Congrats. Remember you can borrow ebooks from the county libraries so you might not need to purchase many (unless of course you want to...)

Thanks. That was one of my deciding factors when choosing between the nook and the kindle. I did some research online (and on here of course) first.

I actually am going to stop by my local library after work today to renew my card and hopefully figure it out from there. I'm in the city but I'm sure the process of borrowing the ebooks can't be much different than what I've read.

Most libraries use a service called 'Overdrive'.

Here is a video that explains how to move ADE protected books onto your Nook.

Great! I've had my nook for about 2 weeks now and I'm onto book number 6. 5 of those were library books so I've saved quite a bunch of money so far!

Re: Just got my Nook!

I rediscovered reading with my nook.

Except for 1 book that I wanted (and it was only $0.99), I have read 2 books from the library starting a 3rd.

I have to say, it really is the only way for me. No trip to library, no late fees, and no book to purchase. I am on the waiting list for several bestseller books. I can wait, meanwhile I have so many other great book to catch on.

you've all inspired me to get a nook. I get a raise / bonus in september so I'll buy one then! How does it work to take books out of the library website? Do you get to borrow it for a certain amount of time?

Agreed. Buying books is too expensive, and the hassle of going to the library, getting on the waiting list, picking up the book and then remembering to return them on time had just turned me off from reading.

Now it's just a few clicks, no $$$ or time necessary!

It's basically like online shopping - you have a wish list, and if the book is available you move from your wish list to your cart and checkout then you download the book. If it's not available, you can put it from your wish list to your requested/wait list and when it's available you get an email to say it's ready for you. If you don't pick it up in 3 days it goes off to the next person.

When you checkout the book, sometimes it will give you a dropdown of how many days you want it (7, 14 or 21). If you try to access the book after it's expired it wont open on the device.

But if you're done with your book before it expires, please use the 'return book' option to give the license back so someone else can read it sooner. Chat Icon

Books from overdrive? Hmm.. Are you sure you didn't have them out for 14 days? What does the status say when you look at them in ADE?

I don't know becuase I usually read them so quickly I end up returning them before they expire. Chat Icon Once I returned one in ADE and had it open on the nook at the same time - and got a popup on the Nook that the book was no longer available.

BTW 2 free ebooks today from B&N - looks like romance novels but I d/l them anyway as filler for when I'm waiting for something to come available at the library. Chat Icon

Re: Just got my Nook!

Yea I did it right, apparently unless I delete it off my nook in the adobe reader file it will stay on even though I returned the book. I kept 2 for 3 weeks Chat Icon

Congrats. I think once a week every B&N has a 'seminar Q&A' where they have an 'expert' answer questions and show how to use it. It's not that hard though, by the time Thursday comes around you probably won't have any more questions. We can always help. Chat Icon

I just set it up and am getting started...
I don't want to pay for books either so I downloaded Time Travellers Wife and I think it's 6 pgs.

Any suggestions for the best free reads from B&N?

I am going to set up the public library tomorrow night. This is really great!

Re: Just got my Nook!

B&N has a bunch of freebies - they have a whole free ebook section.

Don't forget you can also get free books from anyplace else besides Amazon. (So Borders, Kobo, Sony ereader store, etc)

And the second post on this thread gives a good list of a bunch of places.

Awesome.
Thanks so much! It's so easy to use and I read my first short story on the train.
So far so good.

Re: Just got my Nook!

Question: I downloaded ADE and started using Overdrive. All the books I'm interested in are out, so they will email me when the books are available.

This seems sort of frustrating...especially when there are 18 ppl in front of me for a book.

Is there a way to search to see ALL other libraries who have the same book or do you have to hunt it down? Just curious.
Or is Nassau Digital Wave searching all libraries like a search engine.

TIA!

I agree!!! I am so disappointed, nothing I want to read is available, and I can only have 5 books on my wait list... who knows when they will come in?

I thought it was me and I was doing something wrong.
I guess I'll have to look on BN.com for the freebies there...some of the titles are eh but I think if I look, I can find something.

The books I wanted to download aren't even NY Times Bestsellers.

Re: Just got my Nook!

I tried to post last night but the site was down.
I took the class at B&N last night
I left early b/c the older people were asking so many questions it was going to run into midnight. I found some of it useful esp. keeping it on Airplane mode if you have the WIFI version to save battery use.

Here is a problem I'm having. I watched the video link you posted which helped me, but I'm stuck.

I have ADE and was able to download a book from the library.
- I see the book.
- I dragged and dropped in the nook icon.
- Book is not on my nook when I look in my library.
- When I look at nook in My Computer it is showing the book is there.
- Shouldn't it be in my library?

Does that mean it's in the nook and I can't find it?
