IUD
My 6 wk checkup is soon and I have to start thinking about birth control. I hate the pills and I need something long term. I think an IUD may be the best option for me. I was just wondering if anyone has one and what was the insertion procedure like and do you like it in general.

I got it a week ago and so far so good. The insertion was not pleasent but I came home and took some Ibuprofen and a nap and was as good as new.

I had both...my body rejected them but that is very rare.
I took 2 advils before I went for th insertion. It is very quick. I didn't feel a ton of pain..but did feel discomfort and a quick "pinch".
It was fine right after.
I miss the IUD..it was the best birth control I ever had!

I had mine put in about a month ago - so far I like it.
I took Tylenol beforehand and I just had a few seconds of being uncomfortable and it was over. Its really quick.
I'm glad I did it.

i had mine for 7 yrs. it was GREAT!! the insertion is no big deal minor discomfort but no biggies. i loved it. if my insurance covered it i would have it again.

I am looking into this option after I have my girl and I'm good to go. Can someone tell me if I need to get pre-approved from insurance? Did anyone's insurance not cover it? Any info would help.

Just ask your OB and they get approval from the insurance company for you. Mine was covered..it is MUCH cheaper than another pregnancy for them. But I think that some insurance do not cover birth control in general so that could be an issue.

The OB should take care of it. Actually, Mirena will call your insurance (once the OB or even you give them the info) and figure out exactly what is and isn't covered. Mirena was listed in my Prescription tiers and that's exactly what the cost was to me (as it was listed.)
Insertion didn't bother me at all. I didn't even know it was in already. So far, no announcements from me, so gets a positive review from me.

I have United Healthcare and I didn't need any pre approval. It was just a regular OB copay.

I called Empire and it is covered 100% if the OB/GYN orders the device.
I have a friend who's insurance company did not cover any of it! She paid approx $500 for the IUD and insertion.

I have Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield. That's good to know.
I was afraid my insurance wouldn't cover it like your friends.

There are two kinds: Paraguard is copper based and does not release hormones. Mirena is plastic (I think) and does release hormones.
The pros are 5 (maybe more) years of super low maintenance, highly effective contraception. All you have to do is check for the string periodically.
The cons are slight risks of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, slight risk of ectopic pg, discomfort of insertion (though I hear it's very minor), possible increased cramping during periods, and possible heavier periods. There is also a slight risk of uterine perforation.

I have had the paraguard IUD for 4 years now, I love it, the only problem I have is more cramping then before I had it. The paraguard lasts for up to 10 years.

Well, I just had a baby and I want a long term birth control. Does anyone out there know if blue cross and blue shield will cover to get a IUD? Also I was wonderin if anyone had any complications with theirs?

I was just reading this old post! Well, I have the Mirena IUD now since last July. LOVE it. Best form of BC I ever had. I do not get AF now, or its so light and there are no side-effects.

Nope, they did not cover. Must be a different division of Empire. It was a HUGE battle with my insurance (Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield) and I ended up having to PAY for the device. Yes, pay for the little piece they insert, and everything else was covered 100%.  I paid close to $500, but they do offer payment plans.
I was furious they wouldn't cover it. I was on the phone with every rep at EBCBS for months, and just said forget it and paid for the Mirena myself and they shipped it to my docs office. I figure for 5 years, it comes to about $100 per year and that is much cheaper than any pill co-pay I've ever had.
