Just upset: Sandy related

I have not been on in awhile, but am so angry right now. I am one of the only neighborhoods with power.I live in a good/decent neighborhood. Last night I heard noise and then it was gone. I heard this noise for a few seconds- I have very good hearing, my DH says I hear like an an animal. We thought nothing of it and went to bed. This morning my DH goes outside and sees our back gate is open. Someone was using my electrical outlets . What is scary is we have motion lights and it did not deter them. I called the police and asked them if they can step up patrols in the neighborhood- the nasty operator told me " Do you realize what is going on, we don't have time for this!" This is trespassing, ask to use my electric! Do it in daylight and ring the bell- I would say yes. I called the local prec. and they said I was treated wrong etc, but I am just beyond angry right now. SMH!Chat Icon A STRANGER IN THE DARK USING ELECTRIC IN THE BACKYARD IS JUST WRONG!!! Ring the bell and ASK me. We have had PLENTY of friends and Family here for hot meals, recharge things hot coffee or just to warm up. I AM NOT TRYING TO START CONTROVERSY HERE I AM FREAKED OUT STRANGERS SNUCK IN MY YARD IN THE DARK! I HAVE HAD PLENTY OF FAMILY HERE, FRIENDS HERE ETC. JUST RING THE BELL AND ASK !

It wouldn't bother me that they were using my electricity but I'd be concerned that someone was in my backyard, for sure.

If I came home & saw people plugged into my outdoor outlets (which is in the front of my house), I'd completely understand.

The idea that they did it when it was DARK out and snuck into the backyard- that annoys me, ring my bell and ASK. I have had plenty of family and friends here recharging batteries, hot meals, coffee etc. A STRANGER IN MY BACKYARD IN THE DARK IS JUST WRONG!!!!

I see what your saying about stealing but at the same time this person is probably on day 5 of no power.
I would try to be a little more understanding. Sorry I know it's not what you want to hear.

ETS: I understand being upset that someone was in your yard. But the post comes across as being more upset that someone is stealing your electric.

Re: People have sunk to a new low

I'd be really bothered by someone in my backyard, but I've basically spread the word amongst neighbors, fb friends, family, friends of friends etc that we have power and outdoor outlets and all are welcome to use them. I really think that you need to take a look at what you're saying here. You really want police to waste precious resources patrolling your neighborhood because someone used your outlets? That, I'm sorry, is ridiculous. I'm usually really good at seeing both sides of a situation but this is not something I can see the logic in. Like I said. Someone in your backyard is definitely scary, but how sad that someone was desperate enough to do that?

Like I just said RING the Bell and ASK me if it is okay. The thing is to sneak in the backyard in the dark is scary. I am more freaked out about it when a stranger does this. I have no problems with helping a person out- I have had a revolving /open door policy here for people- I have had people here non stop all week. A stranger in the backyard without permission is trespassing.

Can you follow the cord to see what house it leads to and talk to them? In a "im ok with you using my electric, just glad you weren't hurt doing it in the dark" kind of way? Or I see you plugged into my outlet, our door is open if there is anything else we can help you with.

Re: People have sunk to a new low

I understand you being freaked out by a stranger in your backyard. There's no questioning that. I'm also not going to sit here and lie and tell you I think the police should be wanting to patrol your area over it.
That being said, I'm not looking to argue with you over it. You must feel very violated. I don't doubt that. And I also don't think you need the frustration of even a stranger on the Internet questioning you.
I will say this, my parents have padlocks on their gates. Is that a possibility for you?

Maybe this is why I do not post too much on here- I was looking for support, not to be flamed! I am a very charitible person, people say I am too nice. I have been cooking for a houseful of people, people have been staying here, I even baked for them last night etc.

The police dont have time for this.

People have lost their homes, home with no electricity, no heat, no gas, running low on food, water.
People are looting homes. Cops need to focus on these situations.

Be thankful that is all it was. Pretty soon people will be stealing generators & stealing gas from your parked cars. If it doesnt get better soon, it's going to get really ugly out there.

People have sunk to a new low....Just upset: Sandy related

I would havebeen freaked, but if I found out they were only using my electricity I think I would understand. In times of need people do crazy things. If I lost my home and had no food, you might find me in one of the supermarkets trying to feed myself. You do anything to survive. Just sayin...

It would bug me a little that someone was on my yard. But I certainly wouldn't have called the police for something like that during a crisis situation...

I would be freaked out if someone was sneaking around in my backyard in the dark at night, I'm already anxious this week as it is.

I think it's the words in the title of your post "sunk to a new low", that makes the situation sound worse and why people are saying to chill. I wouldn't say the person is low, but I agree yes he/she could have knocked on your door and asked, that's what I would have done.

That's really scary. And actually pretty dumb of people bc you don't know who has a shotgun in their house these days... They def should've asked. I don't know of anyone who would say no, sorry you can't use my outlet. And even if someone did say no, you move onto the next house...

Very very dumb move on the part of whoever snuck in your backyard!!!

I will be the odd man out here and say this, times are tough and things suck out there BUT that doesn't give people a right to violate anyone's privacy. I haven't had power in days, my cell phones all died and I sat in my car trying to get a bit of a charge so I could stay in touch. I would never think to just waltz into someone's yard and help myself to their electricity.

In the grand scheme of things, I know using ones electrical outlet is not a big deal but honestly, people need to respect everyone's homes, space, and personal property regardless of how bad things are. We should all be using common courtesy and consideration towards our fellow neighbor, specially in tough times. Nobody is entitled to just start helping themselves to anything regardless of their own situation. Most people are willing to help, you just have to ask. To just take, that is not right.

So to the OP, yea.........I would be upset someone was in my yard too and not because they used my electrical power but because its creepy having someone sneak around your house. Chat Icon

I agree with this.
I would never do it.
I would ask.
That's all- ask.
If anyone asked me I would welcome them with open arms.
It's just a matter of respect.
That's all

Re: Just upset: Sandy related

To the OP-I don't blame you for being upset. It would freak me out that there were strangers in my backyard. That being said, what bothers me about this post is when you say that "you live in a good neighborhood" Are you more entitled to security or police presence than someone who doesn't live in a "good neighborhood"? It sounds like you were upset that the police didn't drop anything to patrol your neighborhood and make sure that people aren't using your outlets. Police are needed all over the island for so many things, in "good" areas and in "bad" areas and all the "in between" areas. I know they are trying their best, but they have to prioritze things, based on security needs. People are fist fighting at gas stations, looting, etc. They are going to prioritize based on level of danger, not level of neighborhood.
