Kids and soap operas...
My seven year old niece is visiting me today. She usually watches the days soaps with her Mother (in the evening) so now she is watching them here.
What does everyone think of this?
(Note: She just told me that something that just happened made her really sad.)
Um...HELLO!?!

Re: Kids and soap operas...
my stepdaughter & her mother used to watch "GH" together on soapnet @ 10 or 11 pm when she was around 8 or 9 ...it always ****** me off to no end. Soap operas are almost soft porn now & the examples of relationships are VERY BAD. For me kids should be about 12 or so before they can watch them.

Re: Kids and soap operas...
My mom and grandmother never really had an issue with it, but my dad pretty much forbid me from watching them when I was in school.
I don't really watch any more, and when I do have kids I really don't want them to be too into tv. And as much as I was annoyed at my dad when I was younger, I don't disagree with where he was coming from.

Re: Kids and soap operas...
I started watching General Hospital with my mom when I was about 11 years old. If there was anything that was too racey, she would make me leave. I still watch it wit her to this day, and i'm 28 now. It was like a bonding experience for us. She watched it when she was little with her grandmother.

My brother and I did too until my dad came home from work one night and my brother was all upset that Blackie (John Stamos's character) had died and my dad was all annoyed that my mom let him watch and get so into it.

Re: Kids and soap operas...
I started to figure that alot of girls might respond that they've been watching them for many years (with the help of granny or mom)...
But the fact that she said how sad it made her feel to watch it, is what bothered me.
(Note: She watches All My Children and there was some big --something??--that just happened. Alot of people were hurt and they were playing really haunting music. It was bothersome to me and I'm a big girl!)

Why is this girl NOT in bed? My son just turned 9 last week.. his bedtime is shower/bath at 8...all fresh & ready to be tucked in by 8:30 the latest. As for the question,if its not sports or action-y,my kid is not interested.

I guess in some weird way you can take the opportunity to teach the child a life's lesson. A lot happens on soaps that in no way parrallel real life. But sometimes they touch a subject, say an illness that can lead to discussions. I remember my mom talking to me about all sorts of things. Protective sex and aids, rape, a childs death. These are all things that I wouldn't have experienced in my own life for a conversation, but I was able to have them with her due to the show we watched.
Does this make sense? or am I just strange.

OMG I named one of my favorite stuffed animals Blackie, and the other Felicia! I totally remember when that happened!

I can see your point, but I am sure there are other ways to teach life lessons to a seven year old.
That said, we're watching Boy Meets World now and this show is no better.
I guess it's just me.

Re: Kids and soap operas...
My mom always watched them when we were kids and my sister and I got hooked by the time we were 10. I don't see anything wrong with it, IMHO. Sadly, I don't have time to watch them now unless I stay up past mindnight to catch up every day.

Re: Kids and soap operas...
I only watch my Soaps when the kids are napping or when they are in bed at night... I would NEVER let them watch it.. too much sex and violence.

I guess it's just me.
I grew up on Ryan's Hope, Edge of Night, All My Children and General Hospital. To be honest, I think that soap operas are so absolutely absurd that it's almost ok because kids wouldn't confuse it with reality (at least I didn't).
Now, Boy Meets World... another story. The fact that they had them get married right out of high school REALLY bothered me. That show is more of a "realistic" show to kids and to see marriage portrayed as a viable option at 17/18 is ridiculous to me.

I don't have a problem with it...I was watching Dallas, Dynasty and Falcon Crest from a young age with my mom. My nieces now watch DOOL and they enjoy it. I think there are worst things they could be watching.

Re: Kids and soap operas...
I watched when I was little, or really, I played in the LR, while my mom watched. So, I recognized the actors ( like Susan Lucci), but I didn't really follow the story lines until about 6th or 7th grade.
ETA-My mother was actually rather strict with TV otherwise.

I can't imagine a young boy being too interested in bonding with his dad (or mom) over soaps.
