Kate Gosselin on Divorce: 'Jon Left Me No Choice'
The wait is over – and so is the marriage.
With an hour-long special broadcast Monday night, Jon and Kate Gosselin, parents of eight young children and stars of the TLC reality show Jon & Kate Plus Eight, publicly announced that they will separate on the same day that Kate filed for divorce in a Pennsylvania court.
"Over the course of this weekend, Jon's activities have left me no choice but to file legal procedures in order to protect myself and our children," Kate said in a statement Monday night. "While there are reasons why it was appropriate and necessary for me to initiate this proceeding, I do not wish to discuss those reasons at this time, in the hope that all issues will be resolved amicably between Jon and myself. As always, my first priority remains our children."
Jon released a statement of his own, claiming his wife was the first to make a legal move. "This afternoon, Kate filed for divorce. Our kids are still my number one priority. I love them and want to make sure they stay happy, healthy and safe. My job is being the best, most supportive and loving father that I can be to my kids, and not being married to Kate doesn’t change that."
Difficult Transition "This will be a difficult transition for all of us," Jon's statement continued, "but Kate and I will work out a schedule that enables our kids to have plenty of quality time with both of us at home in Pennsylvania. In terms of my marriage, it’s no secret that the past six months or so have been very difficult for Kate and me. We are no different than other couples and parents who are facing a crossroads in their marriage. I am of course deeply saddened that we are divorcing."
For fans who followed the couple's travails on screen and off, it was a busy day. PEOPLE.com first reported Monday that the couple's marriage had officially entered the endgame, after papers were filed that afternoon to initiate a divorce. Then, on that evening's broadcast, the couple announced they would separate.
"Yes, Kate and I have decided to separate," Jon said at the end of an episode that initially focused on building toy houses for the their kids. "I'm not very fond of the idea, personally, but I know it's necessary," Kate added. "My goal is peace for the kids."
The couple said they would keep the Pennsylvania house they share with their kids and take turns living there, and take any other measures necessary to minimize the disruption in their children's lives.

Am I the only one that find this bizzare?
I guess with 8 kids, that's the best option.... ?

I think it's just easier for them to go back and forth than trying to pack up 8 kids every other weekend. Plus Jon would need a place big enough.

I found interesting that she doesnt wish to discuss it but yet she goes on national TV to announce it. Her first priority are the kids if that is the case why didn't she cancel the show. That would be have been the SMART thing to do. Instead this turned into a circus in which the kids can see when they get older and can see how mom and dad are acting. They are both at fault IMHO.

I wonder how long they were separated for? I don't know how far in advance they film these episodes, maybe 2 months based on the mother's day stuff in the same episode?

I didn't get to see the episode but of course I heard all about it. I'm surprised that they are announcing it this way. I'm still disgusted that they don't understand that it is important for the children for them to respect each other. Ideally they would have worked on their marriage long before. I have never heard eithe rmention that the marriage was important to them. I feel sorry for these children to be forced to live a circus.

I don't really watch the show, but have been sort of following this story. What does this mean? What would he have been doing over the weekend that she needs to "protect" the children from?

I'm only guessing of course, but could be a few things-- maybe he was trying to spend a lot of $$ on big purchases now that he's single (i.e. apartment hunting, new cars, etc) and she wants to protect HER assets and $ for the kids. Just my guess.

I actually do think it's the best option for the kids. no "living" with mommy one week, daddy the next.
I really like that the KIDS get custody of the house..they made the show.
I really CANNOT believe that kate would issue a statement to that effect. I really can't. the show was ENOUGH. filing the papers was ENOUGH.
I guess she wanted to get Jon vilified in the news as well, but really WHY leave this out there for the kids to discover.
it was abundantly clear that there is great animosity between them. it's hard to say if it would have happened if the show never was...
I think it's sad b/c I am sure they loved each other a lot once. and they are both to "blame" for the demise of the relationship.
Jon said last night he was not a good communicator. and he is obviously extremely resentful of Kate on many levels.
the differences in their personalities are vast, and while they may have served to bring them together (opposites attracting) the stressors of their new life with 8 children just brought all of those differences to a head....Kate NEEDS to be in total control or else she will lose it. it's how she handled the incredible changes having all of these kids brought. and that included to a certain extent, railroading Jon, who is equally at fault b/c he ALLOWED her to do it.
they would have been better served by a few knockdown drag out fights very early on...so they both could stake a claim in their new life....but Jon allowed Kate to, as he put it "rule the roost" and thereby emasculated HIMSELF. no job, being constantly brow beaten on national tv...even a passive person would not enjoy that for too long.
I think, especially Kate, became so caught up in trying to provide and organize her kids and her life that they forgot to live it...together, happily, as a family rather than as a "business". I am not saying it's her fault...I understand where her drive is coming from, at least that part of it.
but being that she enjoys control so much, she probably also enjoys the idea of being the "poster girl" for something..and being the mother, and now perhaps a new twist...the SINGLE mother of 8 children has allowed her to do that.
I really think resentment is the root of all relationships evils. it manifests itself in different ways...lashes out at different times, but it's the root cause of so many things.
to me, neither of them put their kids first. especially emotionally. sure, Kate may believe she is b/c SHE is the one that pushed to keep the show going (and keep their income coming in) but money is NOT everything. money can't sooth every pain...
I pray that these kids come out of this as "ok" as possible.
the end

I like that idea too. It has got to be weird for Jon & Kate though--would they both use the bedroom when it is their "turn" or will one use a guest room or something. Rumor has it Jon sleeps in a guest room when they are there at the same time anyway, so maybe he will just do that.
Of course, if either of them ever got remarried, it would get more complicated, but but it is probably best for now. I work with someone that had kids who were with their mother in another state. They stayed there, and he would come up (but stay in a motel with them) on weekends. They stayed with him for the part of the summer and had rooms at his house, but during the school year, they weren't shuffled around.

I so 10000% agree with this. I can be a pushy control-freak type but my DH, who is a poor-communicator and laid back type has ALWAYS put me in my place when necessary and as a result, I'm more mindful of my tone and my words and my all-around control-freak-ness.
Of course, I don't have 8 kids to add to the equatio,n but it's not like Kate all of a sudden woke up one day and decided to berate her husband - you know she did it before the cameras were ever turned on!
I feel for those kids. I truly wish that all the parties involved would go for counseling... not even to save this marriage because that's a done deal. It would be nice if Jon and Kate could learn from this and make positive changes in themselves and their lives so they can be better parents to their kids.
