Jarred Pasta Sauce
Why are people so against this? We were discussing recipes at work and I got quite a glare from someone along with a very condescending "I would NEVER use jar sauce"

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce
I get why people use it... for me, I wouldn't just cause I was raised in an off the boat (dad was born in Italy) Italian family and we make out own tomato sauce each year and jar it. Then we have puree to use and actually us it to "make" sauce (season/cook for eating). I occasionally use redpack or another puree also, but I prefer making and seasoning it myself personally! Like I said, I just grew up like that tho, its in my blood!

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce
I grew up on jarred sauce...my mom didn't even get the good kind- she got ragu and preggo sauces!! Now that I'm cooking my own food I at least buy classico lol.
That being said, I never understood the big deal with jarred vs. homemade. Then again, it may have alot to do with how people are brought up. Maybe for some people who has always had homemade suace one they try something with Ragu it will never live up to the homemade.

Same here. My parents aren't off the boat, but my grandparents were. My family never had jarred sauce - it's just how it's always been for us. I use canned whole tomatoes to make my sauce, but the sauce itself is homemade.
Also, (at least for me) jarred sauces don't taste as good. They have a lot of salt and preservatives and just aren't as fresh tasting. Add to that that even every family makes their sauce different. So even some homemade sauces I don't like because it's different than what I grew up on.

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce
No matter how many times I try to make my own sauce it never comes out good. I can't stand that raw acidic taste and I have no idea how to get rid of it. I have tried sugar and carrots and I just give up.
My favorite brand for jarred sauces is Francesco Rinaldi Orginal. Although I started to buy the Wegman's Brand Grandma's Pomodoro sauce and I like that even better.
One thing I do with the jarred sauce is I either do a 1:1 ratio of sauce to water and then add additional fresh garlic, bay leaf, salt and pepper or if I cooking a large batch I will usually do 1:2 ratio of sauce to water.

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce
It is like if you grew up in Mexico and then someone told you, oh just go have some Taco Bell.
Or if your family came from Italy and you took them to Olive Garden!
Or someone asked you for a really good slice of New York pizza and you took them to Pizza Hut!
Jarred sauce just can never live up to homemade.
I HAVE gone to Italian delis or restaurants and asked for THEIR sauce. It comes in a nice tupperware and you can even freeze it - but it is still technically a homemade sauce.

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce
I usually make my own but If I am in a hurry I tweek the jar sauce.
I sautee onion and garlic, add jar sauce a little red wine and it comes really good.
To get that acidic taste out you need to add sugar or carrots that usually works.

Yup...this is pretty much my take on it. Thats not to say that I don't have a jar of Via Roma Vodka sauce in my panrty though.
DH likes vodka sauce here and there and I just don't know how to make it to his liking.
He had this at someones house one night & liked it. So I keep a jar in case he requests vodka sauce one night.

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce
I agree with pp, it's what you know and what you grow up with. I don't make my own tomato sauce but maybe once a year. I usually buy Classico, Vincents or the local Italian deli by my house.
But I won't buy jarred gravy - brown gravy. I turn my nose up at it, I admit it, to me, it tastes awful. I don't care if someone else uses it at their house, I would never say anything about it, but I will never have it in my own.

I grew up with homemade and do prefer it but the Mario Batali jarred sauce is really really good. No preservatives and most importantly NO SUGAR!!

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce
I really don't 'mind' jarred sauce - but I think my own sauce blows it away. AND it's super easy to make my own and freeze it so I don't usually bother with jars.
I have eaten jarred sauce and it's not something that I want to spit out - but it's just not as good as homemade in most cases.

DH gets like this look on his face of horror when I even look at jarred sauce. I grew up on both and the world will not end if you eat from a jar.

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce
I think some are gross and some are awesome. While i prefer to make my own sauce, I see nothing wrong at all with using the jarred stuff. especially when you just don't have time to make your own.

Im Italian, its like against my families religion to use jarred sauce. My great grNdmother would flip in her grave. I knew how to make sauce before i was allowed to touch the stove.
