"Junioring" children's names?

What are people's thoughts on "Junioring"? - giving DC the same name as DH, DW, or grandparents?

I've known too many Jr.s who never have their real name, (Thomas Sr, Tom Jr, Tommy III) people in their 80s referred to as "Junior", kids who move out of the house, and have all the mail transferred to their house, since they put a mail forward without Jr. or Sr. A friend of mine is a junior, and he had such a hard time getting a loan, since his dad had horrible credit, and it was coming up when they ran his name.

While I don't like junioring, I wanted my son to have my name, so my first name is his middle name.

Re: "Junioring" children's names?

we did the exact same thing, DH's name is DS's middle name. We considered Jr., but DH wanted him to have his own identity. And it does get confusing I think when you have a Sr. and Jr. in the same house.

Re: "Junioring" children's names?

I'm personally not a fan, but understand why people do it.

My brother's first name is the same as my dad and my dad's dad. Different middle names for all of them. My dad was Mike, my brother was Michael, so there wasn't confusion over who was who in the house.

I'm named Catherine after both of my parent's sisters, and my mom's grandmother. We all go by Cathy. I hated it at holidays - still do. I felt like when someone said Cathy a bunch of us would answer, anytime someone told a story it was "My Cathy" , "Your Cathy" , "Big Cathy" or "Little Cathy" I wanted my own name.

DH said the same thing to me when I suggested a Jr.

My grandma, mom and sister all have the same name. I don't know if I would have a Jr. only because I don't think my DH wants it. I would not name my daughter after me.

But, my son is kind of named after me. I am Stephanie and he's StevenChat Icon

Re: "Junioring" children's names?

DH is a Jr and we ran into some issues with it because he neglects to use the JR in his name.

He refused to use it for our soon to be son which would have made him a 3rd.

I like the idea of a Jr.

Re: "Junioring" children's names?

We named DS the exact same same as DH but we did not put Junior. We did not want people calling him Jr. So even though he has the exact same name as DH there is no Jr on any of his things (SS card, birth certicate, etc.).

I'm not a fan of the exact same name too much confusion IMO. I would consider giving them the middle name after someone.

Re: "Junioring" children's names?

My son is John Joseph Jr, hubby wanted his son to be a jr.

It does get confusing when I'm calling John (the baby) and the other John keeps asking WHAT?

I kinda like the idea though.

My FIL is a Jr, its funny when I hear his 92 year old mother refer to her 63 yer old son as Jr.

I wanted my son to be named John after his dad. He has a diff. middle name, but I coudln't see anything other than "John" for him! I love that they share the same name.

I'm not a fan. Al's a Jr, so we'd have to have a III (which we're not). He found it frustrating/confusing at times growing up, and doesn't like being called "Jr". He's too much of an indivdual for the Jr title.

Personally, I don't like his name all that much (Alfred Helmut), so I wouldn't do that to my child.

Re: "Junioring" children's names?

Not a big fan of it. I wanted our child to have his/her own identity. I like the idea of using family names but we weren't crazy about Jr. DH's dad is a jr. and hated it and didn't do that with his kids and DH feels the same. Plus my DH is Scott which is just not really the kind of name you see Jr. with often. It seems like John, George, etc you see, but I've never seen a Scott, Jr. or Scott the 3rd. I do however plan to try to match his initials with one of our children since there are a lot of monogrammed items that were passed down to us that we'd like to pass down to a future generation.

Want to hear an obnoxious story?

On Thanksgiving day my favorite BILChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon asked what names we had picked out. We said undecided on girls, but if a boy it "will" be Peter--DH's name. No, "what do you think, BIL?"

He replies, "Dude, you're gonna name your son after yourself...that's so white trash!" He later tried to backtrack by saying "Junior" was white trash.

Excuse me???

Later in the PM...DH says to my dad, "Dad, X thinks it's 'white trash' to name your son after yourself, what do you think?"

To which my dad replies, "Well, if that's the rule, then my family is white trash as my father named his son (who passed away about 8-9 years ago) after himself."

BIL turns to my dad and says, "Well, I only met him once, but from what I saw, he was white trash."--My dad's deceased brother!!!

Ah, family fun at its finest!

Anyway, we are not going the "Junior" route whether or not we go with the name Peter, but I see nothing wrong with it and think it's kind of nice...and you know what my BIL thinks!

Actually, it's just the opposite of white trash. That's pretty much how all European royalty name their offspring. How is European royalty the equivalent of US white trash? Chat Icon Henry VII is one of the most famous British kings...

Re: "Junioring" children's names?

I suggested it to DH with DS and he was adamant that he have his own name.

My brother is a junior and we only recently started calling him by is first name (he's 25). Most people call my father by their middle name so there's never any confusion.

I am not a fan of it personally. My DH has the same first name as his father but not middle name, so he is technically not a junior. But everyone refers to them as Big and Little John, or Johnny for DH which he HATES.

Also, there are so many issues with DH's credit report. Things from my FIL are on his, and visa versa. Mail comes in DH's name to FIL and visa versa.

Sorry for crashing!!! This is a big issue for DH. We're still TTC, but he's already told me that he'd prefer if our son was the 4th. Chat Icon Chat Icon DH is the 3rd, and into genealogy big-time. He said if the name is going to end, it's not going to be with him. Chat Icon He tries to compromise by saying we'd call him by his middle name to avoid confusion. So I'm thinking why don't we just name him something totally different and call it a day?? Chat Icon

I put my foot down on it.
DH is also in the same profession as his dad and wants DS to be in the family business. I said okay, but can he have his own name at least?

Re: "Junioring" children's names?

I'm not a fan of it because it's confusing. Especially when it comes to credit reports. Through work I know so many people that have the same name as their father and things get put on the wrong report, etc.

Re: "Junioring" children's names?

sorry to crash..but my DH is a JR and we have constant problems...most recently a bunch of his dad's stuff had ended up on his credit report...two of the three credit bureau's be have him down as being born in 1947, with all of his fathers stuff...we are in the middle of getting is all fixed but its the biggest PITA.
We've also had creditors call the house for his father and DH tells them that is my father...you found my number you can find his!
So needless to say we are not junioring any of our children!
