Job Advice
Please don't quote.
I was offered a new position, fairly similar to my current one. Here are the pros and cons.
New job -$6k less per year (some is cash, most is taxed) -4 day workweek -Paid maternity -No benefits (I get through DH anyway) -Work from a home office, 40 min commute -Owner is very laid back and wants to be as flexible as possible for me
Old job -$6k more -No flexbility -Benefits (get through DH) -20/25 min commute -Absolutely unstable boss who treats me like a slave, expected to be on call 24/7, I'm doing the work of 4 people for the price of 1 and no matter what I do I am always in the wrong for something or being used as a pawn. My boss hasn't been able to keep an assistant for more than 1 year.
So obviously I can see this is skewed LOL
My DH's two valid concerns are the money and my lessened tax exposure if I am paid some money off the books. We have a 3yo DS and another on the way, so we need every penny. But I could trim the budget, or even try to make some additional income by having a shorter work week.
What do you guys think?

Haven't even spoken to them yet. I expect they will want to try to get me to stay but they have really treated me like shit this whole last year and it's not a healthy environment.

Re: Job Advice
$6k isn't going to make a big difference in your take home pay, and it isn't going to make a huge difference in your taxes over the long run.
Flexibility when you have young children is invaluable.
I've changed jobs enough over the years, but I've been with my current company for 10 years - the longest ever - because I LOVE my boss. We get along sooooo extremely well and I wouldn't trade that for almost anything. I could have changed jobs for a little bit more money and a shorter commute and I just couldn't do it because when the sh*t hits the fan, my boss goes to bat for me, and that's such a rare quality.
I think I'd switch if I were you.

Re: Job Advice
IMO it comes down to can you afford the cut in income. If you can then I would go with the new job. If you can't I would suck it up keep my current job and keep looking for a new one.

New job - shorter work week, better work environment and flexibility are worth the extra 15 minutes and commute and the $6k pay cut.

IMO, the tremendously lower pressure, stress, and aggravation is definitely worth a cut in pay.

Re: Job Advice
New job- not working in a toxic work environment and a 4 day work week is worth the pay cut, IMO.

Make the switch. The pay cut will be minimal in your check and I thought a lower tax rate equals more money in your pocket but that stuff confuses me so I have no idea.
More importantly, the flexibility, 4 day work week SOLD me!

This exactly! You are already going to be stressed with 2 kids and then to add the stress of an awful boss with no flexibility is not worth it. Take the new job.

ITA. No question I would take the new job. Wouldn't the increase in money be offset by the need for daycare on the 5th day?

Take the pay cut. Worth it to get away from a horrible boss.
1 day less of child care, I would imagine, would help financially too.

All of this and what Goldenrod said too! $6k less isn't too big a deal in the grand scheme of things. Especially when you have a more flexible schedule, shorter work week, and a boss who respects you. Your current boss sounds like an assh0le. The new job hands down. Worse comes to worse you can always cut back a little or take on extra hours on the day off if you REALLY needed to. With 2 kids, one being a newborn you NEED flexibility. Would your current boss be willing to move to a 4 day work week with flexibility to not lose you?
Good luck!

6k a year less will equate to about $350/mo less take home give or take after taxes. If you're living paycheck to paycheck right now that can be a lot of money-that's a car payment. However, will the cost of daycare for 1 less day/week offset that loss?
I wouldn't worry about the tax aspect, bc if anything it's more of a benefit to be paid in cash

Even though its $6k less in pay, you are working 20% less at the new position. Do you have the option of working 5 days at the new job either now or at some point in the future?

This is the number we came up with after we negotiated - we were farther apart before

Agree with this.
If you can trim $350/mo from your budget, it's a total no-brainer to me.
