Re: Jack got his tongue snipped yesterday

Ryan had to get that done too when he was a few weeks old. It was torture for me; my mom held his head b/c I couldn't do it. The doctor told us it actually hurts less than the circumcision.

Glad you made it through! Chat Icon

Wow...I can't believe the dr. did it so young. DS is 5 months and his dr. said that they only snip it if it is a prolem for feeding and for speech. They have found it doesnt always need to be snipped. I had it when I was younger and mine was snipped in the hospital right away, they wouldnt do that for DS. I am going to ask the dr. about it tomorrow at his 5 mo. check-up.

My ped recommended me to an ENT specialist (and said I should do it after he turned 2 months) The specialist took one look at his tongue and said it needed to be done. You can really do it at any time - but he said it's easier to do it when they are this age. He said if you don't get it when the kid is young enough they will then have to put them under general anesthsia.

He also said that Jack's was very severe and would cause him problems down the road with speech.

Maybe your sons isn't as bad as his?

WE did it at two months. I'd rather have it done and not encounter problems that have problems, have to get it done later and have the possibility of speech therapy down the road.

I'm surprised the doc had you in the room when he did it. It is such a quick and, at that age, usualy bloodless procedure, but their reaction is traumaticChat Icon We heard our DD screaming but she was fine immediately after.

BTW: It's called the frenulumChat Icon

There was SOOOO much blood. The dr. said that since Jack is so much bigger then other babies who are that age that he would bleed more.

Ha - I know it's called the frenulum - I just figured that no one else on here would. Chat Icon

Wow...I am going to have to speak to my dr. tomorrow about this at his 5 mo. check up. I would also rather get it done sooner than later, he didnt make it seem like it was extremely urgent so maybe his isnt that bad. I really dont want to have to put him under anesthesia. I didnt even think they cut it anymore...I thought it was done with a laser and than cortorised (sp?) Chat Icon Which ENT did you use?

Re: Jack got his tongue snipped yesterday

poor little guy! Chat Icon

Nicholas was tongue tied and had his done around age 2.5 and I can tell you that to this day it has had an impact on his speech, even after 6 years of speech therapy. There are certain sounds that just aren't where they should be, namely the "th" sound.

The sooner the better IMO!

Oh, and at his age, he was put under.

where did you have it done? the dr we used was an absolute angel!!!!!

ETA: Thomas was 2 1/2 weeks when we did it.

Re: Jack got his tongue snipped yesterday

poor baby...i hope he has a speedy recovery!!!

DS has this issue too and I completely forgot about it at my last appt. The doc said it was a mild case and that he wanted to see if it would stretch on its own. But it doesn't look like is has changed all that much to me.
