just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
DD went to her Sibling Class today, and we toured the maternity floor. Well... it is vastly different from the Labor-Delivery area - it was gross!!! Peeling very old paint, chipped floor tiles, garbage and clutter everywhere, broken handles and cabinet doors in the rooms - yuck yuck yuck! I was so skeeved, and kinda upset. I had no idea, and I am NOT being picky!!!!
Anyone else see/experience this there? I am so grossed about the baby and me staying there for two days. It was really unsettling.

wow.. i never been to winthrops maternity ward.. im might be going with this baby.. sounds horrible. My dd was born at NSP and it was nice. You think with babies they would at least have fresh paint on the walls.

My cousin gave birth there in April and I also thought the maternity ward was run down. Is there another hospital you can deliver at?

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
I delivered there...a yr ago already.
Things happened to so fast that I didnt get a chance to see materntiy ward....i delivered in 10 min of being there.
with that...i was in good hands and the room I was in was very clean and there was no probs. I was placed in a room that was also clean and was taken care of very well.
I have no complaints about winthrop.

I delivered at Winthrop (twice). The rooms were fine. Nothing special, but they were clean and functional.

Ditto. I did not have the same circumstance, but i had no complaints about the labor and delivery or the or. and my room was clean and was cleaned every day I was there.

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
I delivered at Winthrop 2 yrs ago. The maternity rooms are very plain and run-down. However, everything was kept neat and clean (which is more than I can say for other hospitals... DH had back surgery at Mt. Sinai last year and I could write a book of complaints just on the 2 nights he spent there), and the nursing staff was awesome (again, something I could never say about Mt. Sinai after poor DH's experiences). They also have a very good NICU, and you never know what could happen, so this is a very big plus to me.
I am choosing to deliver there again for my scheduled c with this pregnancy. Truth be told, for the 4 days I was there I was alternating between euphoria over my new baby, and total soreness from the operation... the decor of my room was like the last thing on my mind, lol..

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
The entire hospital is older...but it is a hospital. I am more concerned about the care I am getting from the doctors/nurses. My grandfather is there now and is not getting the best care. That concerns me more than the way the hospital looks!

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
yeh i can see how that would totally skeeve u out.. but u have to remember it's a hospital.. and after you give birth u'r no longer a special patient with a special package.. u'r just a patient.. lol. u get the same gross food, the same bathroom facilities... the same funky attitude nurse' attendants..
after that baby crowns, and they roll u out of the L/D suite.. we're not special anymore..
i spent a LOT of time at Winthrop when I lost my dad, and I hated it, the people who worked there and everything about it.. I swore I'd never go back there.. but my 1st daughter was born there 8yrs ago and her doc still delivers there so I have to.. Prayerfully, I can leave this time with more pleasant memories than the last time I left..

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
I delivered my DD there, and will deliver there again with this pregnancy...
Although the L&D rooms were really nice, the regular rooms were definitely older. I guess because I was only there for two days it didn't bother me that much. Boy I wish it was the other way around...I could care less about how nice the room is where I'm giving birth - the last thing I was thinking about was the decor.
I had to share a room and that part I hated, but I refuse to spend the extra money on a private room.
I will say I really like my nurses ( 4 years ago)...and I delivered on a holiday weekend (4th of July). There was only one "grumpy" nurse, but I really liked the rest.
Now using Winthrop for pediatrics is a whole other story - would never bring a child there again!

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
I delivered my DD there almost 11 months ago. The maternity ward is definitely not as nice as labor and delivery- but it was very clean- and I had a wonderful, wonderful experience there- and I would never want to deliver anywhere else!

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
The room that I was in when I was in labor was nice. I had my own bathroom, flat screen tv. It was a huge room.
Then I got wheeled out and went to have a c-section. My room was fine. I'm not staying at the Ritz Carlton...

I had both my kids their and I had no complaints. You really aren't going to be paying that much attention once you see your new . I also have never stayed in a hospital so that was my first.

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
Thanks for the reassurances - I am glad so many of you had good experiences! I am so nervous about delivery in general. I am by no means a princess, but it really, really was gross today. (I would equate it to what I've experienced visiting a NYC public school in a bad neighborhood in Brooklyn.) It was hard to imagine an excellent standard of care when everything was so dirty as well as broken-down looking.

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
My sister delivered there in Dec. and I'll deliver there in Oct. While the rooms were plain, they were clean and neat. Someone cleaned them every day and my sister was very pleased with the care there. So I have no problems delivering there.

sheesh, you'd think for what they charge for a maternity stay nowadays, they could afford to fix the peeling paint!

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
I did my OB rotations at Winthrop. I found the L&D wing to be very nice, it is newer though. The postpartum rooms were older looking but it was very clean and the nurses were very good.

The L&D rooms are very nice/spacious. The rooms in the maternity unit are regular hospital rooms. Nothing fancy but neat and clean. I had no complaints when I was there!

Really I havent been but I do know a mom who had an awful Nicu experience and ended up transferring her child out.
Gross rooms mean germs in my book.
