Re: Job advice ..( anyone go back to work after a yr off?)
Donna, I truly feel your situation. I took off my initial FMLA (12 weeks) and then returned to work FT. After a few weeks, I found that I was so stressed, that I basically melted down. I was able to get PT hours at that job, for a six month trial period. I jumped at that opportunity. However, 6 months has just passed, and I went back FT. I ABSOLUTELY HATED IT! Unfortunately, the job did not see my position as part time(even though I was doing all of my work in half the time). I am now working part time(5 days, but only half days) for a local architect being his office manager. Is there something like that you can do? Really, the adult interaction is great for the 4 hours, and then I am so excited to see DS when I get home. We still have time to play, go the beach, playdates, etc, and I still get to make some $$. Check out your local papers, you never know if a local contractor may need a little office help. It will all work out!

Re: Job advice ..( anyone go back to work after a yr off?)
have you tried looking on craigslist?
Also would you be interested in working at a local college? There are sometimes more openings mid summer and they need to hire people before the FAll semester begins. Most colleges/universities offer part time positions too. CHeck out their websites they all have employment opportunities listed and majority have salary, hours, etc. already posted with it so you know right off the bat what you are comfortable applying for.
Also sometimes places dont always post positions up, maybe you can check out some local daycares and inquire if they are looking to hire.

What about doing admissions overnight at the hospital. My sisters ex does that. He works full time but I know they have alot of PT overnight shifts too.

What kind of skills do you have/what kind of work did you used to do?
Customer service for health care... I have had some p/t writing jobs in the past
Have you looked into becoming a pharmacy tech? Places like Walgreens will often train you with no experience and it offers evening hours which might work so DH can be home with Noah. I'm not sure what the pay is in NY though.
That field pays nothing. Like $8-9 an hour at a drugstore, IF that. My sister went to school for it last year and could not find a decent paying job so it was pretty much a waste of her time and money for the schooling.
Donna
That's not true of all places. Out here we start our technicians at about $11 an hour, pay for certification which adds another $1 hour and you can become senior tech within 6 months if you work hard and learn the ropes and you get another $1 so that's close to $13-14 an hour.
I can't imagine NY pays less than CO.
Yup it does. She interviewed at major drugstore chains and CVS was around $8 and I think Walgreens was $9. I heard Costco and Sam's and of course hospitals pay more.
Donna, I think you just need to bite the bullet and sign him up for daycare and work during the day. If OT picks up for DH, then you can always stay home again ya know?

Re: Job advice ..( anyone go back to work after a yr off?)
I know it is a different avenue, but have you considered going into the restaruant field - server, bartender, etc. ??? I went back to work F/T after 12 weeks in the pharmaceutical field but was experiemnting with other lines of work that would allow me to work p/t or from home (but nothing panned out for the $$ I was making F/T) and found that you can make a good amount of money in a short time. the hours aren't ideal but you could wait tables or bartend at a local restaurant to keep you close to home and make more per hour than most retail/office jobs.
I actually still work f/t but also bartend friday nights and make a few hundred dollars extra. It doesn't impeded my family time as I go in later in the evening but it is great money that is coming in very helpful with the economy and gas prices.
Hope this helps!!!

I just dont know if I can. Having him in daycare for 10 or so hours a day , I just am really not sure if I could bring myself to do it after spending all day everyday with him for a yr, Not to mention DH is DEAD against it. I could probably talk him into it, but he right now says absolutly not.

what about a position in a hospital? They have evening and overnight shifts & positions (unit secretaries, etc). Then you could avoid daycare- but you kind of switch off with DH.

So then you really have no choice but to struggle financially you know? I stayed home with Nicholas for a year and went back to work. It was hard to send him to daycare nine hours a day, but I HAD to work and make money or our family life wouldn't have been so happy struggling to pay the bills. You have to weigh the pros and cons. Pro, Noah socializing with other kids, you working and getting a "break" and most importantly, earning a pay check so you aren't stressed out over finances all the time.
Sometimes we have to do things we don't like in order to provide for our families (and I know you know this).

Re: Job advice ..( anyone go back to work after a yr off?)
I went back to work when Bryan was 18 months. We needed the money and we wre barely making ends meet with me being home. We also were in the process of buying a home. The way it played out for me was kinda weird - As I was starting to think of going back my old job called me out of the blue to come back and they were offering me double my old salary It was a no brainer for us I had to go back.
This meant that Bryan had to go to fulltime daycare. I couldnt imagine how I was going to do that. We were so attached he barely left my sight for 18 months and I was almost anti daycare when he was a baby. But I knew that I had to take the job, so I checked out a daycare and I wasnt at all what I had thought and I actually liked it. At 18 mo. He went to daycare and did fine. I worried about it so much, I couldnt sleep or eat the night before bringing him but we made it and it was ok.
Im not gonna lie there are many days I wish I could stay home with him but I know its not possible financially. And I know that daycare is good for Bryan he learns at ton and its good for social skills.
Its a tough decision though.

ITA with Summer.
The one thing is, obviously, you will have to be bringing in an amount that substantially covers daycare and leaves you with enough at the end of the month to make a difference.
Do you have any family that could watch Noah 1-2 days a week and then put him in daycare the other three days.

Re: Job advice ..( anyone go back to work after a yr off?)
I went back to work when DS#1 was 20 months and I was 4 months preggo! The position fell in my lap and it was great for my career, so I didn't want to pass it up.
I was nervous about DC, but I found a great center, but I had my parents watch him 3 days and he went to the center for 2 - then a month later, I moved it up to 3 days and then after 5 months - 5 days (but there was a summer break in that 5 months) It turned out to be the best thing for him. He was delayed talking and exploded there! They really were so kind and taught him so much - it was a great thing!

ITA with both of them!!
Actually, the main reason I am a SAHM is because I figured my paycheck would go straight to daycare with $300-$500 left a month. To me it didn't seem like enough and since I didn't get a paid maternity leave we used that as a trial period and we survived and I am not home 2 years.
I like the bank idea and it doesn't need to be a teller. You can work in the customer service area or private banking. Their is usually a lot of room to grow their.

Also, what about a receptionist in a private or Catholic school? Check out the websites for the Archdiocese in your area. Also, rectories look for people to work p/t as well! And sometimes off of the books!

Re: Job advice ..( anyone go back to work after a yr off?)
I agree with waiting tables. do it 3 nights a week, definitely an income boost.
Then you can still have time off when ever.
Something that always strikes me that would never happen in my family is when the child I watch is sick, the mom and dad alternate sick days to stay home with kid.
Leo would never in a million years consider taking a sick day. He said he would not be permitted to.
Which would mean my job would be the one where I am late or call in sick...waiting tables though, you would just find a cover.
Leo has tons of moms working for him a few days a week picking up shifts, making quick cash. Its the perfect job if you really don't need benefits. I would love to do 2 nights a week, but he will never work a set schedule to be home to watch Josh.
Maybe if you clean 2 houses a week or something like that??
We would never consider daycare, so I search all other avenues.
good luck, I hope it all works out
