I wish I had this option when I was a kid and going to religion class every weekend! I would have definitely taken the jail time! Chat Icon

And I agree with this...

How about a community group, which CAN be a church - as ONE option. I think the community aspect is really the part I find CAN be the most beneficial. I am not even thinking about the faith/religious part. . . b/c let's be honest. . . the place where most people FIND GOD is jail Chat Icon

That is DISGUSTING! Chat Icon

Pathetic and immoral.

#1, Like GoldenRod said: "Your options are to go to jail and have a criminal record, or go to church and have no criminal record... yeah, real choice there....."

#2 church WON'T make a difference if they don't invest into it.

#3 Sounds like forced theology if they won't offer alternative religions.

#4 So folks like me who don't do church are what? either obviously criminal minds or just waiting to be saved? Yuck, ew and NOT right!

This idea is terrible!

This sounds as stupid as pray the gay away and the praying done at some AA meetings.

I'd rather do time than suffer through church.

Re: Jesus or jail? Alabama town offers options for serving time

I dont really think this is that terrible it's a choice they are giving people, meaning they are not being forced to do so. And yes the only choice that leaves you without a criminal record is choosing the church option, but seriously a person can go to a church and sit there an entire year and tune it all out and just go through the motions. They never said you had to convert or worship (unless I missed that point) you just had to be a body in the crowd.

Maybe the reaction would be better if the person could choose to go to church every week OR see a therapist weekly for a year.

You're absolutely right. They can just nap in the back of the church for an hour each Sunday. But how is that going to help them? Or punish them? Or whatever you think jail/fine is meant to do to a person who commits a crime. That's basically getting away with it IMO.

just like every prisoner on parole tells everyone they got jesus in them, get released and oddly enough are right back in jail. Doesn't work.

i don't see anything wrong with offereing this as an option. if you don't like it, then don't do it.
NY is a very liberal state and we forget how other states view things sometimes. this might not go over well at all here, but in Alabama it might.

How much does a year of church cost?

I would assume they'd be expected to make a contribution each week when the basket is passed around.

Re: Jesus or jail? Alabama town offers options for serving time

I live in a city that has been raked the most violent by the FBI for many years now, and I WISH they had this option for mis. crimes. I feel it would help steer people in a better way. I also live in a more religious community and they are actively trying to bring crime down. I think the point in this is it's another option. I honestly don't know how you could go to church EVERY SINGLE Sunday and NOT make relationships with people and have that NOT effect you in a good way. I mean no disrespect, but seriously I am so over the debates about everything. It's not right, it's not fair, it's not blah blah blah....DO NOT commit the crime. Why should we have to be fair? YOU commited a crime and are being given an option. I also want to point out that it sounds like this Alabama town is much like the town I live in....grounded in Christian faith. This is Alabama not NY, and I can promise you it's not the same...not even a little. While most of you are buying Fendi, and driving BMW's, theya re using the bridge caard and driving a rust bucket because that's what they can afford. It's not a slam to anybody, but just a reality check that not everybody has the saame things many of you do. I have said it before and i'll say it again....my 1st trip to the fashion board on here was a wake up call that I wasn't in Michigan anymore.

I don't think she was sarcastic or out of line in any way, shape or form. As an adult she was giving her own opinion and attempting to engage in an adult discussion. I'm genuinely confused about where you see her being rude, sarcastic or saying anything remotely out of line.

OP.. I don't know how I feel about this. The option isn't terrible but the idea that going to church would absolve the crime in it's entirety is what maybe pushes the envelope for me. I'm also wondering about whether it is actually constitutional. The constitution protects freedom of religion - this idea doesn't say you have to be Christian, you get to make a choice. You can choose to go to church and STILl not be Christian. I have chosen to attend services in a variety of religions that are not my own. I'll have to read more and give myself some time to come to an opinion.

That would depend on the church. Our church doesn't encourage people to donate unless they are members and to be a member theere are classes to attend and it sounds like they are not asking them to be members but just to attend and it also sounds liek they can go to many churches.

its not right that because someone went to church for a year their crimes are forgiven.. are there harsher penalties if they do it again? im all for rehabilitation but idk what it has to do with going to church...

are the criminals from this area in Alabama... wouldnt they already have ties to Christianity? how come that didnt stop them from being criminals in the first place?

I think the point is they are trying to get them involved in something "good". Like I said I find it hard to believe you would go to church everyday for a year and not change. I took it sorta as an outreach type program. Many have ties to the fairth, but a pull from others may have taken them away. Like I said maybe it's not for every community, but I know my community would HIGHLY benifit from trying this out! I think it's a really good idea.

The problem is that if you 'believe' you are given an easier out. Why should people that don't believe not have the same options?

We went my IL's church for a while. In just a few years, I could see the cattiness and in-fighting escalate. There was definitely a lot more bad coming out of that congregation than good. And this is from a small community church that has been around for 200 years. Putting people in a room once a week doesn't make them better or more "good".

What if the options were: Jail time, fine, or if you go to a Mosque for a year, you'll be absolved of the crime. Would people be OK with that? You don't have to convert, just sit in the Mosque once a week for a year. I have a strong feeling there would be a lot more outrage in the country about that "option".....

I think the counter argument could be that plenty of people serve time in jail and come out no better than they started. And maybe just having to sit in a church every week for a year is punishment enough. I dont know it's a tricky one I think there's room for argument on both sides of the coin.

I'm sure plenty of bad people grew up going to church/still attend.

Going to church doesn't make you a good person.

i don't understand why we don't have work camps anymore (or do we?) if you did a piddly crime then you have to work in a soup kitchen or assist those in your community. To me that is more useful then sitting in a church especially since not everyone thinks Jesus is our savior.
