I don't want to stir the pot (it's not my nature to do so), but being Jewish is a religion. There are different ethnicticies of Judisiam.
I so wanted to post this but was afraid of the drama it might cause! Thanks you! I never understand why people call "Jewish" an ethnicity or a race. Its not, its a religion.

True - Judaism is a religion. However, for many Jewish people it's also a "cultural thing," in the way people celebrate holidays, what they eat, sing, dance, etc.
I think that's why a lot of people identify with Judaism as part of their ethnicity or culture.

Right, I understand that, but as a Jewish person brought up in a rather religious home, I have never thought my judisiam to be a cultural thing. I assume that there are Jews that think this way, but I myself never did.
As far as ethnicticity - I come from Russian decent, DH is from German/Polish decent.

Can't really blame him, his fruitcake of a mother couldn't even remember what hospital DH was born in!

Well said, Michal. In addition, I wanted to add that Jewish people often consider ourselves as an ethnicity or race because we were exiled from so many places and not accepted or assimilated into the cultures where our forefathers lived. While my family can trace their roots back to Romania, Russia, Poland, etc., I have NO cultural affiliation with any of those countries. My only cultural and ethnic identity is that of a Jewish American.....and a human
Oh, and to answer the actual question, I'm not actually in a mixed race/ethnicity etc. relationship. DH and I are both Eastern European Ashkenzai Jewish mutts.

I feel the same way. Most of my family can trace their roots back to Russia (some were also born in Romania and Austria), but I don't really consider myself Russian. No one in my family speaks the language, cooks that type of food, etc. I consider myself a Jewish American, and don't really identify with the countries where my great-great grandparents were born.

Re: Just curious...Who here is in a "mixed ethnicities" relationship
Thanks for the understanding - agree with what both of you have said.
Jackie put it perfectly - Jewish people were unwelcomed and chased out of so many countries - that the one common culture they all shared was the followings and customs of Judaism - not that of a specific country. No one in my family identifies with the cultures/customs of being German, Russian, etc. In fact, when my grandpa escaped Nazi Germany and eventually got here, he Americanized his name because it was extremely German and didn't want to be known by it.
The only real cultural differences I see in my family are between those who follow Ashkenazi Jewish customs (Eastern Europe) and those who follow Sephardic customs (mid-East, mediterranean countries)

Re: Just curious...Who here is in a "mixed ethnicities" relationship
A lot of people who are jewish consider it to be the only "ethnicity" they identify with. There's likely to be a huge cultural difference between a Russian catholic and a Russian jewish family in terms of culture, etc. Also, there is a genetic difference. For example, when TTC, they don't test eastern europeans for tay sachs, they test Azhkenazi jews. So the gene pool is different. So you have different customs and cultures as well as different geneteic traits, so arguably, you can consider being ashkenazi or being sephardic, etc to be an ethnicity.
I don't really consider it a mixed race relationship, etc. But because he is Jewish and I'm not, I've found it to be a bigger "Culture shock" than when I was in a mixed race relationship. I've dated people from the same geographical locations as my FH's family is from, e.g, Polish, and the culture was so much more similar to mine when they were christian polish people, as opposed to my FH who is polish and jewish.
On the first day of class in one of my jewish studies courses in college (taught by a cons. rabbi), we made a list of all the things being Jeiwsh coule mean. A religion, a people, a culture...ethnicity was one of them.
Clealry it's not cut and dry, but people have gotten into insane arguments over this. If I was born into a Jewish family that is culturally and ethnically Jewish, and I convert, am I Jewish, having given up the religion,e tc. There are different, not entirely overlapping definitions for what "Jewish" means. I don't "get" all of them. But if you ask a 100 people, you'll get as many answers.

Re: Just curious...Who here is in a "mixed ethnicities" relationship
I honestly didn't mean to spark any "debate" I just wanted to merely state that some people I think forget get that being jewish is a religion and not just an ethnicticity.
I myself am Jewish and was raised in a fairly religious home, I had an extreamly orthodox wedding ceremony (although my reception wasn't!). There are definately different ethnicticities amoung the Jewish religion, but my background and DH's background we are from Eastern European decent.
