wow I didn't know either of them had autistic children. I knew Toni Braxton did from when she was on The View last year.

Aw, I'm going to miss this!
Yes, I knew about both of them. Jenny McCarthy is very much into austism awareness. Also, she started a group for "Indigo Moms."

I am watching it now
As sad as it is she is very motivating to me.....she seems to have made herself very educated about autism and how to help her son on a daily basis.
She seems like a different person from a few years ago.....she has totally changed with motherhood and seems great and so happy.

What do you think about her saying about MMR & her son changing..SO scary..I don't know what to do about the vaccines..and I am now debating whether to give DC Flu shot also..

Re: Jenny McCarthy & Holly Robinson Peete discuss their sons autism on Oprah today
So she believes that there is a link between the MMR and her son getting autism....another mom who believes this...another reason why I am holding off on giving my DD the MMR.
IMO there are too many moms who say the light went off after the MMR shot and I firmly believe that even if there is a 1/2 % chance that the two are related its too high.

Re: Jenny McCarthy & Holly Robinson Peete discuss their sons autism on Oprah today
shes is so cute! I give her a lot of props going on oprah and being so open about everything (including thinking it was the MMR that caused it), i work with children with autism and have heard so many parents feel the same as Jenny. DH and I have told my pediatrician as well our family for so long that we will be delaying and separating the MMR shot it was also interesting how the CDC told Oprah that while their didnt seem to be a correlation, that they were still "looking" into it, obviously they also have some concerns/doubts to continue investigating thermisol and autism

Re: Jenny McCarthy & Holly Robinson Peete discuss their sons autism on Oprah today
I like how she said one size does not fit all. All children are different and will react differently to shots, certains diets, etc. Holly Robinson Peete also suggested there could be a correlation between her sons autism and the fact that he was a preemie and maybe there was a problem with his immune system when he received the shots.

as a special ed teacher who worked w/ children w/ autism, i always said that it was not the vaccines. i thought that this was just the same time that the autistic tendencies started to appear and become more apparent to moms and dads.
now as a first time mom of a son, i'm scared of even the slightest possibility that it is the vaccine. i just don't know. i will push back the mmr shot but...

Re: Jenny McCarthy & Holly Robinson Peete discuss their sons autism on Oprah today
We asked for a single done vial of each vaccine since day one and we delayed & separated the MMR. if there is even a .00001% chance of the vaccines causing Autisum, that is too high for me JMHO.
As for doctors, the CDC and teachers not believing that the shots cause autism I feel that is ignorant. How do they know? All the tests were performed by drug companies (think they have reason to say the MMR is OK??? )
Seriously, it seems that when teachers or doctors have children of their own they change their mind about the MMR. My pediatrician told me that there is no link, yadda, yadda and then I asked her, "what would you do to YOUR child??" She said she would separate it, so that is what we did.

Re: Jenny McCarthy & Holly Robinson Peete discuss their sons autism on Oprah today
IF you decide to seperate the shot, how do you do it?
I was looking at DS's sheet and he is getting 3 rounds of shots. So, I'm confused.

It really does depend on your health care practicioner, and your child's individual care situation. Someone posted a couple of weeks ago that the CDC is soon going to recommend NOT splitting the shots at all, which will mean that insurance companies and doctors won't allow you to do it.
Also, if your child attends a public daycare, you really need to think carefully about delaying any vaccines. While I understand the concerns, no connection to autism and the MMR have been proven or disproven...it is still being studied and researched. Personally, I think if there were a direct link between the two, there would be TONS more children with autism. MPO is that the timing of when the MMR is typically given and autism signs tend to emerge is what causes some parents believe there is a correlation, coupled with their (very understandable)emotional need to "blame" something.
Perhaps the CDC should re-evaluated when the MMR is given...say, at 2 yrs. old instead of 12 months.

Re: Jenny McCarthy & Holly Robinson Peete discuss their sons autism on Oprah today
I looked at the jacket of Jenny's book and was like... uh oh...
I'm sorry - her son had a seizure when he was 2, and thats when problems began... now he is RECPOVERED from diet and vitamins???
These stories infuriate me, because it leads parents to do so many things when treatment is the most important thing....

Well, she did say that it took a lot of therapy and she still does the therapy with him. She did not say it was just diet. And, she said he is medically considered recovered, but that they still have things to work on.

I give both women credit for speaking publicly about the trials and tribulations of having a child with autism. I'm sure they've helped alot of other moms out there today.

On the jacket it says he completely recovered - thats all I read....
I have seen some kids considered recovered.... Its never really truly "recovered" - I have seen some wonderful success stories, but it takes constant work asnd its never a "finished" process....

I supprt any parent raising a child with autism and reaching out to the community. I just worry about the confusion that goes hand in hand with the information that they give....
