job situation with TTC/pregnancy in mind....

so after the miscarriage the main thing I can focus on right now is the job search. I had two interviews today, both are really promising and I think I might get offered both jobs (*fingers crossed!*)

Here's my pros/cons, which one would you take if you were to choose between the two? I should mention both of these would be a paycut from what I was making before, but I do want less stress than I had before if I'll be TTC again soon (after AF shows up again!!). both are in the city and in the same area, so commuting time would be the same (about an hour).

Job #1:
-very relaxed company
-the work is something I've done before and know that I can do the job with my eyes closed
-very much a 9-5 job, hardly any O/T required
-little opportunity for advancement (mainly b/c it's a youthful company and no one is leaving anytime soon)
-can definitely go to Part time when/if the time comes that I want to minimize my work hours when we have kids
-free baseball tickets to any game not sold out (its a sports company, and yes this is big perk in DH's eyes! lol)
-company has not laid anyone off in this bad economy but instead there are no bonuses/raises this year

Job #2:
-job is more challenging and would expose me to some aspects of accounting I've never handled before (good on the resume)
-hours may vary since it's more demanding and they were very blunt that there will be O/T especially for month end close
-there's room for advancement
-might be more demanding than I'd like right now
-the pay is around 10-15% more than job #1
-company has laid off employees in the past year, and could possibly do so again

**sorry this was so long, but I'm just looking for different perspectives, I'm at a crossroads where I think my happiness and quality of life as it relates to family will mean more to me than financial compensation....thanks for any input!

First Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon for you. I would go with #1. The economy is so bad now. I would stay with a young company who has not had any lay offs. I think that you are most safe here. #2 if they have lay offs again you would be first to go since you are newChat Icon and who knows then you may not be able to find another job. Re: job situation with TTC/pregnancy in mind....

Helen, I am/will be somewhat in your position as DH and I are moving to Florida. Luckily, my doc just put me on short term disability for my other conditions.

IMO-it seems that Job 1 is more of a fit for you. Just the laying off part of job 2 is a turn off for me. I am also in the position where I would want an opportunity to advance, but if they are laying off people now, and if the economy nosedives more, being that you would be new (and even though it is completely ILLEGAL to even ask a woman's status in the TTC area or fire them for it), companies are crafty and would find some other reason to get rid of a pregnant newbie (using you were last hired). It also sounds quite stressful and demanding, which may hinder, not help your TTC efforts.

Job 1 sounds like a family friendly company and very flexible,. The con is that there is not much opportunity for movement, but think of it the way I am-I would rather take something family friendly in Florida, and remember, with hard work and commitment, these small companies are usually (in my experience) very close knit and would probably give you a glowing review when you are done having children and want a position that is more demanding and career driven (I see this ALL the time in legal). So, IMO, if family and pregnancy are in your immediate plans, you want a friendly company that would cater to your changing needs without making you feel like A. a lackluster employee, because you have two major undertakings, 1, being your career, and 2, being a family. Company 1 sounds way more like a place I would want to be for the meantime.

Remember, we only have so many years to have and cherish a family, but a lifetime to make a fab career.

ITA! I like the option for part-time work and it seems like they would be less demanding and more accommodating for when you are pregnant and have children.

Helen.. i think job #1 is perfect for you.. ONLY if you can manage the pay cut from job #2 and overall ..

that would be my only question to you.. if its managable i would definitely take #1 because of the no-layoffs.

you guys are so right!!! I guess for me I've ALWAYS chosen the job with highest pay and that offers more of the "career".....I feel like I'm stupid if I take the lower paying job! But I do think job #1 is a company that has the employees in mind and won't just cut people to save their bottom line....and every year they close for Christmas week! that's definitely family oriented! thank you so much for your opinions! I'll definitely have to consider both once (if!) they're offered to me and I have firm dollar amounts from them.

thanks for your help!! if anyone else has opinions/thoughts, please share!

Do you know what the company's maternity leave policies are (not that that's a good question during an interview Chat Icon )? I'm would lean toward #1, but the leave policy might make a difference for me.

Only you know what is best for you, but from what you described #1 sounds like the best suit.

With #2, you wouldn't want to be looking for a job again in the near future.

Re: job situation with TTC/pregnancy in mind....

Honestly, the better opportunity is job 2. They also sound like a bigger company and may offer more or better benefits. Because they may be bigger they could possibly have the technology that would allow you to work remotely.

Job 1 sounds safe and boring. The only thing I can say about what you posted is that just because the firm is young doesn't mean people won't move. People don't stay in jobs forever these days. Usually after about 5 years people make changes especially if there is no growth opportunities.

I would definitely find out about the maternity leave. FMLA benefits only apply to certain sized firms.

If you are looking for a safe, boring job, not a career move, then pick 1. Pick 2 for your resume because once you decide to work full time again, the better resume could get you the job you really want. Who knows job 2 could end up treating you very well.

Good luck no matter what you decide.

Re: job situation with TTC/pregnancy in mind....

Hi..
It depends what you want to do. Do you want a career? or do you want to spend most of your time starting a family?
Sounds like job #1 would be more flexible if you get preg and less stressful. Also, as youthful companies grow, there may be more opportunities.

You can always go back to a more demanding career if you decide you can after a baby, etc.

ok to throw this out there, the first company is MLB and the second is the firm that just laid me off in December!! lol I would be working onsite at a different client than I did before (they're a property management firm)....but I have a slight distrust with them b/c they did lay me off after 3 years. MLB is a large company, the youthful reference is to the employees not really the company itself. As far as FMLA both companies would qualify, but as for maternity leave I *think* MLB's is better (since I already know the policy of the company I was laid off from and it stinks!). I should also mention that after I have kids I would prefer to work part time or may decide to not work at all if we can afford it......that's my hesitation with taking on a job that's more of a career b/c I feel like I would be more of a disappointment if they go through training me and they grow to rely on me, what if I leave after a year to a year and a half? But I will say Job #2 offers more possibilities with working remotely (they do occassionally work from home, but def. not on a regular basis if I wanted to consider that when I have kids).

If we weren't in TTC mode then #2 would be a no brainer for me, since I usually embrace challenges.....I guess I really have a lot to consider, whether or not both jobs are offered to me, this has definitely been an eye opener as to what I want most!

thank you so much for your input!! I like hearing the pro's of taking the more challenging job!

Re: job situation with TTC/pregnancy in mind....

Well first off congrats on hopefully the 2 job offers.
Second it is prob going to be a really hard decision bc it sounds like both jobs are really great.
But honestly i think the 1st job has the less stress and will require less of you which would be great if you get preggo. Also you are familiar with the work so that will look good on your part going in there and being able to work and not have to be trained on every little thing. And lastlly no lay offs with this economy is a great perk for a job. Well I hope my opinion helped but you know in the end you will make the right decision for you. Good luck with everything

Re: job situation with TTC/pregnancy in mind....

for me personally, i would go with job 1. during the TTC process you'll want as little stress as possible...even more so when you are pg again! but im the type of person who doesnt live to work. i work to pay my bills and thats it. i have no real desire to ever be the boss and move up the corporate ladder. DH is the bread winner and we're just fine on the salary i take home.
