Re: James Frey admits more lies
I guess I am the only one here who still likes him... And I can see his reasoning for making up things about his friends...or why he said he was in jail for 87 days...
Im halfway thru Oprah right now-

I actually thought he appeared to be a cool guy, and I do understand why he did what he did, Im just mad he labeled it as a memoir...why not stand behind your writing enough to say it was partial fiction ....some of the things are out right lies, and I dont like finding out afterwards.
I feel like he felt the work couldnt stand up on its own...thats a shame...cause as you may feel, he seems liek a likable guy.

For me, as he was speaking I thought of this b/c I thought of Law & Order and how they say "Ripped from the headlines" - its based on something that happened, just so they can get an idea of a story and go from there. In a book, or even a TV movie I feel like I'm not going to research the details so I wouldn't know either way what details are true- just makes for a good story and that's all I care about.

yea...but then why make any reference at all to reality?
I just think that anyone can say "based ona true story" and write then whatever they want... And that annoys me. I went to see Wolf Creek that said the same thing...And yes it did or could have has some real parts...but the crux of the movie was made up. Was it obvious....yes. but i was more annoyed by the "based on a true story" part more than anything...and although the movie s*cks either way it added to it

Re: James Frey admits more lies
I'm watching a replay of Oprah and I find her absolutely appalling!!! I can understand the embarrassment, but watching this superiority complex play itself out is truly despicable. I wouldn't be surprised tomorrow if we all read that Mr. Frey has committed suicide or reverted to his old addictions. He made his past out to be more then it was, but he still has recovered from an addiction and should be applauded (just as anyone who does) for it. He wrote a novel that was published as a memoir, his memory, of his encounters. How reliable is a drug addicts memory going to be.

see i have to say...that last part isn't actually what happened though He MADE things up...plain and simple. This didn't happen due to fuzziness in memory
ETA...although i agree....any and all recovering addicts should be commended...But IMO he put himself in this position. Him and his publisher... If he falls off the wagon for it...it is HIS doing, not Oprah, not the public, but HIM

I agree that Oprah was too self centered but I don't think you can dismiss Frey's lies. Had they been a few embellishments, I would agree with you but it was deeper than that. There is a big difference between an embellishment for drama or lack of memory and what he did. He wrote lies and went around saying they were truth. That is unethical and wrong. Granted, his story is still inspiring and the shame of this whole thing is that the truth would have been as inspiring and moving.

Other then the time in jail, the manner in which his ex killed herself and the controversy about if he had novacaine or not can someone please tell me the other lies? I also can understand his changing certain things about others in the book. It is his story not theirs and he may have wanted to protect their identities.
I guess I can understand people being upset, but in the end if you found the book to be moving and inspiring I think you can still find it that way.

He lied about the accident that caused the jail sentences, he lied about the accident that killed his HS friend (her parents do not even know him and he said he was driving) he lied about his separation from Lilly, he lied about the dentist, he lied about the fights in rehab.
Oprah asked him. "Was there even a Lily?" and I think that sums up how I feel. If he lied about all that, what is true?

and that is really what it comes to.
Some may be able to just take it for what it was...but i think most will just be left wondering what exactly happened? Is his name really James....
ETA...But i think what is apparent...what i think he should be happy, other than being a recovering addict....
He is in fact an excellent writer...and that i do not take from him.

I felt sorry for him...she would not even look at him...and I am one of her biggest fans! I've never seen her that made. He couldn't even get his words out...
How embarrassing for both of them
Oh and remember when he was originally on Oprah, he went to talk to that lady who was inspired by him and went into recovery? Wonder how she feels....I mean, he IS an addict, etc. But I am sure she feels a little duped as well...
Heidla, I thought the same thing...this was bad enough to make him start using again!!

I totally agree. People need to take responsibility for their own actions. He lied, plain and simple. And he knew what he was doing - he treated them as "characters" (his words, not mine) and wasn't truthful from the beginning. These weren't fuzzy memories, he embellished for a better story....he lied.

And lily killing herself was very emotional to read to me, and that NEVER happened he admitted on oprah...

I was just watching Anderson Cooper. He had on the Miles Davis character inspiration (via phone) and others. It sounds like there is reason to believe Lily never even existed. Disgusting!
