Off topic-Do you guys look at the labels on what you put in and on your own bodies?

Yes. I am pretty much a label-reader.

I have no idea about the sources listed above, but I use California Baby products for baby wash, bug repellent, sunscreen, etc.

I look at it - it didn't kill us as we were kids, how bad can it really be?

I agree

I agree

Thing is it didnt kill YOU,but it may have harmed you.....It has been linked to things like infertility in men and Women, early puberty, sinus issus etc.....and lots of other problems we ALL have in this country and are on the rise.

Cancer rates....They are scary...Where do you think that comes from? I dont think theres anything wrong with not being scared and if you choose to use it , using it...but I think the risks of unhealthy things in our kids lives are outstanding these days and I choose to try to ward off anything I can and have the power to do...

Somethings to blame....Its not a matter of killing but reducing possibilities of issues in our kids IMO .

MsMBV-this is not directed right at you, just everyone even though i quoted :)

My next OT question-so do you look for these kinds of ingredients in your own shampoos, soaps, beauty products and not use them as well?

Do you not= microwave rubbermaid containers? use nail polish? drink diet soda? use artificial sweetners? Eat trans fats? and the big one= SMOKE?

All/most of those above in some study or not, with the exception of smoking, have all been said have a probability to cause cancer in rats/mice.
Smoking is PROVEN to cause cancer and how many still smoke?

My point is there are toxins all around us. If we dont' eat the grass, plants, and berries in the wild and go aunatural we are all exposed somehow and causes some gene to mutate to cause cancer. it's madness when you think about it. Anything that is man made can cause cancer. it's awful, so i can't sit here and blame level 3 j&j soap for the cancer rates in the US.

Seriously.

If we all change everything we do because of health warnings that we hear, everyone should be growing their own vegetables and not buying ANYTHING from the supermarket!

I agree with the above posters.

Oh great. I just bought a huge carton of wipes from Costco. I'm thinking about returning them...

ETA: The way I look at it, yes we are surrounded by toxins, many that we can do nothing about. So we might as well try to reduce the amount of toxins we expose our children to (they are much more vulnerable) whenever we can.

So definately, no BPA, no parabens, and no phalates for my son whenever I can control the situation. Yes, I might have to go out of my way, but he's worth it.Chat Icon

As for the "it didn't kill us" argument -- look at the rates of cancer and infertility - they are soaring.

I dont think that we have to change everything, small steps matter IMO.

No one at leats nto me is saying that you shouldnt do what you want, Im saying whats right for ME and explaining my reasons why....But ultimately I respect anyones decision to do what they want.

Im not blaming J & J for cancer rates, but has it been a POSSIBLE risk factor in some illness'es.....yes...and my personal choice is not to risk it.

That said, I also buy and feed my son only organic food and for myself and DH almost all as well....I do read all labels and Im careful in my own stuff as well, although DS is my priority.

I do not Mircrowave any plastics as you mentioned, and I use BPA free clear plastics if I can.

I dont use artifical sweetneres etc..

So I try to practice what I preach as much as I can and I hope that health wise we benefit from it.

Do I try to educate , sure, but I wouldnt force my opinion on anyone.

I find myself on the defense about it as much as those against doing it must feel.

I think we should respect each other and both sides of it.

eta- We are the only country in the WORLD to ever have a lowering puberty age. Nowhere else does that happen or has ever happened. Something Americans do is causing this....ITs not a gene mutation....So until we find out 100% what or why its happening, I will try to so small things to change that risk for my children.

Donna-as you and i always find ourselves on these threads, you know we always do agree on one thing-Respectng both sides of the debate and just doing what's best for yourself and your familyChat Icon Chat Icon

Donna not directed to just you but I would never judge NOT ONE person here on their decisions regarding their own health and the decisions having to do with their precious little ones.
To each is own i always say.

But i do have to comment on the puberty age decreasingChat Icon That scares me, and what scares me more is that no one knows why or can pinpoint the cause. Maybe its the rising childhood obesity, and the diseases that are directly related to it, maybe it's the rising obesity rate of adults having kids, maybe it's the soap, hell it could be anything around us that's manmade.
The emissions from our cars could be causing more damage to us than just to the ozone layer.

it's a scary world we live in, and i know just for me, i can't worry about every little thing, i know for sure, i'd go absolutely insane.

But i would never judge or disrespect someone who doesn't feel the same way as me. I hope you don't think i am coming off that way. I'm just trying to understand the other side of the debate.

Re: johnsons shampoo not good!

I am totally the type of person that when I hear something is not good to use for my DS I switch products. Before my son was born I found out about the BPA I decided to buy Born Free bottles even though they are pretty expensive. Then I did some research about baby soaps so I bought something called Nature's Baby Organics head to toe wash. I had been switching off between this and John & Johnson for washing him. Once I found out Johnson & Johnson was such a huge concern I started just using the Nature's Baby Organics.

WELL I just went on that skin deep website and I found out that Nature's Baby Organics is rated #2. I am totally annoyed because I spent a lot of money on this product and I thought it would have been rated 0.

It really bothers me that all the organic and healthy products are so much more expensive. I mean I don't mind spending the money for my DS, but I just wish these companies would stop using all of these carcinogens. It mean I use soooo many baby wipes and if I switch from Huggies to seventh generation it will cost a lot more money. It is not as bad for the soap, lotions, and bottle because I do not go through them as quickly.

Sorry this is so long I just am so sick of these big companies using all of these bad ingredients and then the other organic or environmentally safe companies charging so much money.

Re: johnsons shampoo not good!

The problem is you really don't know what is in a lot of foods and products - even if you think you do - often a product you think is okay turns out not to be. So often people switch completely to a different product to find out later it wasn't so great.

I mean a lot of people let their kids take bubble baths and those are not good for you too. I think each person needs to do what is most comfortable for them and their family.

I think the best thing to do is alternate what you do use. I try to use a variety of products, and switch as much up as I can each day so I never take too much of anything for me or DD.

Also some people don't realize that there are different levels of Organic labeling too.

100 percent organic. Products that are completely organic or made of all organic ingredients.

Organic. Products that are at least 95 percent organic.

Made with organic ingredients. These are products that contain at least 70 percent organic ingredients. The organic seal can't be used on these packages.
