Job advice ..( anyone go back to work after a yr off?)
Ok, heres the situation...My DH was used to doing a lot of O/T and it was just recently cut back and we werent doing all too well to begin with , and now this.
SO I Dont know what to do?
I am finding it nearly impossible to imagine going back to a f/t job after being home for almost 14 months with him ( and 5 months of disability before that)
Im actively looking for P/t nights but havent found much that fits our schedule ....
Any advice?
I dont know HOW I could put him in f/t day care at this point. I just am not thinking emotionally I could handle it.
Im so confused on what to do, but need to make some money ASAP!

What about babysitting for someone else's child during the day? You could make extra cash while still being home with Noah? Or what about working in a daycare where you can bring Noah?

I looked in working at a daycare, I looked everywhere and have found nothing available anywhere, and with no real experience.
Im not sure if I could watch someone elses kid, I could but we also have 3 cats and a dog and most people frown on that?

Hey, you never know. It wouldn't bother me that you have animals, but that's because I have them, too. There's plenty of people out there iwth animals. Where are you located? I know my sister will need someone to watch her DC come November (I know you need somethign NOW, but still!)

Re: Job advice ..( anyone go back to work after a yr off?)
sorry you have to even think about this.. i can somewhat relate. i am going back in sept. after 14 months or so too. i am very very sad about it. i am trying to prepare for it best i can. i work in a school so the only comfort is that i get out early and have days off a lot. what did you do before DS came along? is it something that you can take on p/t? i wish i had more advice for you. i guess if you took p/t work it would have to be at night or whenever your DH is home? it is hard to find p/t jobs that are worth the time but maybe some of the ladies on here have suggestions? or can your DH take on another job? i know that sounds nuts-my brother does that so his wife can SAH but it is VERY hard and he's out all weekend as a bouncer in a bar. not a great thing but it allows her to stay home. plus he doesn't wrk too late during the week. whatever happens-i hope it works out. my DH has been out of work for 6 months now so i can truly sympathize on some level!

Have you looked into becoming a pharmacy tech? Places like Walgreens will often train you with no experience and it offers evening hours which might work so DH can be home with Noah. I'm not sure what the pay is in NY though.

I went back after 2 1/2 years!!!!!
I went back 3 days a week and put Ava in daycare. It was the best thing I ever did. Good for her and for me...
Good Luck

That field pays nothing. Like $8-9 an hour at a drugstore, IF that. My sister went to school for it last year and could not find a decent paying job so it was pretty much a waste of her time and money for the schooling.

Just to give you a little laugh, Donna, I was flipping through the penny saver today and came upon an add for "dancers" and found myself thinking, "Hmmm, too bad I don't have the body for that!" I'd love some extra cash! I'll pick my brain a bit and come up with some ideas. There has to be something!

Donna,
What about Medical billing since your background is in insurance? You can do that from home many times!
Also, maybe Noah would do great in a daycare situation, you never know! My nephew had to go to daycare and after a while, he became such a different kid.
I really enjoy being at work. It gives me a break and them a break from me! Don't get me wrong, I wish I could have stayed home longer, but it couldn't be!
Good Luck!

Donna
That's not true of all places. Out here we start our technicians at about $11 an hour, pay for certification which adds another $1 hour and you can become senior tech within 6 months if you work hard and learn the ropes and you get another $1 so that's close to $13-14 an hour.
I can't imagine NY pays less than CO.

There are a lot of places that do data entry etc at night - maybe look into that?

Re: Job advice ..( anyone go back to work after a yr off?)
I had 13 months maternity leave and (unlike some other people) I was very excited about going back to work, it was really great for me. I enjoyed being a SAHM for the time that I was, but I also enjoyed the stimulation and social aspects of working. And I think that my son enjoyed the same things about going into daycare, he liked the activities and the social aspect that he gets from daycare. I feel like a more well balanced person for going out to work.
Daycare is a great thing for kids, they learn a lot, they enjoy it. Its harder for the parents than it is for many of the kids!
Good luck to you!

What about a bank? They have great benefits, training, and now a lot of them are open late and weekends (think Commerce) so maybe they have p/t hours that could work for you.
It may be good for both you AND Noah to have a little "away" time, some kids really flourish with that.

Re: Job advice ..( anyone go back to work after a yr off?)
Donna - I don't have any advice on where to work but I think daycare would be great for Noah now. He is so social and would really thrive. I know how hard it is - but if you do have to go to work know that you were able to take care of him for the first 13 months of his life which is something that so many moms wish they could do!
It's def. not an easy decision. I plan on putting Jack into a daycare a few days a week when he is 15 or 18 months so that I can get my back into real estate!

Re: Job advice ..( anyone go back to work after a yr off?)
Maybe you will be able to find something that's p/t days? Then Noah would start out p/t in day care and if the need/desire was there, you could transition to f/t for both of you. My SIL did this when she went back- started out p/t then to full- it was easier for her.
My DD started day care at 10 months- and she loves it. She gets lots of love and attention and it really eases my mind to know that she is well cared for and enjoying herself (I have a hell of a time picking her up at the end of the day- she never wants to come with me!). So Noah may end up loving it too- he's at an age where he might like the interaction.
Good luck!

DO you like sales at all. FOr extra money before I had Parker I worked in a Bridal Salon. Nights Part-time. It's hourly plus commission, which for a part time job is essential I think. If you are good at sales you'll do well.

Could you advertise that you could watch someone else's child /children in their home and bring Noah (if you think the pets are an issue)?

I saw few weeks ago that books and rattles Day care in Middle Village Queens is looking to hire(unless they already did). OR you could try and get a weekend babysitting job, if DH or another family member can watch your son.

Re: Job advice ..( anyone go back to work after a yr off?)
Financial obligations brought me back to work after being home with DD for 7 months and home for 1/2 of my pregnancy. I couldn't dream of anyone else looking after my little girl, having fun with her, teaching her things - all of what I should be doing. Especially now in such beautiful weather, I wish I were home with her.
But financial reasons were the biggest reason as there are things we are saving for. Daycare really has been wonderful for DD and it makes me so happy to see her smiling face when I walk in the door to get her. The interaction with the other kids alone is worth it to me. She is becoming a very independent little lady with all of the extras she works on at daycare.
Can you find something maybe 3 days a week vs. five?

I agree with you that I personally wouldnt want to put my dd in daycare with alot of animals BUT what would stop you from going to their home? I bet you could find something like that on craigslist and Noah would have a daily friend.
