I was just watching Anderson Cooper. He had on the Miles Davis character inspiration (via phone) and others. It sounds like there is reason to believe Lily never even existed. Disgusting!
oh I missed it, and I love anderson cooper!
It really is starting to get me madder and madder!

I missed it....Did they say anything about his parents? They must have known it was lies as well.
ETA: I am glad when I read it that I thought it was total truth. It was a great reading experience. I was in shock for a week.

Re: James Frey admits more lies
Ok, so I was on the train today reading the last few pages of A Million Little Pieces and some lady on the train asked me how I felt about the book..
Here's my take... Seeing as how I am not an addict, I personally don't care about the lies. I still find the book entertaining and believe people do go through the things he explains. However, if I was an addict, I am sure I would have a completely different take on realizing the book is full of lies. These people are reading this book like it's their Bible, and to find out it's fabricated would be a HUGE disappointment.
Was he wrong? Yes, 100%, did Oprah stick out her neck to defend him? yes, but it's her own fault for not checking the references herself... so to bring the man back on and humiliate him, as she says she was humiliated is basically stooping down to his level I believe. I do give her a lot of credit for confronting him and getting more truth out of him, but for her to whine over and over again about how embarrassed she was a bit too much for my liking. When the publisher explained why she didn't question the dentist scene because she herself had a root canal without novicaine, I think Oprah was RUDE to her. Telling her that's ridiculous. You believed Mr. Frye didn't use novicaine while you read his book, now it's ridiculous for the publisher to have not used novicaine? And the clapping from the audience annoyed me. It's almost like Oprah was a bully and the audience were her friends rooting her on. I feel bad for the author and also give HIM a lot of credit for going back on her show and facing the heat!
I think most of my outrage comes from the simple fact that I just don't like Oprah..lol Yes she does good, but she makes sure it's known around the world. I do commend her for building this entire empire from basically nothing, but I also believe she's a bit too over the top at this point (ex: the Hermes scandal).
Sorry so long!

I feel a little bad for him but he shouldn't have lied. And Oprah needs to come down of her high horse. Lately she seems to be a little to high & mighty for me.

I'm watching a replay of Oprah and I find her absolutely appalling!!! I can understand the embarrassment, but watching this superiority complex play itself out is truly despicable. I wouldn't be surprised tomorrow if we all read that Mr. Frey has committed suicide or reverted to his old addictions. He made his past out to be more then it was, but he still has recovered from an addiction and should be applauded (just as anyone who does) for it. He wrote a novel that was published as a memoir, his memory, of his encounters. How reliable is a drug addicts memory going to be.
I am glad I am not the only one who felt this way. I realize he lied and I think it took a lot of guts for him to come on the show at all- he easily could have stopped talking about the book. I read the book long before it was an Oprah pick and I enjoyed it a lot. I agree with what the publisher said that the meaning of the story stills rings true.
I was literally talking to the TV when Oprah kept saying, "wasn't that a red flag? it was for me...." If Oprah is going to promote a book, and has a special printing where they put HER name on it and consequently it will sell millions of copies (I think all of her picks have gone to the top 10 of the NYT bestseller list) why isn't SHE fact checking the books she is choosing? Her company probably has more $ than Doubleday to do that and as one of the columnists said, it would probably take a day to do. I think if I were going to put my name on the cover of a book, I would do a little checking myself. I find it convenient that now she is saying there were red flags.....well why didn't you question that before you made it one of your picks, Oprah?
Second, she basically called the publisher a liar about having a root canal without novicane. Since it is unbelievable to Oprah, it couldn't possibly have happened.....
Third, I think it is an incredible leap when the writer for the NY Times was comparing it to the lies or misrepresentation of the WMD and the sending of troops to Iraq. I don't really get how one can compare those two things and that really blew me away.
IMO, what it boils down to is that Oprah was POed because she felt like she'd been duped and this show was about her regaining the respect of her audience, not about the truth. And after all is said and done, all of this is free publicity for the book, and it will probably sell even more copies.

Re: James Frey admits more lies
I see both sides of the coin as far as Oprah is concerned...
This book club of hers is a huge deal. BILLIONS of people take her word and advice on book selections. So for her there is a lot of responsibility.
So i can see her being VERY upset about that she was in fact mislead, duped, embarrassed...etc
