we wait the 30 minutes and NOT go at shift change)....

we woke up at 4:15 am to find her in a puddle of puke (not a terrible amount - but bad enough to puddle). I held her and loved on her until 5:07 when she started screaming for food. I gave her 2 ounces and she ate them within 7 minutes (she was starving). Within 15 minutes she vomited - a small amount...and within another 10 - it was HORRIBLE - a LOT came out - i kid you not - it was WAY more than the 2 oz she ate...

i am trying so hard to remain calm - but i was in hysterics when i spoke to the doc who said to take her.... dave went home last night because he had to work...i'm going to call him before he leaves for work and tell him he has to come back...my parents are here of course - but my dad has to be at work at 8 and i need to wake my mom...

please, pray for Em....she FINALLY fell back to sleep after taking 2 ounces of pedialyte (i was so afraid she'd dehydrate and she was crying for food)....

_______________________________

we're home - Emma's asleep and i finally ate something.

I have to be honest - i didn't like the folks (other than the MAIN doc and all the nurses) at Schneiders. The resident and whomever the second person we saw was (we saw 3)....were trying to tell me i was overfeeding her. Um - if i put my finger in her mouth and she SUCKS BIG TIME - she's hungry. Yes - i have tried pacifiers and she spits them out - when i hold them in - she stops sucking and the second i take it out - she sucks again....

The original plan was to feed her 1 ounce of formula and see what happens. They didn't have soy and i didn't have the nutramigen on me (i left it at my parents)...so they decided to give her 1 ounce of Pedialyte - even though i told them point blank - that is the ONLY thing she is NOT puking...

When the actual DOCTOR came in - he asked me all kinds of questions and was like - okay, no - this is NOT overfeeding...there's a problem here....

They called Emma's doc in Jersey and they decided to treat reflux - since she had all the other tests the other day.

They were going to give her a dosage of zantac - but they didn't have any...i'm sensing a trend... So they gave me a script and a syringe to use for dosing and sent us on our way. I asked which formula to put her on and they said to ask our doc....so I did - and he said Nutramigen.

An AMAZING woman on this site FM'd me earlier and said she has a case of Nutramigen AA that she is not using because her son didn't take to it - and she offered it to me for free. We're going to go pick that up shortly and pray that she does okay.

I gave her one dose of the zantac and then she ate 2 ounces - she had small amounts of spit up - but nothing more.

We're bringing her to the doc next week to follow up and see if we have to make any adjustments to the zantac schedule of 1ml twice a day....

An interesting note - after i gave her pedialyte in the car on the way home (she was HYSTERICAL for food)...we get back to Lindy and i'm chatting with her and i have her on my lap - facing me. She opens her mouth and burps and what do i see? The pedialyte come back up - all frothy & she swallowed it back down... I think that's a SOLID conclusion... I have NEVER seen that before...so there ya go.

I cannot thank you for all the FM's, prayers and texts asking about Em. If it weren't for you wonderful and amazing women - i would've lost it a LONG time ago...

I just spent Tuesday in the hospital with the stomach flu. They had to rehydrate me and give me meds to stop my 'fountains' Chat Icon WHile I was there the nurse told me that over half the ER had the same symptoms. It appears something is going around.

And I was doing fine too. I was at work Monday night and all was well. Suddenly I told my co-worker that something was wrong with my stomach. Soon after the fountains wouldn't stop. I went through it all night from out of nowhere.

I hope it's all behind you. Chat Icon

What a day! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I hope she feels better soon.

DS was tested for pyloric stenosis, but didn't have it. He had reflux though, which was why he was spitting up so much and so often.

I'm so sorry that you went through this. Chat Icon

DS had a day that he threw up multiple times. I was actually at work and my parents were watching him. They were very worried, which made me worry. My mom said he threw up violently (sounds similar to what happened to your DD).

DH is a physician and he didn't seem that concerned since babies throw up all the time. I called my pediatrician and he didn't seem that concerned either. They both said let's wait a day and see what happens. DS ended up throwing up a few more times that day but was in happy spirits. The next day he was totally fine!
