Job Vent
so I have been working for a temp agency but my boss at the company I'm tempting at, told me they were interested in hiring me.
well I called him up and he told me the temp agency had told him that they needed to pay the agency 3000 to hire me.
is that even possible or is he bullsh*tting me?
I'm so pizzed.
I think I need to start looking for another job.

Re: Job Vent
I think that is common. The agency is acting in the capacity of a headhunter and that is how headhunters are paid, a % of the salary you get.

It's true - that happens. He went about it the right way, even though he could've helped himself and you out by hiring you "under" the table w/out having told the temp agency.
I would recm'd speaking to him about it.

Re: Job Vent
Temp agencies will often charge a fee of the hiring company. The temp agency I use to hire employees from charges us $5000 for every candidate we hire.
I wonder if your boss can hire you privately- without going through them?

Re: Job Vent
well he said that I could just quit the agency and he would see if they would hire me for three months.
I will stick with it until I take my trip.

VERY possible. The temp agency is actually who employes you and if the contractor who you are working for is interested, they can charge the contractor a "finders fee" or whatever you want to call it if you are hired. Usually you sign an agreement with the agency and this is in the fine print.

A commission fee is common, your company should know that ...

I know a few people that did this. They quit the temp job and then the employer hired them on w/o paying a fee to the agency. Wrong - yes, but then again I don't always think it is fair that the agencies make so much money off of the temporary employees.

Make sure you didn't sign anything that would prevent you from working with them right away. Once agency that I met with had a 6 month waiting period before you could work for one of the companies that they did business with.

Re: Job Vent
How long have you been temping with them? It's weird that your boss didn't know the agreement he signed to convert you perm.
For LI a lot of company's don't charge a conversion fee after you've been there for 3 or more months. I don't. It depends on the agency & the contract w/ the client. Typically the fee is 20% of your salary.
I'd have your boss talk them down. They may negotiate with him if they think you are going to leave.
If you leave they stop making $ on you. If they come down from there fee they will still make $.

I should have said 6 month waiting period after you stop working for the agency.
Good Luck finding something else. I'm sure it will work out!
