Just an FYI for daycare center parents....Something I just learned

As some of you may know I am licensed for daycare, and as part of my licensing requirements I take classes.....

I just started an Infant/Toddler series and got an inside scoop on something (well not that its top secret information Chat Icon ) but interesting...

You may be seeing a change in the (hopefully )not so distant future regarding how children will be "moving up" in daycare rooms...

They have been conducting a study regarding continuity of care and the affects it has on children (being switched from one provider to another when rooms change at the infant/toddler ages) ...They are trying to come up with an effective way to keep children with the same provider (through most, if not all of their day)throughout these years because of how crucial they are finding it to be in their development ...

Obviously it is somewhat of a challenge given all the variables but it is being researched quite actively....

There was lots more, but thats the jist...Ok, PSA done Chat Icon

Oh, and something I did not know (but maybe should have Chat Icon ), children under age 1 should not be given any citrus products (allergy reasons) .....

This is a publication from the site for the The Infant and Toddler Resource Center if any one is interested Chat Icon

I have to agree (and I am one who hates change!)

I'm not sure how this will work with DS' daycare - he's kind of off cycle from the rest of the kids in his class - there are only 3 kids born close to him so he spends 3 months with older kids and 3 months with younger kids usually.

ETA - At his center, they move every 6 months.

I actually really like the idea and when I surveyed daycares in my area, I felt most comfortable with the one that employed that practice.

Re: Just an FYI for daycare center parents....Something I just learned

so daycare teachers are just going to continue to move up with their class? I don't see how that would work. When I was a daycare teacher I loved watching my class move up to the "big room" and welcoming the new group of 3 yr olds. I wouldn't have wanted to go to the 4 yr old room, just as a toddler teacher wouldn't want to follow her class to the 3 yr old room. Every teacher has their specialty and some work better with certain ages. So if I'm understanding this right, I don't think it's fair to the teachers. Plus, not to sound mean, but I've definitely had some difficult kids in my class that I was jumping for joy to say goodbye to when they moved up. lol. I would be very upset to have to follow certain kids.

Plus I wonder if that would make it even harder when they leave and go to kindergarten, whereas in elementary your teachers don't follow you. Change is just a part of life. At my school we had transitioning time, where the child would go into the older room a few weeks before they were scheduled to WITH their old teacher for just a half hour at a time. It helped ease the transition (plus we always allowed kids to go back & visit their old teachers in the beginning). I think this is more practical than having their teacher move up with them Chat Icon

Apparently, for some time now ( can't recall how long), they have been conducting a study following select groups of children from infancy onwards...

Just "how" they determined and "who" decides why children fare better with continuity of care I do not know, but according to the instructor, the evidence is supporting that children who remain with the same care provider in the early years benefit from it and that is why the "push" is happening....

ITA in respect that certain teachers have specific interest in certain age groups and wonder if the children will suffer in that regard...

As far as the children needing to be accustomed to change (I know that wasnt the term used by anyone specifically), children are "wired "differently in infancy and toddlers than grade schoolers and deal with stressers differently so although I can understand what you are saying (collective you) , I don't know that I necessarily agree 100% on that....
It's a slippery slope , not sure how they are planning on balancing it all Chat Icon

I can see the benefits, but I also think I wouldn't be happy if my son had to have one of his teacher throughout his whole daycare experience. I didn't care for her completely, not that she did anything that was wrong per se, but it was a personality thing. To think he could have been stuck with her month after month, year after year-I would have pulled him out. I like the idea of him getting to know new people. What I do like, is that he cycles up with at least some of the other children in his class, so that is a comfort to him.

My dd has had the same provider since she was an infant. She has an amazing bond with her and I know she will be sad when she moves on. That being said, she has gained a certain sense of security from having only one provider, one group of kids together growing. She is very confident and I know she feels very loved. She can count on her like she can count on me. I am fortunate.

I think when children are younger like 6 months to 2 years keeping the same provider makes sense. The provider knows and understand them like their parents and I think this would help with their development at such a young age. As the enter the preschool age then I could see changing teachers/providers.

I agree with this (even though the research that supports the idea is not based on opinion). There are some things young infants/children need that are different than what older children need/benefit from (say in elementary school).

exactly. i would have to change daycares if this was they case...then the so called benefits to my child would be lost. i would imagine that other parents would do the same. i do not think it's practical. they center i use is small and even though my children have one assigned teacher, they cover eachothers rooms. so he still interacts very closely with his previos teachers.

hummmm.... my DS (3 1/2) was told he'd be moving into the big boy classroom soon. THen he found out his teacher was from the 2 y/o room. He seemed to like her then, I really liked her. I think he felt like he was going backwards/into a "baby" room.
