Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce

I do both!

I like to make my own and freeze it but sometimes I run out. Also sometimes I use sauce as more of an ingredient so I don't like to "waste" mine unless it's the star of the show.

Sometimes I am just too busy but I usually add extra seasonings to the jarred stuff.

I like Classico and Newman's Own.

It is like if you grew up in Mexico and then someone told you, oh just go have some Taco Bell.

Or if your family came from Italy and you took them to Olive Garden!

Or someone asked you for a really good slice of New York pizza and you took them to Pizza Hut!

Jarred sauce just can never live up to homemade.

I HAVE gone to Italian delis or restaurants and asked for THEIR sauce. It comes in a nice tupperware and you can even freeze it - but it is still technically a homemade sauce.

Pretty much how i feel about it. We NEVER had jarred sauce growing up. I had it at a friends house once and hated it. When we were first married I tried to buy a few different brands to see if I liked them and I honestly didn't like any of them.
My mom and MIL make amazing pots os sauce. Mine is decent.....getting better with time. DH says it is almost as good as the moms LOL But I would rather make a huge pot of my sauce and freeze it then use jarred.

No matter how many times I try to make my own sauce it never comes out good. I can't stand that raw acidic taste and I have no idea how to get rid of it. I have tried sugar and carrots and I just give up.

Try nutmeg!

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce

Frankly, it is rude for people to say "I would never use jarred sauce" unless they are a good friend who is saying it in playful manner (as I have in the past to my friends Chat Icon )

Jarred sauce IMO is nasty and it is fairly simple to make a quick sauce.

If you like jarred sauce then who cares! Eat it.

Otherwise if you don't and don't want to make it I recommend going to an Italian Deli/Salumeria that makes there own. Buy it FROZEN not jarred from a neighborhood place that makes their own. SO much better, I mean hey it IS homemade just not your home Chat Icon the jarring just tasts yuck to me, maybe it is the preservatives.

The freshness of homemade sauce just tastes better. I grew up on it too!

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce

This topic was brought here before and i got to the conclusion that Jarred sauce for some is like instant rice for me. I dont like it I didnt grew up with it and it is not something I even consider buying when going to the supermarket. It's what you grew up with but I would never say something is nasty just because is not my taste.

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce

Full Italian here and no one can make sauce as good as "Victoria" marinara. I hate my family's sauce, which is why I don't make my own. Love Victoria!!

I like to make my own sauce but I don't always do so. Hence, jarred sauce is easy. Is it preferred? No, but it's an alternative. You CAN tell the difference though! Chat Icon

I come from an Italian family as well and jarred sauce is kinda looked down upon. DH uses it all the time though when he makes himself dinner during the week since it is quick and easy. When I make sauce I will use canned tomatoes (combo of puree and crushed)

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce

My family is not italian and neither are my inlaws. DH and I both grew up on jarred sauces, and not particularly good ones. I only made my own sauce in the past few years - before then I would start with jarred sauce and add to it.

I'd say these days I make my own sauce 1/3 of the time and start with a jarred sauce 2/3 of the time, but I don't buy prego etc. I buy the store brand of a local specialty shop that is made from only 4-5 ingredients and tastes as good if not better than the sauce I make! Chat Icon

If any sauce snobs have a recipe to share, feel free to FM me. I'm always looking for nice homemade sauce recipes

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce

I dont use jarred sauce ever, but I buy either crushed tomatos or puree and make my "own" that way.

I like tuttoroso the best.

jarred sauce is great in a pinch.

that said, homemade sauce is pretty simple to make, and if you make enough for an army and freeze, it's not too hard to have it on-hand like jarred sauce. maybe that's why? there's definitely a difference in taste.

I get why people use it... for me, I wouldn't just cause I was raised in an off the boat (dad was born in Italy) Italian family and we make out own tomato sauce each year and jar it. Then we have puree to use and actually us it to "make" sauce (season/cook for eating). I occasionally use redpack or another puree also, but I prefer making and seasoning it myself personally! Like I said, I just grew up like that tho, its in my blood!

Same here. My parents aren't off the boat, but my grandparents were. My family never had jarred sauce - it's just how it's always been for us. I use canned whole tomatoes to make my sauce, but the sauce itself is homemade.

Also, (at least for me) jarred sauces don't taste as good. They have a lot of salt and preservatives and just aren't as fresh tasting. Add to that that even every family makes their sauce different. So even some homemade sauces I don't like because it's different than what I grew up on.

Exactly the same for me. Not something I EVER had growing up, and now I just don't like the way jarred sauces taste. I always make my own.

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce

100% Irish here, hence, jarred sauce at all times! My mom does make her own sauce but I dont really like it. I have tried my own as well numerous times and just cant get it right. It's not in the genes! I have gotten an awesome jar at Stew Leonards in White plains that I think tastes VERY close to a good homemade...just wish it was closer so I could get it all the time. Fairway also makes a good sauce. I wont buy any old sauce but I do not make my own.

I use a TINY pinch of cinnamon and it cuts the acid.

I have used jarred sauce in the past, but now that i've perfected my homemade sauce (and freeze it) i only use jarred if i have none frozen and i don't feel like cooking for myself whike DH is at work. There's one made in NJ that's really good, it has like 4 ingredients and no preservatives.

Edited to answer the OP's question Chat Icon

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce

I make my own sauce bc I know exactly what goes in it.

I grew up on jarred sauce and never had homemade until my sister married an Italian guy and we had dinner at his parents' house. I thought it was ok. I like mine much better. I also like my MIL's sauce. It's simple and fresh.

Re: Jarred Pasta Sauce

We always make our own sauce and we jar it and make enough for about 6 months at a time, the jarred sauce from the stores never tastes good to me. I like the way homemade tastes better, it's how everyone in mine and DH's family eats sauce. We both grew up on homemade sauce only.

Blashepmy !!! - but both sides of my family is Italian and it's just unheard of - you just don't DO that in my family Chat Icon

We're spoiled b/c we're used to it being homemade - and can tell the difference in 1/2 a bite.

We actually get the sauce to a boil and add a sprinkle of Baking soda. It sorta explodes and then once the bubbles are done...we let it simmer for about 20 more minutes. YUMMMY!!!

I tried to eat jar sauce but I don't like them. I used to hate the time of the summer we'd jar sauce b/c it meant school was around the corner Chat Icon

I agree with the nutmeg or you can even try adding a cinnamon stick while cooking. That's what us Greeks do Chat Icon

I grew up on homemade sauce, the kind that simmers for hours to the 'perfect' consistency so 99.9% of the time, I won't use a jarred sauce. For the rare occasion that I do, I use Emeril's Roasted Red Pepper sauce (tweaked, of course). Jarred sauce just doesn't taste homemade enough to me and it is usually too sweet for my taste.
