Job interviews and myspace-fyi
I have heard from two different companies that interviewers are actually doing a search of the people that they interview to see what is on their myspace page to help in deciding if they want to hire them..just thought that was a tasty bit of info..be careful what you put on there if you myspace and you're looking for a job nowadays..lol

Yes, and schools are using it for admissions decisions as well.

Re: Job interviews and myspace-fyi
how would you even find their myspace page? If there is something questionable on the page why would they list it on a resume?

they don't list it. you can do a search for people and some people don't have their page private. i don't have a page either but i know a few friends who have them and if i saw their pages i would think twice about hiring them..lol i guess that's why we're friends.

I guess they could at some smaller schools, but I've worked in admissions at an ivy and a state school, and there is no way we'd have had the time to go googling or looking up every applicant on myspace... we're talking tens of thousands of applicants...most you didn't even have to read the essays if the scores and GPA were low. maybe that's for religious schools that care more about the moral/ethical backgrounds of the applicants and would care if they had pictures on there drinking or half naked or whatever.

They could find you by the first and last name or email address.
I am not worried since I am working now but when I signed up on myspace, I used a different last name and I have always used a different email address as my professional.

Re: Job interviews and myspace-fyi
Interesting, I never thought to do that. Although, I did have someone email me a link that took my to an employees page where she was dopey enough to be bragging about ditching work 2 hours early.

DH always does a search before he interviews people, interns or regular employees for his department. Interesting things can be found!

Re: Job interviews and myspace-fyi
I work in career counseling, and we advise students all the time to clean up their "cyber-image." All an emplioyer has to do is type your name into google and they can find tons of information about you if you are not careful.
Sometimes its not even stuff you posted on myspace, but if a friend has posted a picture of you on their site - maybe after a night of having a few too many, and they include your name, that could pop up as well.
We had a great speaker at a professional conference who talked about ways to clean up your image. The first tip was to google yourself and see what's out there about you. If your friend has something like that up, kindly ask them to remove it. Also, create "positive press" about yourself by authoring articles for a professional organization's online journal, or writing book reviews related to your field. Another option is to join a professional networking site, and posting a bio/profile on there.
From the conferences I've attended recently, employers seem to definitely be moving along in the trend toward checking out candidates' cyber-identity.

To let other people find you, you need to use your real name. You can search for anyone, yes, but that's also how you find old friends on there.

I think it's more at the graduate/doctoral level. When they are talking about fewer candidates and ones who are going to receive funding.

Re: Job interviews and myspace-fyi
I looked up my old babysitter's daughter on myspace- My babysitter was always telling me about her money problems, how she can't afford to send her 20 year old daughter to school.. yadda yadda yadda So, I look up the daughters myspace out of curiosity. On her page, she talked about her breast implants in every other sentence- with photos (nothing graphic) on top of it. I am 100% positive it was her daughter- I had seen her once before and I knew a few other things about her from our babysitter. Money problems, heh... no wonder....
