Wow it's pretty close.
I am shocked. I thought that it would be 90% Obama based on the threads, responses, etc. I always felt that this site was UBER LIBERAL and that I was one of maybe 5 people who were conservative on this site.
I actually have felt this site is relatively conservative as compared to the general populace of the nYC metro area.
Really? How?
Have you looked at ALL the "abortion threads" on this site? 99.9% are pro-choice and a large majority are dems. so if you are a pro-life conservative you are clearly in the minority on here.
ETA: If you do look at all the abortion threads over the last few months look at which people were being "attacked" for their beliefs...the conservatives, not the liberals.

Frankly it really doesn't matter what happens in NY because NY will be voting Democrat.
That's why I will not be voting, because my vote will not make much of a difference.
If you take a look at this graphic, the people that live in the yellow states are the ones that are going to decide this election. If you happen to live in one of these states, you better get out and vote!

I think we need to separate pro-life and conservative.
But there has been a LOT of support for John mcCain and in years past a lot of support for Bush on this site. MUCH MUCH moreso than I see in my everyday life. There have been pretty healthy debates about healthcare, environmental issues, etc, with many people on both sides.
I think in terms of Pro-Life, there are probably a lof of conservatives who are Pro -Choice, and I also feel that Pro-Lifers are often hesitant to speak up, because it's a discussion that can get pretty nasty and Pro=Life people can feel outnumbered.
I think we need to separate Pro-Life and Conservative especially in this area for a number of reasons. One is I think this is an area where many people grew up with working moms, etc so the views about women in general may be different. it's also a very Catholic area. Catholics as a voting bloc tend to be social conservatives, but have liberal views on other issues.
As for the sense of it being relatively conservative, it's not scientific, it's just my perception.
Also, this is comparing it to what I experience as the general populace of NYC, which is a "liberal" area.

Re: Just an anonymous poll - if you had to vote today who would you vote for?
I just wanted to comment on the liberal/conservative posts on this thread...
I am pro-choice. I am NOT a liberal (as my conservative friends have pointed out to me repeatedly). One does not necessarily imply the other.
Those words liberal and conservative have become so bastardized that neither of them mean what they're supposed to mean anymore and it stresses me out. There are conservative democrats and liberal republicans (although they tend not to label themselves that nowadays for fear of being associated with the full liberal ideology).
I even know people who label themselves pro-life, conservative republicans who have had abortions, but that's a completely different topic.
And I would NEVER classify this site as uber-liberal by any stretch. I think the marjority of the posters are slightly more conservative than liberal, but there is a fair representation from each side. I think the 'liberals' may be a little more vocal than the others, that's all.

I will be voting for McCain. I'm kind of in the middle, but I lean more toward the conservative side.

These statements drive me nuts. If enough people who felt this way showed up and voted it probably would make a difference.
I mean you showed it yourself above. LI is traditionally known as a Republican area, but you linked to information that showed the majority of LI voted for Kerry in '04.

They can drive you nuts. But it's still the truth.
When it comes down to a republican candidate being so strong that he/she may take New York, then maybe i'll vote.
But riddle me this, if the Republican candidate has enough power that can win New York, most likely they are winning everything else and again the election really won't matter too much (see Reagan 2004). NYS is just one of those states that really doesn't have any effect in a presidential election.
I'll tell you one time where I will vote... if a Republican candidate happens to BE from New York. Then I would definitely vote.
Like if Guiliani managed to get the nomination, every vote in NY would be very important because IMO the race in NY would have been much closer (as compared to McCain who stands no chance of winning NY).
I'll just stick to voting in my locals where the popular vote matters (Senate, Governor, Congressmen, AG, etc.)

yep.... i also find that i am in the minority on this site!!! i sometimes feel like everyone thinks i am some psycho-uber conservative! i am actually quite liberal when it comes to certain things, but my pro-life views puts me on the conservative on some things.

ITA. I am "liberal" when it comes to social issues, thats for sure. And I also am a registered democrat and plan to once again, voe democrat in this election.
However, ofcourse there are some things that i would say im more conservative about. For instance, lower taxes, smaller govt-not "big govt" (in theory ofcourse, not all conservatives/republicans prescribe to this). More so, i am fiscally conservative.

Although I am having a very difficult time deciding , if I had to vote today I would vote for Obama.
I plan on watching the upcoming debates to really get a feel for the candidates

Re: Just an anonymous poll - if you had to vote today who would you vote for?
I'm quite shocked as well. I often feel like the minority on these boards, so its interesting to see this poll. I would say more conservatives dont really speak up on this board for fear of getting flamed (which is why those of us that are conservative seem to be so surprised at how many of us there are all of a sudden).
I'm conservative, however, I'm pro-choice (so, yes, there is such a thing)
i do have to say though -- although I'm definately voting McCain, this is by far the most interesting election since I can remember!

Seriously? It seems to me that both sides are capable of flaming the other, and do so in pretty much the same amount.

Re: Just an anonymous poll - if you had to vote today who would you vote for?
Well, quite honestly, I think that the polls are a better sign of where people stand because, with the exception of a few people, I think many of the people on the boards with a more conservative or pro-life view tend to get attacked more, so why would they want to post their opinions?
And to answer the question, I will not be voting for McCain, however, I don't know if I'll be voting for Obama. It's probably true that I could just refrain from voting because my vote might not count, but to ME it counts and even if I write in my own damn name, at least I'll feel I did my part by voting.
ETA: I think "attacked" was the wrong word. I just feel that those with more conservative views tend to be expected to explain those views or validate those views for others more, when those with less conservative views aren't expected to do the same.

The poll results represent NYS in general.
When was the last time New York voted a Republican into office?
LI is largely republican, no?
Not necessarially. Look at this chart.
2004 Popular Vote - By County
Ah well wikipedia isn't a totally credible source. I am just basing it on the fact that most reps on LI are republican.
Why isn't a chart from wikipedia a credible source? That sounds like a blanket statement to me.
Are you denying that the majority of Nassau & Suffolk voted for Kerry in 2004?
No, I am not saying anything about Kerry. I am just saying there are lots of Republican representatives on LI.
And yes at times, wikipedia isn't credible, so I wouldn't use it as a source for much b/c of those times when it isn't reliable. IMO.
