James Frey admits more lies
I really enjoyed "A Million Little Pieces" but this does upset me.

Re: James Frey admits more lies
I think that's sad. What's wrong with telling the truth? It would still be a very powerful novel. Or, if you want to get creative - just made it a fictional novel!

I agree, a few exaggerations, no big deal. But outright lies is a shame.
I know a former addict who went through AA. He was initially very impressed but after this, he said anyone who went into rehab b/c of this book is going to be extremely shaken.

I have so much more respect for Oprah for this. She could have easily let it die- but she confronted the problem, realized she was wrong and publically apologized. Now that's integrity.

I agree with you, she does have integrity for admitting she is wrong, but are you watching this? I honestly couldn't stand Oprah before all of this, and watching it now is making me dislike her even more. The man wrote a memoir, not an auto-biography.. there is a difference. He exaggerated parts of the book, I don't believe he's right, but she's literally yelling at him like he killed someone.
The sad thing is he's going to sell more books because of this, and she's getting more viewers... I don't believe Oprah does anything that doesn't benefit herself... Thanks just my honest opinion.

I agree with this 100%, so it is hard for me to feel sorry for her - she will get great ratings for this show too.
I don't usually watch Oprah, but I am tempted to watch it at 7, just out of curiosity.....

It's on again at 7... you should try to catch it. I just feel like she won't drop anything... say it once, fine, twice, fine, three times... enough!

She can't stop talking about being embarassed etc. The real embarassment was that whole call to the Larry King show. Ever since she had the Apprentice people on and she accused Heidi of calling Omarosa the N-word and then wouldn't give Heidi equal time to respond, I have lost MAJOR respect for her.

Re: James Frey admits more lies
I so gotta watch this tonight!
I've been SO on the fence regarding this entire topic, since I read the book and LOVED it before this scandal broke loose.. and its been very difficult for me to figure out where I stood on the issue .. in fact, I was halfway thru My Friend Leonard and stopped reading it because I just felt as though I didn't know what to believe anymore...
While I'm not an Oprah fan , I do not dislike her per se.. but I think that at this point, she's gotta save face here.. it's clear that Frey lied, the Smoking Gun totally rocked on that point.. so I guess by attacking Frey today, she feels she will redeem herself for the call she made into Larry King a few weeks ago... ? (which she really should NOT have done if she hadn't looked into the matter herself...that was sheer stupidity on her part)
I dunno.. as others have said, I dont feel so bad for MYSELF for believing what I read and perhaps feeling duped.. I can get over that. I DO feel badly for those addicts out there that found inspiration and encouragement by Frey's "memoir" of his conquering addiction ...
But to act as though he is "criminal" for what he wrote or keep shreaking about her own embarrasment? Uh... Oprah needs to get a grip then

See I totally disagree. I have more respect for her confronting the issue and apologizing. I also think she is a remarkable woman - very charitable and giving. I think she is a really great person. I do understand the memoir vs. auto-biography piece, but he blantly lied in the book and then lied again to Oprah. This isn't just the way he remembered it, he fabricated many of the details.
But what worries me is that this book touched so many people and really inspired many. What now?

Re: James Frey admits more lies
My plans were cancelled and now I can go home and watch Oprah at 7 - I can't wait.
I have to say one of the major things I felt while reading AMLP was that he seemed like such a "hero" throughout the book - almost felt like I was reading fiction. He somehow changed everyones lives and everyone looked up to him, and the care takers were changed because of him - that I felt to be a little unrealistic. After awhile I was like alright already doesn't anyone not like you or did you not not change anyone's life?
As far as him lying - the small little details I don't get, like why the girl killed herself, I don't get why he'd make that up. The bigger lies, I'm surprised that the publisher didn't do a little research and make sure that if they were selling this as a memoir, that it was all true?

I think the publisher deserves a lot more blame then they are getting. They didn't check the facts and stood by it as painfully truthful memoir. I like how Oprah questioned the editor Nan.

Re: James Frey admits more lies
I just watched Oprah. She was obviously angry and embarassed, and I think it was big of her to admit her mistake. What I did not like was that she made it seem all about her, and it's not. What disappoints me about the whole controversy is that James Frey lied. I read and enjoyed "A Million Little Pieces" and "My Friend Leonard" but I think they should have been promoted as "based on the truth." His truth in overcoming addiction is powerful enough. The fact that he previously went on Oprah and did a whole series of PR across the country promoting lies as the truth feels dishonest. He should have been more truthful. I have to say that his lies do hurt my interpertation of the story. If I had read it as based on truth, I would not feel this way. This whole thing goes to show how important the truth is. If you lie, it always come back to bite you.

IMO...i am going ot have to disagree... I watched it and i felt he deserved it 100%.
Use whatever word you want but IMO he LIED. HE LIED LIED LIED. IMO you write a book and call it a memoir It is just the same as an auto-biography....We all know damn well that the reason for the sucess of that book in part was that people believed this man and what he went through to be REAL.
Take that realness away and you got BORING.
The public was lied to. And from the show, and i totally agree, it makes people question the authenticity of other books. And that is BS. It makes people look at many other REAL, FACTUAL memoirs and has the public doubting whether they are going to bother reading it due to possible Smoking Gun surprises...
He was wrong. And he the impact of that is real.

And i am sure if anyone who backed someone up like the way she did, publically praised him for the book and his life Now finding all of this out is in fact HUMILIATING....and i don't blame her for making feel like the liar he is

I agree with red ...he didnt exagerrate, HE LIED. He didnt exagerrate in my friend leonard his jail experience, he lied, he was never in jail....
The crimes he committed were to show how screwed up he was, yet the polic arrested him for minor things, and said he was nothing like he described.
Bottom line is he was an addict, so what, there are MILLIONS of addicts...he could have written a self help book to help other addicts...instead he took his now comparably mild experience and made himself look like a hero and thats plain WRONG.
I was reading comments on line and the publishers actually believe he wont sell a lot more books. They think this is gonna die down fast and people will stop buying it. And that his future books wont sell( he has a 2 book fiction deal right now)
