Re: Spinoff on being greener - who is NOT green? with poll if you want to stay anonymous!
I put "other". There's shades of green. I think I'm sort of a Hunter Green.
(I don't actually have a color chart comparing shades, but it sounded funny in my head, so I typed it... )
I recycle, replacing incandescent bulbs with CF, I carpooled until my partner moved to another town, etc. I do, however, have a V8 pickup truck (one reason I went with the V8 is that it gets better mileage than the V6 which I went into the dealership planning on buying), we have A/C, etc. We're far from perfect, but we're trying.

Sometimes...we recycle at our house...that's about as green as we will ever get likely. I am not going to candy coat anything here, just too expensive and time consuming. If they make it easier and less expensive to go green, then maybe.

Other...I only get paper bags from the store and I buy produce from the local farm. I do all of this in my SUV. I also am trying to use the earth friendly light bulbs.

Other: I try but not as hard as I see some others on here. I drive a compact, hope one day to have a hybrid suv, I have all energy efficient applicances, I'm transitioning over to energy efficient lightbulbs, I use microfiber towels instead of paper, I recycle. I use reusable bags when I shop.
I also use plastic water bottles (but I recycle!), I use pesticides on my lawn (when the stuff we have now runs out I will look into organic), I blast the air conditioner in the summer.

Re: Spinoff on being greener - who is NOT green? with poll if you want to stay anonymous!
I am going to say probably not.
I recylce. I try not to waste. I turn off lights. unplug cell phone chargers. wash all laundry in the cold cycle. air dry our clothes. don't dry clean much, have severely curtailed bottled water consumption, take mass transit most days of the week.
but I while I am trying to cut back, I don't think I am anywhere near green. I am a work in progress.

Re: Spinoff on being greener - who is NOT green? with poll if you want to stay anonymous!
I am as green as I can possibly be.
We have all energy star appliances We have changed almost all our bulbs to CF (except the dimmable ones, DH won't agree to it) We always turn the lights off when not in a room We use all environmentally friendly cleaning products We recycle We use reusable bags at the grocery store We keep the heat at 60-65 We don't use chemicals on our lawn We don't water frequently We use reusable containers for food/lunch I use a reusable water bottle for water.
I can't say we are completely green. If I had it my way, (and had the money), we'd be totally off the grid using solar power, drive a prius, grow our own vegetables.... But I honestly can say I am very aware of the environmental impact of everything I do and try to do whatever I can to do something.

Re: Spinoff on being greener - who is NOT green? with poll if you want to stay anonymous!
I am only green for selfish reasons. I drive a fuel efficient car, lower the heat, shut the lights, conserve water- but all because it's cheaper for me that way. (less money on gas, electric, oil, etc every month) If it's going to hit me in the pocketbook to be "greener" then I don't do it. I just can't afford it right now...

I am thinking about getting a hybrid SUV when the lease is up this year.

I am thinking about getting a hybrid SUV when the lease is up this year. VERY cool! When Dh gets his allowance for a car through his new job we are looking at the hybrid as well. If the company is paying for it, then I don't mind going more expensive, especially if I am going to be doing more local driving.

Re: Spinoff on being greener - who is NOT green? with poll if you want to stay anonymous!
I'm not absolutely green but probably greenER than many.
In my case it's a response not just to environmental concerns, but also as a reaction against the over-consumption lifestyle typical of a lot of people my age.
Anyway, I think "green" is a spectrum, not all-or-nothing.

I do recycle and have a very short commute. I only fill up my car about once a month. But I do use a ton of paper towels. I would say I try but not quite there yet.

Re: Spinoff on being greener - who is NOT green? with poll if you want to stay anonymous!
I am becoming green, but as others have said many of the "green" options are very expensive and out of my reach right now.
So I do what I can within my means:
We fix things instead of just buying a new one
We use energy star appliances we conserve electricity and water We use environmentally friendly cleaning products we recycle We keep the heat at 64 We don't use chemicals on our lawn
We use tupperware instead of baggies (but this is one of those ones, I question because of the elec. consumption to heat the water to wash them)
We compost all organic waste for our garden, use leaves as mulch and use horse manure from local stables for fertilizer and we collect rainwater to use for watering the garden
We are in the planning stages for adding solar panels to our roof

Re: Spinoff on being greener - who is NOT green? with poll if you want to stay anonymous!
After reading all the posts about going green lately I am trying harder. I was always somewhat green, I'm just trying to be more conscientious now. I unplugged some items that are not really in use, bought the reusable grocery bags, use less paper towels and more rags, use containers instead of foil, and wash everything in cold water.
I've always driven a fuel efficient car, hang laundry to dry, recycled cans/bottles/newspaper etc.

Re: Spinoff on being greener - who is NOT green? with poll if you want to stay anonymous!
Im other cause I use the reusable shopping bags, the incadecent light bulbs and I like to purchase energy efficient appliances, also I try to keep my heat on very low and turn out lights when I can but I do these things mainly due to convinience and trying to save myself some money. I dont recycle because i dont have a bin, the homeowners before me didnt have one and I havent had a chance to pick one up. I do care about the enviroment but I havent reallly had the urge to be proactive about it in many ways
eta: I also wash in cold water and try to do laudry on the same day to cut down on the dryer time.

Re: Spinoff on being greener - who is NOT green? with poll if you want to stay anonymous!
I do some things, but not others. I drive a MINI, I keep the heat low in the house and use our fireplace, turn out lights, re-use shopping bags, recycle cans, plastic etc... I do not use A/C, do not drink bottled water & have a new HE washer & will not use pesticides.
What I do that's NOT green: I use a TON of paper towels, often leave the water on brushing teeth, use a space heater at work (but in my defense, if I am wearing a turtleneck, pants, boots and long underwear and STILL cold, what else should I do??)
ETA- On the paper towels, I have multiple pets and use them for cleaning up 'messes' like vomit (my one cat has cancer and throws up a lot) & I make my own cat food using raw meat and I don't want to re-use them after cleaning up raw meat residue. A dishtowel IMO would never be clean enough to re-use after that & I wouldn't want to wash them with my other clothing, so I would have to run them alone which would be a waste.

Re: Spinoff on being greener - who is NOT green? with poll if you want to stay anonymous!
I say I will always be green & I know I'm not The most green person around, not even sure I can or want to be. I picked this answer though because as I live my life I try to naturally think of ways to be green. When i buy stuff I try to make green choices, several times a day I buy something that costs more because its green....so while I'm not "perfect" I still believe my efforts are a step in the right direction. I also think everyone that is trying & will continue to try after this being green goes "out of style" should say green for life. If however you are only interseted in it because its "in" to be green then it doesn't count

Re: Spinoff on being greener - who is NOT green? with poll if you want to stay anonymous!
I chose other. I recycle, we only fill up the car 1x a month because neither of us uses it to go to work, I use the energy efficient lightbulbs, I turn off lights when I'm not in a room. BUT, I use plastic bags at the grocery store (but recycle them as garbage bags or for cleaning out the litter box), I go through paper towels like a mad woman (although I'm trying to reuse them if I can) and it's more affordable for me to use non-green cleaning products. I'd like to be more environmentally friendly, but for me right now it's a matter of cost.

you can just use a big tupperware bin, it doesn't have to be the one given out by the town.

We don't have a bin. We just put out a large garbage can (sometimes two if we have enough stuff), and they pick it up. I know there are pails available from the town, but if I can use an existing pail I have, it's saving energy by not having to create an additional pail....

Those of you who are using a lot of paper towels - you are missing out! Microfiber Towels kick butt! They work so much better.

I am only green for selfish reasons.
me too.
it either saves me money, time or is convinient for me in some way. It doesn't guide my every decision, but i also try to not be excessive, either.
i drive a fuel efficient car and only have a 3 mile commute each way. we recycle we use the energy saver lightbulbs reuse my water bottle (i dont buy bottled water- i think its the biggest joke) i try to buy what i can from the local stores/markets -as long as its not depleting my bank account (i dont know that that's "green", but i like to support local commerce). turn off the lights when we're not in the room (and even sometimes when we are ) use natural cleaning products (more because i'm terrified of the chemicals and what they can do) i never remember to bring bags into the store with me, so i just put as much as possible into the ones that i have to use i donate whatever i can to whoever i can to avoid throwing it out oh, and i quit smoking. It had nothing to do with the environment, but i'm sure it helps it in some way, no?
So, i wouldn't really consider myself a "green" person, since much of it is purely for my own self interest, but i like to think that i'm not completely ignorant to it, either.
