Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
I was originally signed up for Winthrop. Now I'm going to Northshore Plainview.
It's because I switched doctors, because my first doctor was NOT GOOD at all. So when I went to switch the old doctor called me to find out why I was switching and I just said my cousin swears by this other doctor, not to hurt his feelings. He said okay, but just so you know, your new doctor delivers at Northshore Plainview and going from Winthrop to Northshore Plainview is like going from USA to Mexico as far as health care. And he said if something goes wrong with my baby they'd have to ship the baby out to Winthrop and they would leave me at Northshore.
Scared the crap out of me. I called my new doctor and he said that he is actually affiliated with both, but prefers Northshore Plainview for several reasons. He said that he's done hundreds of deliveries at Northshore and can count the amount of times a baby needed to be transferred on one hand.
As for maternity wards, my cousin was at Northshore and my Aunt was at Winthrop (years and years ago, to be fair). Winthrop scares the crap out of me, but Northshore for some reason makes me feel more comfortable, it's just nicer there.
That's all I know.

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
I had DC at Winthrop and although the rooms were plain and dated they were constantly cleaning them and they were very well kept. The beds were even pretty comfortable and the chairs to sit in were as well. The nursing staff there is amazing. The L&D area and the c-section rooms were immaculate and brand-new. The nursery also is immaculate.
I have heard that they are eventually re-doing the maternity ward, but they need to find enough room to move it while it is being renovated.
IMO the care and the cleanliness is way more important than how well the rooms are decorated.

I gave birth there in April. The L&D rooms are great and newly renovated. The rooms on the maternity floor are in need of renovation and are quite small (the double rooms).
But, the rooms were clean and the staff (doctors, nurses, etc.) were AMAZING! I have not one complaint and I was there for 4 days (c-section).

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
I'm due in Feb and am delivering at Winthrop. I'm reading these posts and am a bit concerned with the cleanliness. There shouldn't be "off" days at a hospital. Hopefully the care outshines the rooms.
Guess we'll see. Maybe they'll be renovating soon?

Re: just got back from Winthrop - gross rooms?!?
I was there during a holiday weekend in 2006. (Labor Day.) The staff was great. While the rooms aren't luxurious, they are clean. You're only there for a few days, you're not moving in, so as long as the care is good and the place is clean, you should be fine.

I delivered at Winthrop (twice). The rooms were fine. Nothing special, but they were clean and functional.
same here. My first stay for a c/s was 4 days and no complaints (I had a private room!). My second stay was also fine, with no complaints. I want good care, and to get home as soon as I can.
